Art-Related Activity NATALIA KRAEVSKAIA Curriculum Vitae Born in 1952 in Astrakhan, Russia (former USSR). 1974 – graduated from Leningrad State University, faculty of philology. 1981 - Ph.D. in philology. Pushkin Institute of Russian Language, Moscow. More than 50 articles and books’ chapters on the theory of Russian oral speech, communication in science and methods of teaching Russian language to foreigners. Till 1990 worked as the associate professor at the Technical University, Astrakhan, Russia. 1983-1985 and 1990-1991 worked at the department of Pushkin Institute of Russian language in Hanoi under the ministry of the education of the USSR. Current position – associate professor of the International faculty of Hanoi State University and of The Russian State University for the Humanities, Moscow (Institute of Oriental and Classical Studies). Art-related activity In 1990 opened the first private gallery in Hanoi, Vietnam. The gallery called Salon Natasha is specialized in contemporary art. From 1990 to 2005 organised in the Salon about 50 solo and group art exhibitions of Vietnamese and international artists, non-profit workshops and art happenings. In 2005 has stopped the gallery activity. Curator of the exhibitions and art projects in Vietnam and abroad: 1. “Composition: movement et immobilite” – an exhibition of contemporary Vietnamese art. French Cultural Center ( Alliance Francaise), Hanoi, Vietnam, 1995 (catalogue). 2. Contemporary Vietnamese art at the International Asian Art Exhibition, Macao, 1997. 3. “Looking In” – a project and an exhibition of the international artists whose works are related to Vietnam, Hanoi, 1997. 4. “Crosscurrents” (co-curator with Bonney Bombach) - a project of collaboration by post of Vietnamese and Australian artists with the exhibition at the Australian Embassy in Hanoi, 1998. The project has got the grant from the Australian Council for touring exhibition in Australia, 1998- 2000, 10 venues (catalogue). 5. “ Spirit of Hanoi. Contemporary art from Vietnam. Salon Natasha as an installation”. (Co-curator with Maritta Nurmi) – a project and 2 exhibitions: in Art Association of Oulu and BAU-gallery, Helsinki, Finland, 1998, (catalogue). The project was sponsored by the Ministry for Foreign Affairs of Finland. 6. “ Human – Nature” – exhibition of three young artists at the Gallery of Hanoi Fine Arts Institute, 2000. 1 7. D. Cornell University 2015 This thesis examines the development of contemporary art in Vietnam and Cambodia by introducing new ways of visually analyzing the city as a site of experience and field of representation. As part of a micro-region loosely referred to as “the Mekong,” named for the river that runs through it, Ho Chi Minh City and Phnom Penh share an intimate geography despite the contentious history their respective nations of Vietnam and Cambodia have experienced for centuries. Pivotal experiences shaping the present in both cities include their colonial pasts as part of French Indochina, postcolonial “golden ages” of independence, and deep imbrication in the wars of the 1960s-70s and traumatic aftermaths including societal upheaval and genocide. New forms of artistic practice and subjectivity began to emerge in the 1990s and became especially pronounced in the first decade of the new millennium, as market-oriented economic reforms in Vietnam and procedures of democratization in Cambodia indexed new relationships to neoliberalism and globalization. While these parallel events guide the comparison of the present, the larger argument is framed by a rigorous engagement with the politics of place and possibilities of built space.
