Turn Striving Readers Into Achievers 2019–2020 MIDDLE TURN STRIVING READERS READER & INTO ACHIEVERS YOUNG ADULT ENHANCE YOUR READING PROGRAM CATALOG WITH LARGE PRINT WHAT’S INSIDE? LEARN HOW LARGE PRINT SUPPORTS LITERACY SEE HOW SUBTLE DIFFERENCES LEAD TO BIG ADVANTAGES FIND OUT WHICH TITLES MADE YOUR PEERS’ TOP PICKS DISCOVER HOW LARGE PRINT CAN ENCOURAGE STRIVING READERS When reading feels like a laborious process, young readers can become disengaged and discouraged. Make it less so with large print. At Thorndike Press®, we look for standout middle grade and young adult debuts, along with award-winning, tried-and-true classics. Among a collection of nearly 400 large print books and counting, we strive to achieve a mix of high-interest, popular titles available for self-selected reading, and titles that already have content or curriculum built around them. Large print provides striving readers with options. To avoid the stigma that can sometimes be associated with large print, the books have the same artwork on the cover as the standard print edition and are not labeled as “large print” on the cover. Many titles focus on diversity—recognizing the fact that young readers want to identify culturally with what they are reading. The bottom line is that striving readers want to read what their peers are reading. Why not augment your current print reading program by offering at least 10% of your collection in multiple formats? You can introduce young readers to the concept of large print with a multiformat display or read-aloud session. Explore this catalog to see all Thorndike Press has to offer. If we want for all students to be successful, life-long readers, we must Build consider this type of book in our collections.” Confidence —Becky Calzada Library Services Coordinator, Leander ISD, TX For sources, see page 33. 3 MIDDLE READER TITLES IN LARGE PRINT LARGE PRINT CAN HELP DEVELOP READING SKILLS When middle grade students aren’t reading at a proficient level, large print can help. While the outside of a large print book looks like its standard print counterpart, the inside is designed to increase readability. The combination of a larger font and increased white space on a page helps readers: Decode words. With fewer words per page, large print books make the process of visualizing information easier for striving readers. They can sound out the words more effectively. Improve tracking and fluency. Larger fonts and increased spacing force the eye to move more slowly to help a reader avoid skipping or rereading lines. Develop greater reading comprehension. Once decoding errors are eliminated and fluency improves, striving readers can focus on the meaning of the text more readily. As a 4th and 5th grade teacher, I strive to provide my students with engaging books that have well-developed, dynamic characters and unique plots that keep them wanting to read more. While students read these books in partnerships, I have them record their discussions about the book and post their videos to YouTube. 5.0-6.0 The Lost Gate Card, Orson Scott 5.8 Danny North knew from early childhood that his family was different, and that he was different from them. While his cousins were learning how to create the things that commoners called fairies, ghosts, golems, trolls, werewolves, and other such miracles that were the heritage of the North family, Danny worried that he would never show a talent, never form an outself. He grew up in the rambling old house, filled with dozens of cousins, and aunts and uncles, all ruled by his father. Their home was isolated in the mountains of western Virginia, far from town, far from schools, far from other people. There are many secrets in the House, and many rules that Danny must follow. There is a secret library with only a few dozen books, and none of them in English — but Danny and his cousins are expected to become fluent in the language of the books. While Danny's cousins are free to create magic whenever they like, they must never do it where outsiders might see. Unfortunately, there are some secrets kept from Danny as well. And that will lead to disaster for the North family. The Gate Thief Card, Orson Scott 5.3 In this sequel to The Lost Gate, bestselling author Orson Scott Card continues his fantastic tale of the Mages of Westil who live in exile on Earth in The Gate Thief, a novel of the Mither Mages. Here on Earth, Danny North is still in high school, yet he holds in his heart and mind all the stolen outselves of thirteen centuries of gatemages.

WRA SUMMER READING PROGRAM 2018 Western Reserve Academy Leisure Summer Reading 2018 Most members of the Reserve community find pleasure in reading. For those of us tied to the academic calendar, summers and holidays give us what we need most—time. With that in mind, we offer students this list of recommended books for summer reading. This list is intended for student LEISURE reading. We hope the variety piques student interest and provides the opportunity to expand horizons, satisfy curiosity, and/or offer an enjoyable escape. Titles include: “classics” to recently published titles, relatively easy to challenging reading levels, and a variety of genres covering diverse subjects. Also included is a list of recommended websites to locate further suggestions for award-winning books and titles of interest. This list is updated annually by members of the John D. Ong library staff. Titles are recommended by members of the WRA community or by respected review sources including the Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA), a division of the American Library Association. A few titles have frank passages that mirror some aspects of life explicitly. Therefore, we urge parents to explore the titles your teenagers choose and discuss the book as well as the choice with them. All the books on this list should be available in libraries and/or bookstores. The Ong Library will also arrange for a special “summer checkout” for anyone interested. Just ask at the library front desk. Enjoy your summer and your free time, and try to spend some of it reading! Your feedback about any title on this list is welcome—and we also welcome your recommendations for titles to add in the future.

  • The Real Heroine of Fairy Tales Donna
Donna Lee Fields 264 Rhymes with ‘Bitch’: The Real Heroine of Fairy Tales Donna Lee Fields (Universitat International Valenciana) Profiling. Usually associated with criminal or racial profiling. Police detaining suspects on the basis of skin color, race, dress, or apparently suspicious actions. Stored in their minds from repetitive briefings, they have specific images and a list of characteristics that direct them towards singling out probable provocateurs, people they are paid and sworn to get off the street. But what seems, at first, like a reasonable missive can quickly become macabre. Our minds flit to the only some of the repercussions this profiling has caused, such as the thousands of citizens of Japanese descent singled out and imprisoned for years in concentration camps in the United States during World War II, the treatment of the French police toward Algerian immigrants in the 1960s; the photos of Steve Biko and Rodney King after being brutalized by police; the daily battle between the British and the Irish, and of course, any man of Middle Eastern descent in this day and age, who needs to think twice about entering most public buildings. Profiling is, in fact, another way of saying “prejudice”, though connotation is everything in this age of “military action” versus “war”, and “permissible force” rather than “physical abuse”. We are all guilty of profiling and much more than we may want to admit. We judge people on the basis of their title, their clothes, their skin color, their professions. And though many of us will be fortunate enough never to be on the wrong side of its violent consequences, we are programmed and influenced by its long-reaching tentacles, though we be conscious of it or not.
