October 2016.Pub St. Brigid’s Parish, Killester Newsletter September/October 2016 Dear People of Killester, As I begin my ministry among you, I need you to help me to serve you. Firstly, I need your guidance and direction. I come among you as a stranger, but as one who is keen to get to know you and to learn what is especially important to know about you and your community. There is a story told of Saint John Vianney, patron of priests (especially par- ish priests) who simply became known as The ‘Curé’ (Parish Priest) of Ars. When he got lost on his way to his little parish near Lyon in France, a boy showed him the road to the place of his new appointment. And then the Saint said to him, “You have shown me the way to Ars, I will show you the way to heaven”. St. Paul describes the Church as like the human body made up of many parts, all of which need each other. No one can regard him or herself as independent of others, or ignore them. This is key to our understanding of ourselves as Christians whether on a parish, local, national or global level. This means we all have a part to play, and everyone’s contribution is impor- tant. I know that God has given many gifts to the people of our parish. I hope I can help people to discover and use their gifts, especially those who feel called or would like to do something, but may be unsure as to how to begin. I have sometimes been slow to delegate roles to others and have tended to take on too much myself. I hope that when I do this or make mistakes that you will gently challenge me. Finally, I ask for your prayers. I know just how important prayer is. I would not have remained a priest in these difficult times were it not for the prayers of so many, many people who remember me each day or night. I once served in a parish and didn’t know what to do to help the people. That parish brought me to my knees – and that was a good thing. I realise that when I pray each day for my people that this is the most important part of my day, and that all God does is far more impor- tant that the little I can. I will pray for you as you pray for me. I am delighted God has brought me to Killester. I have already experienced the warmth and support of the people and especially of Fr. Alex Stenson who has done a great deal to help me. Thank you for allowing me to serve you. Bail ó Dhia oraibh. Eucharistic Adoration. Please note that Eucharistic Adoration hours have changed from Wednesdays to Tuesdays which commenced on Tuesday 6th September, 2016. Eucharistic Adoration will now take place in our Church on Monday and Tuesday after 10.00 am Mass until 3.00 pm each day and on Thursday night between 7.00 and 8.00 pm. If you are prepared to ‘watch for one hour’ of adoration per week you will be very welcome. We also invite everyone to spend some time - even a few minutes – in prayer and reflection. Each Thursday night for the Autumn months we will be praying for the Pope’s intentions; respect for women and their contribution to be appreciated. All Parishioners are welcome. Blessed Elizabeth of the Trinity We have just celebrated in recent weeks the wonderful canonisation of Mother Teresa of Calcutta as saint. In a few weeks time on Sunday 16th October Pope Francis will canonise Blesseds Salomone Leclercq, José Sanchez del Rio, Manuel González García, LodovicoPavoni, Alfonso Maria Fusco, José Gabriel del Rosario Brochero, and Elisabeth of the Holy Trinity. Blessed Elizabeth of the Trinity, a French Carmelite sister and mystic is not a household name. Elizabeth is the only female mystic of the Twentieth Century to be quoted in the Catechism of the Catholic Church. Blessed Elizabeth profoundly influenced Venerable Edel Quinn, the young Irishwoman who as an envoy helped spread the Legion of Mary in Eastern Africa. Blessed Elizabeth’s has spoken of the Blessed Trinity as ‘our dwelling place, our home, the Father's house which we must never leave.' It has been said if we wish to seriously try to live the Christian life in depth, we will have to learn to practice in real earnest, living with the tremendous reality of the indwelling of the Trinity in our souls. Blessed Elizabeth of the Trinity was one of Edel’s favourite authors. For Elizabeth, there is no substantial difference between the Indwelling Trinity and the reality of Heaven. The only difference between the two is that we live the mystery of Indwelling by faith and Heaven by direct and beatific vision. Once this is grasped it is easy to understand why Edel craved moments of time and indeed long hours if possi- ble, of gentle silence and recollection. Blessed Elizabeth died at just 26 years of age in November 1906, ten months before Edel Quinn was born. It has been said of her that she was equally at home on the dance floor, tennis court or travelling in the Alps. At her beatification in 1984, St. John Paul II identified Elizabeth of the Trinity as an important influence in his own spirituality. Most of Blessed Elizabeth’s writings are in the form of letters written to family and friends and to fellow Car- melites to help them in prayer. She presented the Trinity as our home, not just for a moment but the whole time. This is where we are called to live. In practice this means learning in each moment to let go of all self-occupation and to allow ourselves to be caught up in God. She believed that her mission in heaven would be to help souls on earth avail themselves of the transforming power of God. Throughout the illness that would cause her early death, she continued to encourage