Today, Sunday October 16, in Rome, the Founder of our Religious Community has been raised to the rank of SAINT for the good of the Church by Pope Francis. Many of our Sisters (happily including me!) will be there for the celebration and will remember you in thought and prayer. I did want you to know a little about this special, holy man so that you too might join me in spirit and joy. Peace and blessings - Sr. Elsa Jeronimo C.S.JB. On March 23, 1839 Alfonso Maria was born in Angri, Italy to a fervent, Catholic couple, Aniello and Guiseppina Fusco. His parents saw to it that young Alfonso had a solid Christian education and proper sacramental instruction as well. While still young, Alfonso desired to become a priest and entered the seminary, studying hard and doing well. He was ordained in May of 1863. The young curate became increasingly aware of the deplorable conditions so many of the children endured in and around Angri. They were orphaned and abandoned boys and girls, hungry and poor and with no possibility of education or social advancement. He recalled a dream he had as a seminarian. “I dreamed that Jesus the Nazarene told me: Alfonso, you should found an Institute of Sisters that you will call ‘of the Nazarene’ and an orphanage for boys and girls. The ground is ready; you need only to build it. As soon as you become a priest, you should do this.” This dream was the impetus and directive that spurred Alfonso Fusco to open a house in Angri in 1878 called “Little House of Providence” for poor and abandoned children. With the bishop’s blessing, four young women, wanting to serve Jesus in a special way, joined Fr. Fusco in his endeavor and became the first Sisters of the new religious community. Many children came to the “Little House,” which eventually expanded, providing not only food and shelter along with Christian and secular instruction, but also training in various trades to secure the futures of the young boys and girls. (So like his friend, Fr. Fusco became known as the “Don Bosco of the South”!) Many young women joined the new Community of Sisters, as well, which upon ecclesiastical request was called the “Sisters of St. John the Baptist” after the patron saint of the town of Angri. Even so, Fr. Fusco always kept Jesus of Nazareth as the primary focus and spirit of the little community. Like Jesus of Nazareth, the early years were those of poverty and humble beginnings. There was no money to speak of yet many mouths to feed and bodies to clothe. His absolute trust that God would always provide what was needed proved a test of Faith for all but truly miraculous in outcome many a time! Fr. Alfonso Maria Fusco, so beloved, died a holy, peaceful death on February 6, 1910. He promised to pray for the young Community and to be with them always. Many blessings did follow in the years after his physical departure, including the growth of the Congregation to nearly 900 Sisters today, ministering in 18 countries around the world. Two graces or miracles in particular have brought this holy priest to be recognized by the Universal Church as a “SAINT”. In 1998, a young African boy, Gershom Chizuma, was in a coma in a hospital in Zambia, dying from complications of malaria. A Baptistine Sister was visiting another child at the hospital when she noticed a mother crying as she sat by her child’s bedside. She approached her, gave her Fr. Fusco’s prayer card and told her to pray to him fervently during the night for her son’s healing. She did so and the following morning Gershom was sitting up, smiling and completely healed. This miracle was accepted by the Church for the Beatification of Fr. Alfonso Maria Fusco. In October of 2009, Sr. Mary Dulcis Miniello, a Sister of St. John the Baptist, was dying in a hospital in Italy from complications caused by two ruptured brain aneurysms that had left her almost completely incapacitated. Many of her Sisters in Community, along with school children, family and friends had been constantly beseeching Fr. Fusco to intercede on Sister’s behalf for healing. On Sunday, October 25, 2009 Sr. Mary Dulcis was suddenly filled with incredible joy and a “great force”, causing her to “wake from sleep” and restoring her to complete and enduring health. This miracle, attributed to Blessed Alfonso M. Fusco’s intercession, was accepted by the Church officials as proof of Fr. Fusco’s sanctity. It was the final step in declaring this holy priest, “SAINT ALFONSO MARIA FUSCO”, a model of love and trust for all. Saint Alfonso Maria Fusco, pray for us. These familiar words spoken first by St. John the Baptist are beautiful words that can be prayer- fully meditated upon and lived throughout our lives. When John had first spoken these words, the “Lamb of God” was seen in a very ordinary way. The eyes of all present saw only an ordinary man approaching the scene. However, the eyes of faith saw something more. John saw the ONE who would give His life for the salvation of the world as the Sacrificial Lamb, and seeing Him, he pro- claims in affirmation, by giving witness to the One whose fullness everyone has received grace upon grace, “Behold the Lamb of God!” In Jesus, John found the meaning of his own vocation, to testify to the light, so that all might believe through him. In our daily liturgical celebrations, the same words are uttered each time the Sacred Host is held up for all to see. We see Jesus, the Sacrificial Lamb, in an even more veiled way. We see with our eyes, a piece of bread. But with the eyes of faith, we behold our Savior, seeing His glory, the glory as of the Father’s only Son, full of grace and truth.

