Image and Survival in Ernesto De Martino’s interdisciplinary ethnography1 Abstract By focusing on part of the iconographic production of Italian anthropologist Ernesto De Martino in the 1950s, this article proposes to sketch his objects of study through an insistence on their historiographical value. Within this context, the crises of possession triggered by the Arachnida bites function as so-called “folkloric-religious relics” of Tarantism, and thus come to be considered by the anthropologist as “surviving documents” of a tension between memory and oblivion. Not only does this open the door to a discussion on the relation between the archive and the discipline of anthropology, but also of the archival logistics behind various forms of pathos (close to Aby Warburg’s notion of Pathosformel). These can be traced through the study of key elements of ritualistic mediation. I Sud: il complesso di Proteo 1 Ha scritto Raffaele La Capria, a proposito di un impietoso ritratto dei collaboratori di “Sud” (una rivista pubblicata a Napoli negli anni dell’immediato dopoguerra), fatto da Anna Maria Ortese in Il mare non bagna Napoli: “… in questo capitolo Il silenzio della ragione è come sottinteso una specie di processo kafkiano (nei confronti di tutti i suoi amici di “Sud”), dove la colpa è anch’essa kafkiana, perché irreparabile, perché totale, perché masochistica- mente riconosciuta perfino dai presunti colpevoli. Di questa colpa, insomma, sono tutti con- vinti, e questo forse spiega perché l’inconsueto abuso dell’altrui privatezza compiuto dalla Or- tese ne Il mare sia stato lasciato passare con tanta disinvoltura, da noi suoi amici imputati di “silenzio della ragione”, e da tutti i vari critici, uomini di cultura, lettori, che giustamente am- mirano questo libro. (… ...) E mi domando cosa sarebbe accaduto se, mettiamo, l’abuso com- messo nei confronti di Compagnone e di Rea fosse stato commesso nei confronti di Vittorini e di Pavese. Non si sarebbe discusso della cosa? O si sarebbe fatto finta di niente? Io credo che tutti gli addetti ai lavori sarebbero insorti e avrebbero toccato, chi più chi meno, questo punto. Ma ne Il mare l’abuso colpiva due scrittori napoletani già pregiudizialmente destinati nell’o- pinione dell’establishment letterario ad essere per lo meno ‘caratteristici’. E che aveva fatto la Ortese? Aveva solo resa più spietata e letterariamente più pregevole la caratterizzazione.”2 Dietro l’atteggiamento dell’establishment letterario, sotto l’indifferenza con cui era stato accolto un modo di procedere almeno insolito nei confronti di alcuni scrittori (e che per altri scrittori non sarebbe stato accettato), v’era, dunque, un pregiudizio. -

Cultures and Contexts: Modern Italy NYU Core Curriculum, Fall 2013 Prof. Merjian, Tues/Thurs 11-12:15 This course examines the culture of modern Italy: a nation younger than the United States, yet steeped in all manner of millennial traditions, linguistic dialects, and regional artistic and economic customs. “We have made Italy; we must now make Italians.” Thus declared the politician and writer Massimo d’Azeglio following the country’s belated unification in 1861. How has Italy attempted to “make Italians” over the last century? What forms of culture could unify a people so diverse in origins and aspirations? Has the country managed to transform itself from a “geographic idea” to a cultural reality? Aside from commonplaces – rolling hills, historical landmarks, beloved cuisine, fashion runways – what are the bel paese’s most salient cultural characteristics, and why do they matter? The course proceeds chronologically, and thus provides a basic overview of modern Italy’s historical and cultural trajectory: the optimism and disillusionment of the Giolitti period following national unification; the heady trial-by-fire of World War One and Futurist interventions; the revolutionary flowerings of Fascism and its hardening into an increasingly repressive regime; tensions between Fascist radicalism and reaction, autarchy and imperialism; the values of the Resistance and the realist aesthetic that formed their chief vehicle; the afterlife of Gramscian cultural theory; the cultural politics of the Cold War and the Economic Miracle; the lure of consumerism and Italy’s embattled anthropological “others”; the countercultural currents of the “long 1968” movements; the Years of Lead and dueling terrorisms; the Second Republic and Berlusconi’s Videocracy; the prospect of a multicultural Italy. -

1 Pasolini for the Future Alessia Ricciardi Although “the future” may represent an ever hazier notion in the cultural and political imagination, public figures in Italy lately have invoked the concept with increasing frequency. Since their rift with the governing coalition led by Silvio Berlusconi, the members of Gianfranco Fini’s right-wing party have taken to calling themselves “the Futurists” (i futuristi) and have established the “MakeFuture Foundation” (Fondazione Farefuturo) to propagate their ideological views. Berlusconi himself recently has declared the intention of renaming his own party from “Let’s Go, Italy” (Forza Italia) to the more progressive-sounding “Forward, Italy” (Avanti Italia). At the same time, it appears that loss of hope regarding the future has become integral to our sense of our own late modernity in the field of critical thought. Among only the most current examples, the French anthropologist Marc Augé has announced that he is about to publish a book with the telling title Where Did the Future Go? (Ou est passé l’avenir?).2 The Italian strain of the attitude may be traced back at least to Giacomo Leopardi, who in the nineteenth century identified the narrowing down of life to the present tense as one of Italy’s most problematic tendencies, a trait that led him to characterize the nation as “without the prospect of a better sort of future, without occupation, without purpose.”3 Reflecting from the vantage point of the early twentieth century on Italy’s responsiveness to the weight of its long history from classical Rome to the present, Antonio Gramsci contended that among his compatriots the future always is passively expected “as it seems to be determined by the past” (2005, 201). -

She published an article titled “Lamento, ordine, e subalternità in Salvatore Giuliano,” in the Californian Italian Studies Journal. In this article, she discusses the political implications of representations of death and mourning rituals in Francesco Rosi’s Salvatore Giuliano. In 2009 she was nominated for the Presidential Award for Excellence in Teaching at Brown. Her pedagogical training includes a graduate seminar on teaching methodologies, graduate student seminars and four certificate programs through the Sheridan Center for Teaching and Learning in Higher Education at Brown University. -
