  • Landslide Factors and Susceptibility Mapping on Natural and Artificial
Sains Malaysiana 46(9)(2017): 1531–1540 http://dx.doi.org/10.17576/jsm-2017-4609-23 Landslide Factors and Susceptibility Mapping on Natural and Artificial Slopes in Kundasang, Sabah (Faktor Tanah Runtuh dan Pemetaan Kerentanan ke atas Cerun Semula Jadi dan Buatan di Kundasang, Sabah) KAMILIA SHARIR, RODEANO ROSLEE, LEE KHAI ERN & NORBERT SIMON* ABSTRACT This study was carried out on the hilly topographic area in Kundasang, Sabah. This area is known to be extremely prone to landslides that occurred either naturally or by human interference to natural slopes. Aerial photographs interpretation was conducted in order to identify landslide distributions across three assessment years (2012, 2009 and 1984). These datasets were classified into two landslides groups based on their occurrences; natural and artificial. A total of 362 naturally occurring landslides were identified and another 133 are artificial slope landslides. Physical parameters which include lithology, slope angle, slope aspect and soil series were analyzed with each landslide group to examine the different influence of these parameters on each of the group. From the analysis, the landslide density for the natural landslide group shows that more than 35° slope angle and slope aspect facing east and southwest are prone to landslides. In terms of geological materials, high landslide density is recorded in the phyllite, shale, siltstone and sandstone lithologies group and the Pinosuk, Kepayan and Trusmadi soil series. In contrast, for the artificial slope landslide, high landslide density is observed in the 25°-35° slope angle and similar density in every slope aspect classes. The geological materials however have similar landslide density across their factors’ classes.

  • Pandangan Dunia Dan Konteks Upacara Dalam Sumazau Penampang, Sazau Papar Dan Sumazau Paina Membakut
Kata kunci: Sumazau Penampang; Sazau Papar; Sumazau Paina Membakut; pandangan dunia; ritual ABSTRACT For generations, a belief in various benevolent and malevolent spirits have shaped the world view and beliefs of the Kadazans in Sabah.

Sabah and Sarawak cover the northern coast of the island. The lower two‐thirds of Borneo is Kalimantan, which belongs to Indonesia. The area has a fascinating history, and probably because it is on one of the main trade routes through South East Asia, Borneo has had many masters. Sabah and Sarawak were incorporated into the Federation of Malaysia in 1963 and Malaysia is now regarded a safe and orderly Islamic country. Sabah has a diverse ethnic population of just over 3 million people with 32 recognised ethnic groups. The largest of these is the Malays (these include the many different cultural groups that originally existed in their own homeland within Sabah), Chinese and “non‐official immigrants” (mainly Filipino and Indonesian). In recent centuries piracy was common here, but it is now generally considered relatively safe for cruising. However, the nearby islands of Southern Philippines have had some problems with militant fundamentalist Muslim groups – there have been riots and violence on Mindanao and the Tawi Tawi Islands and isolated episodes of kidnapping of people from Sabah in the past 10 years or so.

  • The Kimanis By-Election: a Much-Needed Sweet (Manis) Victory for Warisan
ISSUE: 2020 No. 3 ISSN 2335-6677 RESEARCHERS AT ISEAS – YUSOF ISHAK INSTITUTE ANALYSE CURRENT EVENTS Singapore |16 January 2020 The Kimanis By-election: A Much-needed Sweet (Manis) Victory for Warisan Lee Poh Onn and Kevin Zhang*1 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY • On 18 January 2020, a by-election will be held for the parliamentary seat of Kimanis in Sabah. The Federal Court has upheld the Election Court's ruling that Anifah Aman's victory in the 14th General Elections (GE14) was nullified by election discrepancies. • This by-election is seen as a referendum on the Warisan state government’s performance over the past 18 months since replacing the Barisan Nasional (BN) after GE14, and the outcome would have some impact on Sabah Chief Minister Shafie Apdal’s standing. Warisan-PH and BN had won an equal number of state seats, but Warisan formed the state government only after the defection of some BN state assemblymen. At the Federal level, the Pakatan Harapan government sorely needs a victory in Kimanis to reverse the trend of by-election defeats it has suffered over the past year. • Warisan began the election contest on a stronger footing but it is shaping up to be a close fight. Both candidates, Warisan’s Karim Bujang and UMNO’s Mohamad Alamin, have strong political experience in Kimanis. • Bread and butter issues matter greatly to Kimanis residents who mostly suffer from low incomes and poor infrastructure. Warisan is on the defensive against the BN’s claims that the state government has failed to bring economic uplift to the area.

