St. Brigid’s Parish, Killester Newsletter September/October 2016 Dear People of Killester, As I begin my ministry among you, I need you to help me to serve you. Firstly, I need your guidance and direction. I come among you as a stranger, but as one who is keen to get to know you and to learn what is especially important to know about you and your community. There is a story told of Saint John Vianney, patron of priests (especially par- ish priests) who simply became known as The ‘Curé’ (Parish Priest) of Ars. When he got lost on his way to his little parish near Lyon in France, a boy showed him the road to the place of his new appointment. And then the Saint said to him, “You have shown me the way to Ars, I will show you the way to heaven”. St. Paul describes the Church as like the human body made up of many parts, all of which need each other. No one can regard him or herself as independent of others, or ignore them. This is key to our understanding of ourselves as Christians whether on a parish, local, national or global level. This means we all have a part to play, and everyone’s contribution is impor- tant. I know that God has given many gifts to the people of our parish. I hope I can help people to discover and use their gifts, especially those who feel called or would like to do something, but may be unsure as to how to begin. I have sometimes been slow to delegate roles to others and have tended to take on too much myself. I hope that when I do this or make mistakes that you will gently challenge me. Finally, I ask for your prayers. I know just how important prayer is. I would not have remained a priest in these difficult times were it not for the prayers of so many, many people who remember me each day or night. I once served in a parish and didn’t know what to do to help the people. That parish brought me to my knees – and that was a good thing. I realise that when I pray each day for my people that this is the most important part of my day, and that all God does is far more impor- tant that the little I can. I will pray for you as you pray for me. I am delighted God has brought me to Killester. I have already experienced the warmth and support of the people and especially of Fr. Alex Stenson who has done a great deal to help me. Thank you for allowing me to serve you. Bail ó Dhia oraibh. Eucharistic Adoration. Please note that Eucharistic Adoration hours have changed from Wednesdays to Tuesdays which commenced on Tuesday 6th September, 2016. Eucharistic Adoration will now take place in our Church on Monday and Tuesday after 10.00 am Mass until 3.00 pm each day and on Thursday night between 7.00 and 8.00 pm. If you are prepared to ‘watch for one hour’ of adoration per week you will be very welcome. We also invite everyone to spend some time - even a few minutes – in prayer and reflection. Each Thursday night for the Autumn months we will be praying for the Pope’s intentions; respect for women and their contribution to be appreciated. All Parishioners are welcome. Blessed Elizabeth of the Trinity We have just celebrated in recent weeks the wonderful canonisation of Mother Teresa of Calcutta as saint. In a few weeks time on Sunday 16th October Pope Francis will canonise Blesseds Salomone Leclercq, José Sanchez del Rio, Manuel González García, LodovicoPavoni, Alfonso Maria Fusco, José Gabriel del Rosario Brochero, and Elisabeth of the Holy Trinity. Blessed Elizabeth of the Trinity, a French Carmelite sister and mystic is not a household name. Elizabeth is the only female mystic of the Twentieth Century to be quoted in the Catechism of the Catholic Church. Blessed Elizabeth profoundly influenced Venerable Edel Quinn, the young Irishwoman who as an envoy helped spread the Legion of Mary in Eastern Africa. Blessed Elizabeth’s has spoken of the Blessed Trinity as ‘our dwelling place, our home, the Father's house which we must never leave.' It has been said if we wish to seriously try to live the Christian life in depth, we will have to learn to practice in real earnest, living with the tremendous reality of the indwelling of the Trinity in our souls. Blessed Elizabeth of the Trinity was one of Edel’s favourite authors. For Elizabeth, there is no substantial difference between the Indwelling Trinity and the reality of Heaven. The only difference between the two is that we live the mystery of Indwelling by faith and Heaven by direct and beatific vision. Once this is grasped it is easy to understand why Edel craved moments of time and indeed long hours if possi- ble, of gentle silence and recollection. Blessed Elizabeth died at just 26 years of age in November 1906, ten months before Edel Quinn was born. It has been said of her that she was equally at home on the dance floor, tennis court or travelling in the Alps. At her beatification in 1984, St. John Paul II identified Elizabeth of the Trinity as an important influence in his own spirituality. Most of Blessed Elizabeth’s writings are in the form of letters written to family and friends and to fellow Car- melites to help them in prayer. She presented the Trinity as our home, not just for a moment but the whole time. This is where we are called to live. In practice this means learning in each moment to let go of all self-occupation and to allow ourselves to be caught up in God. She believed that her mission in heaven would be to help souls on earth avail themselves of the transforming power of God. Throughout the illness that would cause her early death, she continued to encourage her friends and family to trust in the power of God more than their own inadequacies. She was firmly convinced that the reality of heaven is not simply something for the future, but instead something already beginning now in faith. Blessed Elizabeth of the Trinity intends that we do not simply admire her work, but that we experience the spiritual space it opens up for the praise of God. She would be disappointed if we only read her spiritual message. She told those closest to her that it would increase her joy in heaven if she was asked to help. Through her canonization, the Church is also encouraging us to ask for her intercession so that in our own time we might rediscover the gift of contemplative prayer for our lives. QUOTES OF BLESSED ELIZABETH OF THE TRINITY The Trinity - this is our dwelling, our 'home', the Father's house that we must never leave. Believe that He loves you. He wants to help you Himself in the struggles which you must undergo. Believe in His Love, His exceeding Love. A soul united to Jesus is a living smile which radiates Him. I leave you my faith in the presence of God, of the God who is all Love dwelling in our souls. I confide to you: it is this intimacy with Him 'within' which has been the beautiful sun illuminating my life, making it already an anticipated heaven. I think that in heaven my mission will be to draw souls, by helping them go out of themselves to cling to God by a wholly simple and loving movement, and to keep them in this great silence within, that will allow God to communicate Himself to them and transform them into Himself.
