VI. FY17 Priority Initiatives Penrose explained that there are two priority initiatives that are bridging together many elements of the UVM Foundation. The UVM Foundation Board has established a Foundation Fellows program that provides board educational opportunities for recent graduates. The Fellows have been working with John Evans in the area of career connection programs and with Stew Jensen and Meg McGovern in the area of mobilizing Vermont alumni. Both board leaders and several of the current Fellows gave project updates. Materials about work of the Fellows can be found in our board packet beginning on page 15. A. Hire/Connect A Catamount Program Brian Sozansky and Germain Mopa introduced themselves and talked about their findings o UVM has excellent career content and programs but that the students’ knowledge and utilization of them are limited. o Currently one main avenue for communication is through emails, but with the volume of student emails, they may get overlooked. Their main challenge is to find modern tools and techniques to get the word out. o Next steps include; . Take inventory of the programs and marketing/communication plan. . Look at existing programs (Grossman School of Business/College of Arts & Sciences) and identify weaknesses and strengths. Leverage this model to come up with a plan . Create recommendations for the next meeting of how to increase engagement with students and alumni.

o John Evans talked about the limited student engagement, citing the career networking events and the job shadow experiences. B. Mobilize Vermont Alumni Molly Kelly-Yahner introduced herself and talked about the group’s findings. o Molly thanked Stew Jensen, Meg McGovern, Mary Schliecker-Brigham and the VT Regional Board for the help with this project. o The objective of this group is to get the young VT alums, referred to as the GOLD alums, to engage in UVM activities. o Initially they wanted to plan activities at the Alumni House, but would need to guess what this group’s interests, passions and reasons for returning to campus are. Instead they decided to create a survey to find out what inspires them to come back. o Stew Jensen felt that it was really important to plan engagement opportunities based on data that shows what make the millennials excited. o Next steps include; . Survey young alums . Pull data from VT alums . Plan events C. Alan shared that the Alumni Association would be looking to undertake a broad alumni survey in the Fall of 2017. He suggested that the committees and regional boards think about what questions they may want to see included. A formal work group will be established in the Spring of 2016 to move this effort forward.

VII. AABOD Subcommittee Highlights and Discussion A. UVM Board of Trustees subcommittees (Afi Ahmadi and Myron Sopher) They had nothing to report about their respective UVM Board of Trustees subcommittees because they haven’t met since their last report. B. Student Alumni Association: (Renee Cruise and Katherine Fischer) They are excited to engage students and connect them with alumni. The new space at the Alumni House will help make this easier. They talked about the new role of the Student Alumni Association as the Welcome Desk Staff a few hours a week. This was a focus of their most recent retreat that went really well. Stew Jensen added that this group might be a good group for the Foundation Fellows to work with. C. Admissions: (Rosario Arias) Some of the upcoming initiatives are the Legacy Admissions Reception in the spring and the Legacy Family Program with giveaways, personalized communication and the waiving of application fees. D. Affinity: (Rosario Arias for Joseph Thomas) These continue to be strong engagement programs, with two groups returning to Alumni Weekend (Experimental Program and Delta Psi). The Experimental Program has a wonderful article about it and has had some nice posts on the Alumni Facebook page. The Delta Psi event on Saturday is very popular with about 260 people registered. A possible affinity group for the future might be the Boulder Society. E. Athletics: (Cathy Tremblay) Cathy mentioned that there will be a series of 30 second alumni highlights at the games. So far they have been well received. Scott Baldwin was one of the ones recognized last year.

