In the event, stakeholders, who require further details or clarification on any part of the content of the Public Summary Report, may contact RSPO Secretariat or Intertek Certification International. The full version of the assessment report has been submitted to RSPO Secretariat. 1.1.2 This Annual Surveillance Assessment (ASA-01) was conducted on the Ladang Sabah of IOI Corporation Berhad, from 11 – 14 March 2014 to assess the organization’s operations of the mill and its supply bases, for continued compliance against the RSPO Principles and Criteria (April 2013), Malaysian National Interpretation (MY- NI, November 2010) and RSPO Supply Chain Certification Standard (November 2011) for POM. This assessment also includes a review of the changes made by the PMU to comply with the requirements of the ratified new RSPO Principles and Criteria (effective 25 April 2013). It was found that the PMU is aware of the new RSPO Principles and Criteria and the transition period for compliance but has not yet make the necessary changes required. The plantation management unit (PMU) or management unit is equivalent to a certification unit as defined in the RSPO Certification Systems Document. Each PMU consists of one mill and its supply bases which are made up of estates owned by IOI Corporation Berhad 1.2 Location (address, GPS and map) of palm oil mill and estates Ladang Sabah Grouping consists of one (1) palm oil mill, namely Ladang Sabah Palm Oil Mill and eight (8) own supplying estates as indicated in Table 1 below, which includes the addresses and GPS locations of the mill and estates. The location maps are provided in Appendix B. Verification done on site during this Assessment confirmed that there were no outgrowers / independent suppliers / smallholders involved in the supply of FFB to the said PMU. Details of the planted hectarage for the FFB supply for Ladang Sabah Grouping are as shown in Table 2 below. This Assessment covered the overall land use for oil palm plantation areas, and the identified Conservation areas including HCV areas marked out at the estates. 2. The estates sampled for this Assessment have been selected based on their potential risks on social, environmental and biodiversity issues such as their proximity to forest reserves, hill sides, riparian zones and high conservation value areas. 1.4 Summary of plantings and cycle The 8 estates had been developed since 1991 and are all currently in the 1 st and 2 nd cycle of planting for the Oil Palms.     Southeast Asian Studies, Vol. 37, No.1, June 1999 Social Control and Bird's Nest Harvesting among the Idahan: A Preliminary Observation Mohamed Yusoff ISMAIL* Abstract This paper is an attempt to describe briefly the nature of bird's nest production among the Idahan. Since ancestral time the Idahan have developed a social mechanism, based on kinship principles, to control seasonal access to rock chambers bearing the nests, and to rotate harvesting rights between various clan members. Being an ethnic minority, the Idahan operate as a closely knit corporate group insofar as bird's nesting activities are concerned. The distribution system also ensures ethnic solidarity among the Idahan. The sole benefits of the harvests can only be enjoyed by them as the sole inheritor of the nesting caves provided that they work together as a closely integrated social and economic unit. Introduction The Idahan of Sabah have long been known for their involvement in the harvesting of edible bird's nests, a highly valued ingredient used in Chinese haut cuisine since the Ming Dynasty period. Although the Idahan are major producers of the nests, they are not the consumers. Instead almost all the harvested nests of the swiftlet species are sold to middlemen who in turn supply them to traders in Singapore and Hong Kong. The lucrative cash return the Idahan get from selling the produce makes bird's nest harvest­ ing an important, and indeed jealously guarded, occupation. The Idahan believe that the nests are a gift from their great ancestors, but are just too valuable, and perhaps too sacred, to be consumed as part of ordinary everyday meals.

    INVESTMENT PROSPECTS AND POTENTIAL IN THE FISHERIES SECTOR IN SABAH By Rayner Stuel Galid Director of Fisheries, Fisheries Department of Sabah. 1.0 Introduction One of the important national policies promulgated as a result of the 1997 start of the economic downturn was the emphasis on reducing the amount and value of foreign imports including food items. Concurrent with this policy, the government has embarked upon a program to increase local food production by enhancing and modernizing the agriculture sector. Thus the agriculture sector is once again in the limelight as it becomes one of the economic policy cornerstones upon which Malaysia hopes to consolidate and reinvigorate its economy. The fisheries sub sector has to perform well in order to contribute to these redefined long-term agriculture goals. Fish in Malaysia is everyman’s food. The per capita consumption of fish and other seafood in the country is estimated to be close to 40 kg. This represents more than two-thirds of the total animal protein consumed per capita locally. By end of the planning period of the Third National Agriculture Policy which is year 2010, it is expected that the total national fish production will be 1.93 million metric tonnes worth more than RM9.36 billion. To this end the Fisheries Department of Malaysia has targeted the fisheries sub-sector to grow by at least 5% annually. The State of Sabah has many potential to be a major contributor in achieving these national goals. This does not only include in the production of fresh fish produce and raw fisheries materials both from marine capture fisheries and aquaculture but also from in production of downstream processed fisheries products.
