The trip to the babies’ ward of Rome’s San Giovanni Hospital and then to a hospice Sept. 16 were part of a series of Mercy Friday activities Pope Francis has been doing once a month during the Year of Mercy. By visiting the ailing newborns and the dying on the same day, the Vatican said, Pope Francis “wanted to give a strong sign of the importance of life from its first moment to its natural end.” “Welcoming life and guaranteeing its dignity at every moment of its de- velopment is a teaching Pope Francis has underlined many times,” the state- ment said. With the September visits he wanted to put “a concrete and tangible seal” on his teaching that living a life of mercy means giving special attention to those in the most precarious situations. During the Mercy Friday visits, Pope Francis has spent time with migrants, the aged, at a recovery community for former drug addicts and at a shelter for women rescued from human trafficking and prostitution. • St. Gerard Majella Feast: October 16
St. Gerard Majella Feast: October 16 Facts Feast Day: October 16 Patron: of expectant mothers Death: 1755 Beatified: January 29, 1893, by Pope Leo XIII Canonized: December 11, 1904, by Pope Saint Pius X St. Gerard Majella is the patron of expectant mothers. He was born in 1726 in Muro, Italy to a family of seven. Majella grew up in a poverty with a great respect for the poor. As he was just 12 when his father passed away, he was forced to grow up fast. Shortly after his father's death, his mother sent him away to live with his uncle and learn to become a tailor, like his father. After a few years of working as a sewing apprentice, Majella took on a job with the local Bishop of Lacedonia as a servant. Once Majella began earning money as a journeyman at the age of 21, he split his earnings with his mother, the poor of Muro and the rest in offerings for the poor souls. As the days passed, Majella began to grow pale and thin, often fasting and in prayer at a nearby Cathedral. He applied to the Capuchin monastery at Muro twice, but was turned down both times. Majella was told his health was not well enough for such a strenuous life. However, Majella did not give up. In 1749, at the age of 23, he joined the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer and just three years later became a professed lay brother. Majella lived with the three vows of Poverty, Chasity and Obedience.

SACRAMENTARY AND LECTIONARY SUPPLEMENTTHE CONGREGATION OF THE MOST HOLY REDEEMER: SAINT GERARD MAJELLA Memorial OCTOBER 16 SAINT GERARD MAJELLA, Religious GERARD MAJELLA WAS BORN IN MURO LUCANO (Potenza) in southern Italy on April 6, 1726, in a family of humble circumstances. From his parents, Gerard learned the love of prayer and sacrifice. When his father died, Gerard, being the only boy, had to provide for his family by working as a tailor. At the age of fourteen he sought to enter the Capuchin friary but was rejected because of his delicate health. After a short time as the domestic servant of the bishop of Lacedonia, he returned to tailoring, but with minimal income. In April of 1749, with utter tenacity, he succeeded in getting himself accepted by the Redemptorists who had preached a popular mission in Muro. After a trial period and a year of novitiate in the house at Deliceto, he made his religious profession on July 16, 1752. He was very observant of the rule while at the same time going about the surrounding countryside to collect money for the material needs of the community. His presence to 1 /11 SACRAMENTARY AND LECTIONARY SUPPLEMENTTHE CONGREGATION OF THE MOST HOLY REDEEMER: SAINT GERARD MAJELLA people, who were weighed down by poverty and illiteracy and at the mercy of epidemics and crop failures, was seen as a sign of hope. Gerard had a deep empathy for them and gave to all a testimony to trust in the love and compassion of God. During his five years as a lay brother in the Congregation, he was remarkable for his apostolic zeal, patience in sickness, love for the poor, deep humility in the face of false accusation, heroic obedience, spirit of penance and constancy in prayer.

“Peace be with you.” Congregation of the Sisters of St. John the Baptist AnA Joyful Easter Narrative Insight into of the the Current current Journey journey of the Philippine Vice– Province Yapak ANYapak OFFICIAL NEWSLETTER OF THE PHILIPPINE VICE-PROVINCE On this Solemnity of the Nativity of St. John the Baptist, we joyfully proclaim and give witness to the same Good News in the many events of the journey in the life of the Philippine Vice-Province. These familiar words spoken first by St. John the Baptist are beautiful words that can be prayer- fully meditated upon and lived throughout our lives. When John had first spoken these words, the “Lamb of God” was seen in a very ordinary way. The eyes of all present saw only an ordinary man approaching the scene. However, the eyes of faith saw something more. John saw the ONE who would give His life for the salvation of the world as the Sacrificial Lamb, and seeing Him, he pro- claims in affirmation, by giving witness to the One whose fullness everyone has received grace upon grace, “Behold the Lamb of God!” In Jesus, John found the meaning of his own vocation, to testify to the light, so that all might believe through him. In our daily liturgical celebrations, the same words are uttered each time the Sacred Host is held up for all to see. We see Jesus, the Sacrificial Lamb, in an even more veiled way. We see with our eyes, a piece of bread. But with the eyes of faith, we behold our Savior, seeing His glory, the glory as of the Father’s only Son, full of grace and truth.

The Armor of Faith Topic Summary: Saints of Inspiration Part IV: Saint of Mothers Saint Gerard Majella Public Domain Introduction [Greeting:] → Welcome to “The Armor of Faith,” a show where we hope to bring our listeners closer to the Word of God and the blessings we receive through living in the fullness of the Catholic faith. My name is Doug and I will be your host as we discuss the blessings of the Church Christ built upon Peter. I am joined today by my panel: [names] Helen is a lay-Dominican with a love for music ministry. The Dominicans, I always mention, are also known as the Order of Preachers. Sharon, in addition to being my lovely wife as well as a wonderful blessing, is a youth and adult formation catechist. We are also blessed to have on our panel, Donna Mae, who is the artist who sculpted the statue of Our Lady of America which was carried by our youth and blessed by Saint John Paul II at the 1993 Word Youth Day. Of course, as everyone knows by now, I am simply here to ask questions because that is one way of learning from the people who have answers? The hard part we leave to our panelists, which is to answer my questions, correct my pronunciation, and make sure I know which century I am talking about, so welcome to our panelists as well as to our listeners. Let us open with a prayer: In the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. Heavenly Father, we lift up our hearts in thanks and praise for this opportunity to open and share your Holy Word this day.