SHS Web of Conferences 12, 01068 (2014) DOI: 10.1051/shsconf/20141201068 C Owned by the authors, published by EDP Sciences, 2014 Man-Made Wildlife Tourism Destination: The Visitors Perspective on Lok Kawi Wildlife Park, Sabah, Malaysia Boyd Sun Fatt1, Cindy Johnny1 , Shirley M. Bakansing2 1Faculty of Hotel & Tourism Management, University Teknologi MARA (UiTM), Sabah Branch 2School of International Tropical Forestry, Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS), Sabah Abstract. Sabah is blessed with natural forest habitats and rich with floras and faunas. Amongst its’ attraction is wildlife endemism. Lok Kawi Wildlife Park was established to provide an alternative wildlife tourism destination with its inhabitants from the wildlife species of Borneo. Since its opening in 2007, multitudes of tourists have visited the park. However, there has been no study to identify the visitor’s perspective on Lok Kawi Wildlife Park as man-made wildlife tourism destination. The study aims to assist the park’s management for the betterment of the park’s facilities and future development. A convenience sampling and a designed questionnaire was applied in this study, distributed after the visitors visited the park. The results showed that majority of the visitors were Malaysian and only a quarter were foreign visitors. Majority indicated that visiting the park is for recreational outing (holiday) and only a few indicated that is an educational visit. Majority of the respondents knew the meaning of wildlife tourism and visiting the park’s is part of wildlife tourism. Most of the respondents came to know about the park’s existence through the local media and mostly agreed that the park indeed provide an authentic learning experience about wildlife, whilst creating wildlife conservation awareness.

ARTICLE DETAILS ABSTRACT Article History: This study focused on the engineering geological investigation of slope failures along Penampang to Tambunan road, approximately 12th km to 101th km from Kota Kinabalu city, Sabah, Malaysia. The area is underlain by the Crocker Received 12 November 2017 Formation (Late Eocene to Early Miocene age) and the Quaternary Deposits (Recent age). These rock units show Accepted 12 December 2017 Available online 1 January 2018 numerous lineaments with complex structural styles developed during several regional Tertiary tectonic activities. The tectonic complexities influenced the physical and mechanical properties of the rocks, resulting in a high degree of weathering and instability. The weathered materials are unstable and may experience sliding due to by high pore pressure and intensively geomorphological processes. In this study, a total of 31 selected critical slope failures were studied and classified into two main groups: rock slope and soil slope.

Journal of Contemporary Issues and Thought, 10, 36-45. https://doi.org/10.37134/jcit.vol10.4.2020 Abstract Kg. Kolosunan is located upstream from Babagon dam in Sabah and currently gazetted as Babagon water catchment area. Since then, human activities on land and river within the vicinity of the dam has since been restricted by local authorities. This has affected local communities’ livelihood that has traditionally depended on farming and river fishing to source for food. Chosen as a pilot project for Payment for Ecosystem Services (PES) since 2015, this project aims to educate and gain support from the local communities to conserve the area. This paper explores the potential(s) of ecotourism in Kg. Kolosunan as an alternative livelihood for the local community which were affected by resource use restriction due to the gazettement of the water catchment area. Data collections were done through survey, in-depth interviews analyzed using SWOT analysis and finally from previous reports.