F. Awards: (Afi Ahmadi) The Celebrating Excellence Event scheduled for Saturday will recognize Matt Mues ’08- Outstanding Young Alumni Award, Sam Bain ’68 and Ted Madden ’92- Distinguished Service Award, Rich and Deb Tarrant- Lifetime Achievement in Philanthropy Award and David Blittersdorf ’81- Alumni Achievement Award. Afi had high praise for Sarah Lenes and the video presentations that she helped gather. G. Career Services: (John Evans) The Job Shadow Program in year 2 had a 27% increase in participation. This year we are looking for employers to expand the opportunities. The board offered some thoughts: make it more flexible, offer the chance to facilitate a job shadow with a colleague or friend, accept two students, meet offsite for a coffee for a shorter visit, weave in life skills or information about interviewing, meet with students earlier in their UVM career, expand the mentor program. Some of these ideas can be expanded upon by the Foundation Fellows in their Connect-A-Catamount Program. John challenged each board member to link with a student or recent graduate. H. Diversity and Equity: (Khalil Munir) A successful event this summer was held at the DC Nationals Game. Some upcoming events include the ALANA Networking Event held after the meeting, the Soul Food Social event on Saturday night where the students make the meal for the attendees and the DC holiday party. Khalil would really like to see if this committee can align with the other committees to expand their reach and appeal to a larger group. A dialogue ensued about the ROTC program and the positive, long reaching benefits of reaching out to the group for personalized events. Bud Ockert shared about events he has hosted at his home and the lifetime of friendships that were a result. I. Member Services: (Scott Baldwin) Recently an event was hosted at the Alumni House for alumni living in a one-mile radius; resulting in about 8 lifetime memberships. The next focus will be to expand the offerings locally and in other regions of the country. Although the GO Vermont program has been modified, we have been given permission to use the membership cards with the former logo on the back. J. Travel Program: (Linda Sparks) There has been some interest in the Discovery Travel Program with the Panama/Costa Rica trip in late January and the Belgium/Holland trip in late April. A third trip is being planned for Dordogne France in October of 2017. K. DC Regional Board: (Bill Bright) Next week is the board meeting and the unveiling of the UVM Seal at the DC Club. L. Regional Board: (Kate Ullucci) The Business Breakfast with Mark Lev in October should be popular, and alumni have begun to register. M. New York Regional Board: (Elizabeth Marvin) Less than a month ago the NY Board hosted an exciting alumni event at the US Open. Upcoming events and activities include the board meeting at the Penn Club and the Holiday Party, also at the Penn Club. N. San Francisco Regional Board: (Jeff McNulty) This is Jeff’s last year, but the co-chairs of Keith Upton-Weber and Kate Manciocchi, are prepared to take his place. In September the board hosted a wonderful event at the SFMOMA, which included a guided tour. Upcoming events include an Octoberfest and a Holiday Party. O. Vermont Regional Board: (Stew Jensen) The next few months will be busy in Vermont with the Chittenden County Hockey Game, the Holiday Party at the Alumni House, and an expanded list of Ski & Ride locations (Cochran’s, Jay Peak, Stowe and Sugarbush). The southern Vermont Ski & Ride will be hosted by the New York Regional Board.

VIII. Wrap Up & Adjourn (Penrose Jackson) A. Penrose reviewed the upcoming meeting schedule: o Wednesday, March 1, 2017 2:00 p.m. (call) o Friday, May 19, 2017 12:00 noon (campus) o Friday, October 6, 2017 12:00 noon (campus) B. Penrose asked if there was anyone from the public who would like to address the board and there was not. C. Afi Ahmadi asked to have the minutes reflect the appreciation for the following people who helped to make the opening of the Alumni House possible. These were included in the remarks that Penrose Jackson made at the house dedication on Thursday, September 22, 2016. Past Alumni Association presidents like Tom Amidon, Katherine Allen and Rollie Allen, all from the Class of 1961; Dale Rocheleau, Class of 1980; Frank Cioffi, Class of 1977; Janet Terp, Class of 1980; Meg Guzewicz, Class of 1973; Ted Madden, Class of 1992; and Kristina Pisanelli, Class of 1997 — as well as hundreds of volunteer leaders of our Regional Alumni Boards and committees. D. Although the formal fundraising campaign for the Alumni House has ended, more support is welcomed and there are still projects on the wish list. E. Alan Ryea mentioned that although the focus of the Alumni Weekend has changed with a smaller group of milestone reunions, the interest and registrant count is higher than the last three years and we have surpassed our revenue goals.

There being no further business, Board Chair Penrose Jackson adjourned the meeting at 4:39 p.m.
