Hello! And welcome to St. Maria Goretti Parish as we join together to celebrate the Thirtieth Sunday in Ordinary Time! Can it be that we are only about a month away from the beginning of Advent? Yes, time flies! It’s good to be together today around the Altar of the Lord, where we receive God’s strength and grace to persevere in love and faith! We are very happy to welcome all of our guests and visitors who join us for Masses this weekend. Getting together for Mass is a lot like a really great party. The more people there, the better the party is! I’m glad YOU are here with us today! This weekend, we welcome our good friends from St. Augustine’s Home in Indianapolis, the Little Sisters of the Poor! These amazing Sisters run one of the most beautiful places on Earth! And once a year, we are privileged to be invited to share in the Sister’s work by our prayers and generosity as the Little Sisters of the Poor come to St. Maria Goretti for their annual appeal. Please welcome them once again when you see the Sisters before and after Masses this weekend. And most importantly, keep the Sisters in your prayers, so that they may continue to do the good work that God has begun in them, and that they will have many women’s religious vocations coming to them so there will be plenty of laborers to do the work in the future! Last weekend, we announced at Masses and put in the bulletin for the first time about our new International Mission Trip ministry, which is just getting started. We are all very excited about this unique opportunity for our Parish Family. This effort is being headed up by Jim Mramor and Luke Klink, who also happen to be, respectively, the current vice president and president of our Parish Council. There is the first informational meeting on this new ministry and our first planned mission trip to Guatemala tentatively slated for next summer, this Tuesday, October 30, at 7 pm, in the Parish Office Narthex. St. Maria Goretti Parish has always made outreach to the poor in our own area, in our own country, in our own state, and in other parts of our own country a priority from the very beginning. We have always done what we can to help as many people as possible whether that be in other areas of our country after a hurricane or tornado or helping with various projects and groups in Appalachia. There is need everywhere! So why now get involved internationally? Well, we are an international Church. The Catholic Church is doing some amazing things in many places. Not only can we help out, but we can also be part of actually doing work and ministry to improve the lives of our brothers and sisters in many places around the world. The poverty and needs of many of our brothers and sisters outside of the United States is very different from those who live in poverty within the United States. And you don’t have to go very far to see and experience this. And seeing and experiencing this can be life changing, especially if you’ve never been outside of our First World country. We are going to try to continue to help out as many as possible everywhere. We are going to smart, careful, and responsible as we take this next step in our ministry and outreach. If you are feeling called to be involved in our first international mission trip, please come and join us this Tuesday evening. We need lots of people, ideas, various talents, and anybody and everybody who has had experience with international missions. Let all of us keep this new ministry and this effort in our prayers! This coming Thursday, November 1, is the Feast of All Saints and is a Holy Day of Obligation. Masses for the Holy Day are Wednesday evening at 5:30 pm, Thursday morning at 8 am, and Thursday evening at 5:30 pm. Do not forget! We need to go to Mass for the Holy Day. Friday, November 2, is the Feast of All Souls. It is NOT a Holy Day of Obligation, but it is the day that we pray for all of our beloved dead, most especially all those who have died in the past year. Masses for All Souls Day are at 7 am in the Daily Mass Chapel and 8 am with our school community in the main sanctuary. A BIG thank you to our Holy Name Society and all the guys who made Trunk ’r Treat happen for our kids this past Friday night. Thanks, guys! The Holy Name Society is awesome, and they do so much good for our entire Parish Family. Congratulations on another job well done! Have a great week! God bless you! In Christ, Fr. Kevin The only thing wrong with doing nothing is that you never know when you’re finished. Welcome! For more than 22 years now, we have been building the Kingdom of God, not with a few people, but with everyone! Please accept my warmest welcome, and I pray you will come to know St. Maria Goretti as we all do—our Spiritual Home and Loving Community. We are glad you are here and look forward to meeting you! God Bless you. —Father Kevin WELCOME: Robert & Cheryl White, Thomas & Kathy Pfister, David & Lori Ceryak, Brian & Jacquelyn Lajiness October 28, 2018 Thirtieth Sunday in Ordinary Time St. Maria Goretti Catholic Church · Westfield, IN | 3 PARISH ANNOUNCEMENTS PARISH ANNOUNCEMENTS RCIA The RCIA topic for Monday, October 29 is “Ecclesiology” with Father Kevin. • The Holy See
