Nutrition Journal (2015) 14:109 DOI 10.1186/s12937-015-0067-3 REVIEW Open Access IgY antibodies in human nutrition for disease prevention Sandra Müller1, Andreas Schubert1, Julia Zajac1, Terry Dyck2 and Christopher Oelkrug1,3* Abstract Oral administration of preformed specific antibodies is an attractive approach against infections of the digestive system in humans and animals in times of increasing antibiotic resistances. Previous studies showed a positive effect of egg yolk IgY antibodies on bacterial intoxications in animals and humans. Immunization of chickens with specific antigens offers the possibility to create various forms of antibodies. Research shows that orally applied IgY’s isolated from egg yolks can passively cure or prevent diseases of the digestive system. The use of these alternative therapeutic drugs provides further advantages: (1) The production of IgY’s is a non-invasive alternative to current methods; (2) The keeping of chickens is inexpensive; (3) The animals are easy to handle; (4) It avoids repetitive bleeding of laboratory animals; (5) It is also very cost effective regarding the high IgY concentration within the egg yolk. Novel targets of these antigen specific antibodies are Helicobacter pylori and also molecules involved in signaling pathways in gastric cancer. Furthermore, also dental caries causing bacteria like Streptococcus mutans or opportunistic Pseudomonas aeruginosa in cystic fibrosis patients are possible targets. Therefore, IgY’s included in food for human consumption may be able to prevent or cure human diseases. We have previously demonstrated a Organophosphates major inflammatory response with subsequent brain damage which was correlated with the duration of the fl Anti-in ammatory sarin-induced seizures (Chapman et al., 2006). In the present work seizures were induced by the nerve agent Prostaglandins sarin (1.2 LD50) insufficiently treated 1 min later by atropine and trimedoxime bromide (TA), with additional Convulsions midazolam treatment either 5 or 30 min after continuous seizure activity. The efficacy of both steroidal and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), as well as other drugs that were reported as beneficial in neuroprotection, were evaluated for their contribution as adjunct treatment against sarin induced seizures and the ensuing inflammatory brain damage. Results show that both steroids and NSAIDs were harmful when ad- ministered during convulsions, and steroids were at best ineffective if administered at their termination. However, if administered at termination of convulsions, the NSAID ibuprofen, the selective COX 2 inhibitor nimesulide and the PLA2 inhibitor quinacrine were partially effective in reducing brain inflammatory markers. Administration of exogenous analogs of prostaglandins (PGE2) immediately following sarin-induced convulsions was found to have a beneficial effect in reducing brain inflammatory markers measured at 24 h and one week post sarin exposure.

More than 60 different gene mutations are causing this disease. The PRX gene codes for Periaxin proteins that are expressed by Schwann cells and are necessary for the formation and maintenance of myelination of peripheral nerves. Dejerine-Sottas neuropathy and Charcot-Marie-Tooth type 4F (CMT4F) are the two different clinical phenotypes observed in association with PRX gene mutation. This article describes a case of an elderly male with a novel mutation involving the PRX gene. Charcot- Marie-Tooth (CMT) disease is a type of HMSN with an estimated prevalence of 1 in 2,500 [2]. CMT can follow autosomal recessive (ARCMT), X-linked recessive, and also an autosomal dominant pattern. CMT type 4 is a rapidly increasing ARCMT disease form in HMSN, although CMT type 1 and 2 still account for the most substantial proportion of the patient population [3]. CMT4F is a severe, demyelinating subtype of CMT type 4 and is characterized by childhood onset of slowly progressing weakness in the distal muscles associated with atrophy.

    The Intestinal Protozoa A. Introduction 1. The Phylum Protozoa is classified into four major subdivisions according to the methods of locomotion and reproduction. a. The amoebae (Superclass Sarcodina, Class Rhizopodea move by means of pseudopodia and reproduce exclusively by asexual binary division. b. The flagellates (Superclass Mastigophora, Class Zoomasitgophorea) typically move by long, whiplike flagella and reproduce by binary fission. c. The ciliates (Subphylum Ciliophora, Class Ciliata) are propelled by rows of cilia that beat with a synchronized wavelike motion. d. The sporozoans (Subphylum Sporozoa) lack specialized organelles of motility but have a unique type of life cycle, alternating between sexual and asexual reproductive cycles (alternation of generations). e. Number of species - there are about 45,000 protozoan species; around 8000 are parasitic, and around 25 species are important to humans. 2. Diagnosis - must learn to differentiate between the harmless and the medically important. This is most often based upon the morphology of respective organisms. 3. Transmission - mostly person-to-person, via fecal-oral route; fecally contaminated food or water important (organisms remain viable for around 30 days in cool moist environment with few bacteria; other means of transmission include sexual, insects, animals (zoonoses).
