Today, Sunday October 16, in Rome, the Founder of our Religious Community has been raised to the rank of SAINT for the good of the Church by Pope Francis. Many of our Sisters (happily including me!) will be there for the celebration and will remember you in thought and prayer. I did want you to know a little about this special, holy man so that you too might join me in spirit and joy. Peace and blessings - Sr. Elsa Jeronimo C.S.JB. On March 23, 1839 Alfonso Maria was born in Angri, Italy to a fervent, Catholic couple, Aniello and Guiseppina Fusco. His parents saw to it that young Alfonso had a solid Christian education and proper sacramental instruction as well. While still young, Alfonso desired to become a priest and entered the seminary, studying hard and doing well. He was ordained in May of 1863. The young curate became increasingly aware of the deplorable conditions so many of the children endured in and around Angri. They were orphaned and abandoned boys and girls, hungry and poor and with no possibility of education or social advancement. He recalled a dream he had as a seminarian. “I dreamed that Jesus the Nazarene told me: Alfonso, you should found an Institute of Sisters that you will call ‘of the Nazarene’ and an orphanage for boys and girls. The ground is ready; you need only to build it. As soon as you become a priest, you should do this.” This dream was the impetus and directive that spurred Alfonso Fusco to open a house in Angri in 1878 called “Little House of Providence” for poor and abandoned children. With the bishop’s blessing, four young women, wanting to serve Jesus in a special way, joined Fr. Fusco in his endeavor and became the first Sisters of the new religious community. Many children came to the “Little House,” which eventually expanded, providing not only food and shelter along with Christian and secular instruction, but also training in various trades to secure the futures of the young boys and girls. (So like his friend, Fr. Fusco became known as the “Don Bosco of the South”!) Many young women joined the new Community of Sisters, as well, which upon ecclesiastical request was called the “Sisters of St. John the Baptist” after the patron saint of the town of Angri. Even so, Fr. Fusco always kept Jesus of Nazareth as the primary focus and spirit of the little community. Like Jesus of Nazareth, the early years were those of poverty and humble beginnings. There was no money to speak of yet many mouths to feed and bodies to clothe. His absolute trust that God would always provide what was needed proved a test of Faith for all but truly miraculous in outcome many a time! Fr. Alfonso Maria Fusco, so beloved, died a holy, peaceful death on February 6, 1910. He promised to pray for the young Community and to be with them always. Many blessings did follow in the years after his physical departure, including the growth of the Congregation to nearly 900 Sisters today, ministering in 18 countries around the world. Two graces or miracles in particular have brought this holy priest to be recognized by the Universal Church as a “SAINT”. In 1998, a young African boy, Gershom Chizuma, was in a coma in a hospital in Zambia, dying from complications of malaria. A Baptistine Sister was visiting another child at the hospital when she noticed a mother crying as she sat by her child’s bedside. She approached her, gave her Fr. Fusco’s prayer card and told her to pray to him fervently during the night for her son’s healing. She did so and the following morning Gershom was sitting up, smiling and completely healed. This miracle was accepted by the Church for the Beatification of Fr. Alfonso Maria Fusco. In October of 2009, Sr. Mary Dulcis Miniello, a Sister of St. John the Baptist, was dying in a hospital in Italy from complications caused by two ruptured brain aneurysms that had left her almost completely incapacitated. Many of her Sisters in Community, along with school children, family and friends had been constantly beseeching Fr. Fusco to intercede on Sister’s behalf for healing. On Sunday, October 25, 2009 Sr. Mary Dulcis was suddenly filled with incredible joy and a “great force”, causing her to “wake from sleep” and restoring her to complete and enduring health. This miracle, attributed to Blessed Alfonso M. Fusco’s intercession, was accepted by the Church officials as proof of Fr. Fusco’s sanctity. It was the final step in declaring this holy priest, “SAINT ALFONSO MARIA FUSCO”, a model of love and trust for all. Saint Alfonso Maria Fusco, pray for us.
