II. ARCHEPARCHY OF TELLICHERRY

SUFFRAGANS : BELTHANGADY, BHADRAVATHY , MANDYA PATRON : ST. JOSEPH The eparchy of Tellicherry, was erected by the Bull ‘Ad Christi Ecclesiam Regendam’ dated 31st December 1953 of His Holiness Pope Pius XII of happy memory, as a suffragan of the Archeparchy of , for the Catholics of the Syro Malabar Church who migrated to Malabar from the old Syro Malabar eparchy of erstwhile and Cochin States. The boundaries of the new eparchy were the same as those of the Latin Diocese of Calicut. But later, as Catholics of Syro- Malabar Church migrated even to the states of and , the boundaries were extended to the present Latin dioceses of , Chickmagalur, , Shimoga and Ootacamund by a decree of the Holy See dated 29th April, 1955.

1. BIFURCATIONS 1. MANANTHAVADY The eparchy was bifurcated and the new eparchy of Manathavady formed on the 1st of March 1973 by the Papal Bull “Quanta Gloria Orientales Ecclesiae”. The territory of the new eparchy extends to the districts of Wayanad, Shimoga, Chickmagalur, Hassan, Mandya, Mysore and Nilgiris. Area : 13,036 sq. km. Catholic Population : 1,74,020 Parishes & Mission Stations : 166 : 218 Religious Priests : 28 Women Religious : 1325 2. THAMARASSERY By the Papal Bull ‘Constant Non Mode Eparchiam Tellicheriensis’ the eparchy was again bifurcated on 28th April, 1986 and the new eparchy of Thamarassery formed comprising the districts of Calicut and . By the Papal Bull ‘Cum Ampla’ the new eparchy of Belthangady was erected by His Holiness Pope John Paul II. The eparchy of Belthangady spreads over the three civil districts of Dakshina Kannada, Uduppi and Kodagu in Karnataka State. Area : 12,543 sq. km. Catholic Population : 30,000 Parishes & Mission Stations : 52 Priests : 37 Religious Priests : 20 Women Religious : 191 4. BHADRAVATHY Mananthavady was bifurcated and the new eparchy of Bhadravathi formed on 2007. The territory of new eparchy extends to Shimoga and Chickmagalur districts in Karnataka. Area : 15,666 sq.km Catholic Population : 9213 Parishes & Mission Stations : 34 Religious Priests : 31 Women Religious : 108 5. MANDYA Mananthavady was bifurcated again and the new eparchy of Mandya was formed on 18th January 2010. The diocese has been established for the Syro Malabar Catholics and the territory of the new eparchy extends to Mandya, Mysore, Hassan and Chamarajnagar Districts in Karnataka. Area : 24,299 sq.km Catholic Population : 5000 Parishes & Mission Stations : 19 Priests : 9 Religious Priests : 15 Women Religious : 164 Archeparchy 36 Directory - 2013 2 ARCHEPARCHY By the Papal Bull “Spirituali Bono Christfidelium” dated May 18, 1995, Pope John Paul II raised the Eparchy of Tellicherry to the status of Metropolitan Archeparchy. 1. THE ARCHBISHOP MAR GEORGE VALIAMATTAM was born on 16th September, 1938 at Punnathara in the Archeparchy of as the eldest son of Thomas and Annamma Valiamattam. His family later migrated to Kodencherry in Calicut District. He had his school education at Nariveli and Punnathara and minor seminary studies at St. Mary’s Minor Seminary Thope, , Philosophical studies at Carmelgiri, and Theological studies at the Propoganda University, . He was ordained by Mar Sebastian Valloppilly on 30th November 1963 in Rome. After his ordination he took his doctorate in theology from the Gregorian University, Rome in 1967. He served the eparchy as assistant vicar of St. Mary’s Church, Kodencherry, Vicar of St. Mary’s Church, Thalanji, Secretary to the Bishop, Chancellor of the diocese, Diocesan Director of Catechism and Mission League and as Rector of the Minor Seminary. He served in the diocese of Thamarassery in the capacity of chancellor, secretary and Director of Catechism. When nominated the second Bishop of Tellicherry, he was the Forane Vicar at St. Thomas Forane Church, Shirady. He was consecrated Bishop at St. Joseph’s Cathedral Tellicherry by the Major Archbishop His Beatitude Mar Antony Cardinal Padiyara, assisted by Mar Joseph Powathil, Archbishop of Changanassery and Mar Sebastian Valloppilly, on May 1st, 1989 and assumed office on the same day. When the eparchy of Tellicherry was raised to the status of Metropolitan Archeparchy, he was promoted and appointed as its first Metropolitan Archbishop on May 18th, 1995. On July 24th 1995, he was installed as the Archbishop at a solemn ceremony in St. Joseph’s Cathedral Church presided over by the Major Archbishop His Beatitude Mar Antony Cardinal Padiyara.

Archeparchy 37 Directory - 2013 2. FIRST BISHOP MAR SEBASTIAN VALLOPPILLY, born on 4th August, 1911, at Kudakkachira in the eparchy of Palai, had his secular studies at S.B. College, Changanassery and St. Xavier’s College, Palayamkottai and Ecclesiastical studies at Papal Seminary, Kandy. He was ordained priest on 24th August, 1945. Nominated Apostolic Administrator of Tellicherry on 31st December, 1953, he took charge of the eparchy on 19th March, 1954. He was elected the first bishop of Tellicherry on 16th October, 1955 and consecrated on 8th January, 1956 at St. Peter’s Basilica, Rome by His Eminence Eugene Cardinal Tisserant. He sent his resignation letter to the Holy See on 4th August 1986 when he completed his 75 years of age, and his resignation was accepted on 18th February, 1989 when Mar George Valiamattam was appointed his successor.