The Holy See ADDRESS OF JOHN PAUL II TO THE PILGRIMS WHO HAD COME FOR THE BEATIFICATION OF SIX SERVANTS OF GOD Monday, 15 April 2002 Dear Brothers and Sisters, 1. On the day after the proclamation of the six new Blesseds, I am happy to meet again with all of you who have come to Rome to participate in this solemn ecclesial celebration. In this festive climate, in accord with the joyful spirit of Easter, once more we wish to linger in contemplation of the wonderful works that the Lord accomplished in the life and activity of the new Blesseds: Gaetano Errico, Lodovico Pavoni, Luigi Variara, María Romero, Artemide Zatti, and María del Tránsito Cabanillas de Jesús Sacramentado. We want to gain a deeper appreciation of their spirituality and their example to follow them on their generous path to holiness. 2. I address you, Missionaries of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary, and to those who share with you the joy for the beatification of Gaetano Errico, apostle of the merciful love of God and martyr of the confessional. How great a need is there in our time for those who will proclaim God's gentleness and forgiveness toward sinners, particularly through the Sacrament of Penance. In the secret of the confessional a great mystery is entrusted to priests as I wished to confirm in the Letter to Priests for Holy Thursday. I wrote then: "The Good Shepherd, through the presence and voice of the priest, approaches each man and woman, entering into a personal dialogue which involves listening, counsel, comfort and forgiveness" (n.

The Holy See BENEDICT XVI ANGELUS St Peter's Square Sunday, 12 October 2008 As we prepare to conclude this Celebration with the recitation of the Angelus, I would like to address my greeting to the pilgrims who have come in large numbers from various countries to pay homage to the new Saints. I cordially greet the English-speaking pilgrims, in particular the Official Delegation from India, and all those who have come to celebrate the canonization of St Alphonsa of the Immaculate Conception. Her heroic virtues of patience, fortitude and perseverance in the midst of deep suffering remind us that God always provides the strength we need to overcome every trial. As the Christian faithful of India give thanks to God for their first native daughter to be presented for public veneration, I wish to assure them of my prayers during this difficult time. Commending to the providential care of Almighty God those who strive for peace and reconciliation, I urge the perpetrators of violence to renounce these acts and join with their brothers and sisters to work together in building a civilization of love. God bless you all! I joyfully welcome all the German-speaking faithful. I greet in particular the delegation and numerous pilgrims from Switzerland, as well as the Franciscan Sisters of Maria Hilf. St Maria Bernarda entrusted her life to God without reserve. Thus she became an instrument of the love of God which she proclaimed to the ends of the earth. By following her example, let us too strive to bring the God of love and hope to men and women.

  • The Martyrology of the Monastery of the Ascension
The Martyrology of the Monastery of the Ascension Introduction History of Martyrologies The Martyrology is an official liturgical book of the Catholic Church. The official Latin version of the Martyrology contains a short liturgical service the daily reading of the Martyrology’s list of saints for each day. The oldest surviving martyologies are the lists of martyrs and bishops from the fourth-century Roman Church. The martyrology wrongly attributed to St. Jerome was written in Ital in the second half of the fifth century, but all the surviving versions of it come from Gaul. It is a simple martyrology, which lists the name of the saint and the date and place of death of the saint. Historical martyrologies give a brief history of the saints. In the eighth and ninth centuries, St. Bede, Rhabanus Maurus, and Usuard all wrote historical martyrologies. The Roman Martyrology, based primarily on Usuard’s, was first published in 1583, and the edition of 1584 was made normative in the Roman rite by Gregory XIII. The post-Vatican II revision appeared first in 2001. A revision that corrected typographical errors and added 117 people canonized by Pope John Paul II between 2001 and 2004, appeared in 2005.1 The Purpose and Principles of This Martyology The primary purpose of this martyrology is to provide an historically accurate text for liturgical use at the monastery, where each day after noon prayer it is customary to read the martyrology for the following day. Some things in this martyrology are specific to the Monastery of the Ascension: namesdays of the members of the community, anniversaries of members of the community who have died, a few references to specific events or saints of local interest.