her friends and family to trust in the power of God more than their own inadequacies. She was firmly convinced that the reality of heaven is not simply something for the future, but instead something already beginning now in faith. Blessed Elizabeth of the Trinity intends that we do not simply admire her work, but that we experience the spiritual space it opens up for the praise of God. She would be disappointed if we only read her spiritual message. She told those closest to her that it would increase her joy in heaven if she was asked to help. Through her canonization, the Church is also encouraging us to ask for her intercession so that in our own time we might rediscover the gift of contemplative prayer for our lives. QUOTES OF BLESSED ELIZABETH OF THE TRINITY The Trinity - this is our dwelling, our 'home', the Father's house that we must never leave. Believe that He loves you. He wants to help you Himself in the struggles which you must undergo. Believe in His Love, His exceeding Love. A soul united to Jesus is a living smile which radiates Him. I leave you my faith in the presence of God, of the God who is all Love dwelling in our souls. I confide to you: it is this intimacy with Him 'within' which has been the beautiful sun illuminating my life, making it already an anticipated heaven. I think that in heaven my mission will be to draw souls, by helping them go out of themselves to cling to God by a wholly simple and loving movement, and to keep them in this great silence within, that will allow God to communicate Himself to them and transform them into Himself. These familiar words spoken first by St. John the Baptist are beautiful words that can be prayer- fully meditated upon and lived throughout our lives. When John had first spoken these words, the “Lamb of God” was seen in a very ordinary way. The eyes of all present saw only an ordinary man approaching the scene. However, the eyes of faith saw something more. John saw the ONE who would give His life for the salvation of the world as the Sacrificial Lamb, and seeing Him, he pro- claims in affirmation, by giving witness to the One whose fullness everyone has received grace upon grace, “Behold the Lamb of God!” In Jesus, John found the meaning of his own vocation, to testify to the light, so that all might believe through him. In our daily liturgical celebrations, the same words are uttered each time the Sacred Host is held up for all to see. We see Jesus, the Sacrificial Lamb, in an even more veiled way. We see with our eyes, a piece of bread. But with the eyes of faith, we behold our Savior, seeing His glory, the glory as of the Father’s only Son, full of grace and truth.

We are reliving in our hearts yesterday's solemn liturgical celebration which saw seven new Blesseds raised to the glory of the altars. I address warm greetings to all of you, dear pilgrims gathered in Rome for this happy event. Above all, I would like to share with you and to entrust to the Lord the anxiety and concern that has been stirred up within us by this sensitive moment in international relations. The family atmosphere of today's meeting gives us an opportunity to thank the Lord together for the new Blesseds and to reflect once again on their Gospel witness and the rich spiritual inheritance they have bequeathed to us. 2. Welcome, dear pilgrims who have come to Rome to take part in the beatification of Archbishop Ignatius Maloyan. I greet all the Bishops of the Armenian Catholic Church who have come here as well as the representatives of the civil authorities of Armenia. In particular, I extend a greeting to the young people, asking the Lord to make them courageous Gospel witnesses. During my recent visit to Armenia, I could gauge the attachment to the Christian faith testified by so many episodes of its history! This is borne out by the beautiful testimony left by Bl.

  • Pope Francis Canonizes Seven New Saints
Pope Francis canonizes seven new saints An estimated 80,000 people attended the canonization Mass at St. Peter's Square in Vatican City October 17, 2016 The seven new saints of the church were holy not because of their own efforts but because of "the Lord who triumphs in them and with them," Pope Francis said, reported Catholic News Service. Each one "struggled to the very end with all their strength," which they received through perseverance and prayer, the pope said Oct. 16 at a canonization Mass in St. Peter's Square. "They remained firm in faith, with a generous and steadfast heart. Through their example and their intercession, may God also enable us to be men and women of prayer," the pope told the estimated 80,000 people present at the Mass. Seven large tapestries bearing the portraits of the new saints decorated the facade of St. Peter's Basilica, some representing specific aspects of their lives that exemplified their holiness. Argentine "gaucho priest," St. Jose Gabriel del Rosario Brochero was portrayed sitting on a donkey, his humble means of transportation when traveling thousands of miles to minister to the poor and the sick. St. Jose Sanchez del Rio, a 14-year-old Mexican boy martyred for refusing to renounce his faith during the Cristero War of the 1920s, was depicted holding a palm branch and rosary while a trail of blood and a single bullet were at his feet. St. Salomone Leclerq, who was killed after refusing to renounce his faith at the height of the French Revolution, was shown with his eyes fixed toward heaven as an angel carried a palm, symbolizing his martyrdom for the faith.
