  • An Introduction to Catholicism
This page intentionally left blank AN INTRODUCTION TO CATHOLICISM The Vatican. The Inquisition. Contraception. Celibacy. Apparitions and miracles. Plots and scandals. The Catholic Church is seldom out of the news. But what do its one billion adherents really believe, and how do they put their beliefs into practice in worship, in the family, and in society? This down-to-earth account goes back to the early Christian creeds to uncover the roots of modern Catholic thinking. It avoids getting bogged down in theological technicalities and throws light on aspects of the Church’s institutional structure and liturgical practice that even Catholics can find baffling: Why go to confession? How are people made saints? What is “infallible” about the pope? Topics addressed include: scripture and tradition; sacraments and prayer; popular piety; personal and social morality; reform, mission, and interreligious dialogue. Lawrence Cunningham, a theologian, prize-winning writer, and university teacher, provides an overview of Catholicism today which will be indispensable for undergraduates and lay study groups. lawrence s. cunningham is John A. • Sanctus Sanctorum Exultatio Master's Thesis Presented
Variety within Unity: Sanctus sanctorum exultatio Master’s Thesis Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Master of Arts in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Peter Moeller Graduate Program in Music The Ohio State University Thesis Committee Dr. Danielle Fosler-Lussier, Advisor Dr. Charles Atkinson Dr. Leslie Lockett ii Copyright by Peter Moeller 2018 iii Abstract When the Frankish King Pepin III declared, in the wake of the visit by Pope Stephen II and his retinue (752-57), that henceforth the churches in Francia would follow the Roman rite in the celebration of the liturgy, he began a process that would have far-reaching consequences for both the liturgy and its music. The chants of the Roman rite quickly came to be represented as divinely inspired—their melodies having been sung directly into the ear of Gregory the Great by the Holy Spirit in the form of a dove—and their textual and melodic ductus unalterable. Frankish singers, however, responded creatively to the imposition of the Roman liturgy and its music. While they could not alter the texts and melodies of the standard items of the mass and office, they could add newly composed texts and melodies to them. The result was the phenomenon often referred to as "troping," a term that covers a diverse array of practices ranging from adding melismas to the phrases of an Introit, adding texts to preexistent melismas, or composing completely new texts with music that could introduce and embellish almost any chant of the Mass or Office—the last-named being the "classic trope," as Bruno Stäblein called it.

Convinced Christians, in order to sacrifice themselves to God, became monks. In Italy and other remote places or at important traffic roads, building of monasteries for religious, educating and social needs was started, services and schools were organized, accommodation for travellers provided. Without applying concrete, a homogeneous planning monumental monastery churches with massive walls, restrained décor, wooden ceilings, semi cylindrical ridge or altarpiece (Latin: presbyterium) at the building eastern end were built. In churches, rooms with small windows were dark and enigmatic. Due to the impact of relics, the dead and martyrs’ commemoration cult and ideology, basilicas had more extended planning: at the nave’s eastern end a podium for the altar was made. In walls a semicircle planning chancel’s niche or apse and windows were built. In order to organize ritual processions, chapels for extra altars arranged in the cross-nave or transept. The entrance into the apse joined both side-naves and surrounded by the chancel. The building’s plan obtained a shape of a Latin cross. Symbolism was not the determinant factor, but rather the functionality of room. The transept, which earlier had been considered as underlying, became more important than the nave, which since the 5th century searches for fireproof cover formation and new planning and vault solutions were necessary.

  • Abbey Library of Saint Gall This Is Not Only One of the Oldest Collections in Europe, but Also Possibly the Most Beautiful
Abbey Library of Saint Gall This is not only one of the oldest collections in Europe, but also possibly the most beautiful. Add to list Abbey Library of Saint Gall CHIPPEE ON WIKIPEDIA 4,720 There are beautiful old libraries and then there is the Abbey Library of Saint Gall, which may not only be one of the oldest surviving libraries in Europe but certainly one of the most beautiful. According to the Abbey of Saint Gall’s website (Abtei St. Gallen in German), the earliest evidence of a library collection on the site dates back to around 820 CE, in plans that show a library attached to the main church. The Abbey is said to have followed the Rule of St. Benedict, a portion of which prescribes the study of literature, should a library available, so it is no wonder that the abbey itself would have been built with one. As the abbey grew over the years, so did its library, and soon the site became known for its collection of illuminated manuscripts and writings, as well as a leading center for science and Western culture around the 10th century. In the mid-18th century, the world-renowned collection was moved to a new library space which was lavishly decorated in a Baroque rococo style. Elaborate artworks were installed in the ceiling which were framed by flowing, curved moldings, giving the space a timeless and fantastical aspect. The wooden balconies are shaped into flowering shapes and designs. Oh, and also the books the historic collection was also on display if you could look past the surroundings to pay attention to them.

