  • MALAYSIA the Kampung Kuantan Firefly Reserve Jamil Bin
MALAYSIA The Kampung Kuantan Firefly Reserve Jamil bin Hamzah and Suzana Mohkeri Wetlands International-Asia Pacific INTRODUCTION Malaysia is comprised of 13 federal states with Kuala Lumpur as the federal capital situated in the Federal Territory. Eleven states are in West Malaysia (also known as Peninsular Malaysia) and two states are situated in Borneo Island. Selangor is one of the most highly developed and urbanized states in Malaysia. However, there are still large areas of forested lands scattered throughout the state either under forest reserves, owned by the state, private companies or private landowners. Since the beginning of civilization rivers have been the most important source of food, water resources and transportation. In Malaysia, human settlement always related or concentrated along the rivers. Sungai Selangor (Selangor River), is one of the main rivers in the state of Selangor. The headwater of Sungai Selangor originates from the highland area of the Titiwangsa Range, which is part of the Main Range, the backbone of Peninsular Malaysia. It is an important source of water supply for domestic and agriculture use and fishing industries for people living along the riverbanks. Sungai Selangor flows mainly through oil palm estates and small villages and it does not pass through any major towns. Thus the riparian vegetation along the riverbanks is still intact. According to a report prepared by the Department of Environment, Sungai Selangor river basin is listed as one of the two cleanest rivers in Selangor (Environmental Quality Report, 1996). This river is highlighted here not because of its important food and water resources but of its ecotourism factor.

They can have smaller electorates, if voters can be more evenly spread out across constituencies. At least one parliamentary seat should be taken from less populous areas and given to Greater Johor Bahru. Excessively over-represented parliamentary constituencies: No. Constituency Electorate As % of average 1 P143 Pagoh 36,387 57.37% 2 P142 Labis 37,569 59.23% 3 P157 Pengerang 38,338 60.44% 4 P155 Tenggara 40,670 64.12% 5 P151 Simpang Renggam 41,052 64.72% 6 P153 Sembrong 41,629 65.63% 7 P141 Sekijang 41,896 66.05% Justification for excessive over-representation: None. Tellingly, Mersing which has approximately twice the landmass than Pagoh has more voters than any of these. Ratio of Largest Constituency to Smallest Constituency: 3.08: 1 Changes in Malapportionment: Malapportionment is not mitigated by the redelineation proposal even though some victims of malapportionment have changed.

However, peat fires here have been found to be a major source of smoke that 17 travels across national boundaries creating regional haze. Despite these regulations, more 18 than a quarter of all Indonesian oil palm plantations are on peat. This paper argues that 19 patronage networks within the Indonesian oil palm sector have been a major factor in the 20 unsustainable use of peatlands there. Rampant patronage politics have made it easy for well- 21 connected companies to skirt regulations to obtain licenses for these lands. Decentralization 22 has further encouraged this practice at the regional level, as regional elites are eager to reap 23 the benefits of local investments. In addition, clients are able to exert their influence over 24 state decision-making to ensure that any changes to the licensing process does not jeopardize 25 their access to these lands.

  • Hematite Mineralization at Bukit Lop, Chaah, Johor
210 Hematite mineralization at Bukit Lop. Chaah. Johor YUSRI ZAKARIAH & MOHD SHAFEEA LEMAN Jabatan Geologi, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia Several iron and barite mines were reported by Bean (1969) to have' operated in northwest Johor, including the Sri Medan, Bukit Lop, Bukit Kepong and Bukit Tui mines. In 1986, the Bukit Lop iron mine was reopened by the Matahari Mining Sdn. Bhd. The mine which is located on the southeastern spur of Bukit Lop ridge, about 10 km southwest of Chaah Town exposed some details about the geology of the mineralization discussed in this paper. The main iron ore deposit occurs both as primary and secondary deposits. The primary mineralization occurred in a massive unit of andesitic volcanic unit of the Upper Mesozoic continental deposit known as the Ma'Okil Formation (Loganathan, 1978). The maximum thickness of the ore bodies reaches up to 20 m thick with concordant as well as discordant nature of displacement. From the first (old) adit, the main ore body is discordant to the general strike of the host rock (Bean, 1969; Zakaria Hussain, 1994) while from the second (new) adit the main ore body is concordant to the strike of the host rock. The secondary iron ore deposit occurred as basal conglomerate of the conglomerate unit overlying the andesite. Mohd Shafeea Leman & Yusri Zakariah (in press) considered that these iron conglomerate beds represent a series of alluvial fans deposited along a faulted andesitic volcanic rocks. The main ore deposit comprise of hematite with traces of magnetite (Bean, 1969). Minor baryte occurrences were also reported from this locality (Bean, 1969; Zakaria Hussain, 1994).

  • The Balingian Shear Zone and West Baram Line, Sarawak and Their Importance in the Early Cenozoic Evolution of Nw Borneo Robert B
217 THE BALINGIAN SHEAR ZONE AND WEST BARAM LINE, SARAWAK AND THEIR IMPORTANCE IN THE EARLY CENOZOIC EVOLUTION OF NW BORNEO ROBERT B. TATE Department of Geology, University of Malaya, 59100 Kuala Lumpur Intense shearing of the rocks at the Sibu-Bintulu road bridge site on the Sg. Balingian was recognised first in 1976 and the shaaring then attributed to a NE-trending tectonic feature related to the Mulu Shear Zone (McManus & Tate, 1976). New roadside exposures in the middle-upper Eocene Belaga Formation in the neighbourhood of Sg. Balingian between Sibu and Bintulu now reveal a major zone of deformation which seems to trend approximately WNW. The zone appears to continue offshore where it is aligned with a positive gravity anomaly trending WNW (Hutchison,1991) indicating a major discontinuity at depth. The gravity anomaly coincides with the SW margin of the Balingian oil Province which has been described by Swinburn (1993) as the West Balingian Line. The Balingian Shear zone is characterised by intensely folded turbidites belonging to the upper part of the Belaga Formation. Cleavage, quartz-filled jointing and ptygmatic folds, boudinage and small-scale thrusting are common within a belt about 5 km wide. Structural measurements obtained from the Balingian exposures indicate a general N -S compressional direction but more data are needed from a wider area before either the structural interpretation or lateral extent and direction of the shear zone, including whether there is any horizontal component, can be established satisfactorily. The timing of the deformation cannot be verified except that it is post upper Eocene.