We are reliving in our hearts yesterday's solemn liturgical celebration which saw seven new Blesseds raised to the glory of the altars. I address warm greetings to all of you, dear pilgrims gathered in Rome for this happy event. Above all, I would like to share with you and to entrust to the Lord the anxiety and concern that has been stirred up within us by this sensitive moment in international relations. The family atmosphere of today's meeting gives us an opportunity to thank the Lord together for the new Blesseds and to reflect once again on their Gospel witness and the rich spiritual inheritance they have bequeathed to us. 2. Welcome, dear pilgrims who have come to Rome to take part in the beatification of Archbishop Ignatius Maloyan. I greet all the Bishops of the Armenian Catholic Church who have come here as well as the representatives of the civil authorities of Armenia. In particular, I extend a greeting to the young people, asking the Lord to make them courageous Gospel witnesses. During my recent visit to Armenia, I could gauge the attachment to the Christian faith testified by so many episodes of its history! This is borne out by the beautiful testimony left by Bl.

  • Pope Francis Canonizes Seven New Saints
Pope Francis canonizes seven new saints An estimated 80,000 people attended the canonization Mass at St. Peter's Square in Vatican City October 17, 2016 The seven new saints of the church were holy not because of their own efforts but because of "the Lord who triumphs in them and with them," Pope Francis said, reported Catholic News Service. Each one "struggled to the very end with all their strength," which they received through perseverance and prayer, the pope said Oct. 16 at a canonization Mass in St. Peter's Square. "They remained firm in faith, with a generous and steadfast heart. Through their example and their intercession, may God also enable us to be men and women of prayer," the pope told the estimated 80,000 people present at the Mass. Seven large tapestries bearing the portraits of the new saints decorated the facade of St. Peter's Basilica, some representing specific aspects of their lives that exemplified their holiness. Argentine "gaucho priest," St. Jose Gabriel del Rosario Brochero was portrayed sitting on a donkey, his humble means of transportation when traveling thousands of miles to minister to the poor and the sick. St. Jose Sanchez del Rio, a 14-year-old Mexican boy martyred for refusing to renounce his faith during the Cristero War of the 1920s, was depicted holding a palm branch and rosary while a trail of blood and a single bullet were at his feet. St. Salomone Leclerq, who was killed after refusing to renounce his faith at the height of the French Revolution, was shown with his eyes fixed toward heaven as an angel carried a palm, symbolizing his martyrdom for the faith.

T“We’ve begun the planning, but some of the sisters on the committee were in Rome” for the canonization, said Sister Mary Crucifix Pandullo, C.S.JB., director for the Staten Island Regional Catechetical Office. Watching the canonization on television “was wonder- ful,” she said. “It was like being there and sharing the mo- ment. I saw some of our sisters there in the crowd. It was really an unbelievable grace. We’ve been praying for this. This is a great gift to the Church as well.’’ St. Alfonso was one of seven people—six men and one woman—canonized in front of 80,000 people from around the world by the Holy Father. Sister Claudette Jaszczynski, C.S.JB., provincial superior for the Sisters of St. John the Baptist’s American Province which covers New York and New Jersey, was one of the sisters from the United States in St. Peter’s Square for the canonization. “To be present at this canonization was a great grace and gift for me as I witnessed the Church’s recognition and its proclamation that these seven holy men and woman have lived lives in accord with the Gospel,” said Sister Clau- dette in an email from the “shadows of the Vatican wall!” “What I will remember the most is I was part of the Baptistine global family that gathered here in St.