  • The Solesmes Chant Tradition
Sacred Music Volume 139, Number 3 Fall 2012 ARTICLES ! e Solesmes Chant Tradition: ! e Original Neumatic Signs and Practical Performance Today By Charles Cole E!"#$ S%#&'(&' he real starting point for any study of the Gregorian Chant of Solesmes is the refoundation of Solesmes itself. Originally founded in 1010 by the Benedictine Abbey at Le Mans, the community was dissolved during the French Revolution. It was a local priest, Dom Prosper Guéranger, who instigated the return of monks to the site and became the new Abbot of Solesmes. He was responsible for the Trefounding of the French Benedictine tradition which had all but disappeared. He sought an ideal, an almost romanticized version of Benedictine monasticism, and he knew the importance of the restoration of the chant and its pride of place at the heart of the liturgy. Right from the start in 1833 his intentions were very clear and he instilled in the founding precepts of Solesmes an absolute respect for the primacy of the chants. In 1856 he engaged a number of monks in the study of manuscripts and the work of Solesmes began, leading to the main Solesmes Editions, as shown in Table 1. 1883 Graduale 1889 Paleographie Musicale (1st Volume) 1891 Antiphonale 1908 Graduale (Vatican Edition) 1912 Antiphonale Romanum 1934 Antiphonale Monasticum 1974 Graduale Romanum () e Vatican Edition rearranged according to the Vatican II Calendar) 1979 Graduale Triplex (Graduale Romanum with neumatic signs added) 1983 Liber Hymnarius 2005–2007 Antiphonale Monasticum 2009 Antiphonale Romanum Table 1: Important Publications from Solesmes, 1883–2009 Musical extracts © Abbaye Saint-Pierre, Solesmes reproduced by kind permission of ) e Abbot and Community of Solesmes.

  • Press Release a Monastery, a Library, a World Heritage Site. St. Gallen
Press release A monastery, a library, a World Heritage Site. St. Gallen – since 612! When the Irish wandering monk Gallus and his deacon Hiltibod built the first cell above the shores of Lake Constance in 612, they could not have imagined that centuries later a monastery would arise and become the spiritual centre of the Occident in the Middle Ages. After the foundation of the Abbey of Saint Gall, the first abbot Otmar laid the foundation for its rise to one of the most im- portant monasteries of its time. Today, the UNESCO World Heritage Site Abbey District of Saint Gall delights visitors with its baroque architecture, the third oldest library in the world and the oldest monastic plans. ST. GALLEN – SINCE 612 In the year of our Lord 612, the Irish wandering monk Gallus came to Lake Constance as a compan- ion of Abbot Columban, from where he and his companions went their separate ways. Together with his deacon Hiltibold, he set off along the Steinach river to the present site of the city of St. Gallen. Legend has it that a fateful encounter with a bear caused Gallus to stay. Thus he founded the first cell in 612 and has since been considered the founding father of the city of St. Gallen. The spiritual centre of Europe In 719, a century later, the Gallus settlement was revived by Otmar. This gave rise to the Abbey of Saint Gall, which, with its imposing, double-towered cathedral, became an important spiritual cen- tre in Europe. It was a haven of culture and a place of great radiance.

  • Saint Colombanus, a European Saint Biography of the Irish Monk and Missionary Who Founded Bobbio Abbey
SHEETS Saint Colombanus, a European saint Biography of the Irish monk and missionary who founded Bobbio Abbey Talk by Pope Benedict XVI (GENERAL AUDIENCE 11 JUNE 2008, ROME) Saint Colombanus the abbot is the best-known Irishman of the early Middle Ages. Since he worked as a monk, missionary and writer in various counties of Western Europe, with good reason he can be called a "European" saint. With the Irish of his time, he had a sense of Europe's cultural unity. The expression «totius Europae», of all Europe, with reference to the Church’s presence on the Continent, is found for the first time in one of his letters, written around the year 600, addressed to Pope Gregory the Great (cf. Epistula I,1). Colombanus was born around the year 543 in the province of Leinster, in south-east Ireland. He was educated at home by excellent tutors who introduced him to the study of liberal arts. He later went to study with the Abbott Sinell of the community of Cluain-Inis, in the north of Ireland, to increase his knowledge of the Holy Scriptures. At about twenty years of age he entered the monastery of Bangor, in the north-east of the island, under the Abbott Comgall, a monk well known for his virtue and ascetic rigour. In full agreement with his abbot, Colombanus zealously practised the severe discipline of the monastery, leading a life of prayer, asceticism and study. While there, he was also ordained a priest. His life at Bangor and the abbot's example influenced the conception of monasticism that Colombanus developed over time, and then spread during his lifetime.
