In 1989, Pope John Paul II delivered an apostolic exhortation (a special document or letter) named Redemptoris Cus- tos (Guardian of the Redeemer) on the occasion of the centenary of Pope Leo XIII's encyclical dedicated to St. Joseph. In Redemptoris Custos, Pope John Paul II discusses the importance of Saint Jo- seph in the Holy Family, his role in the plan of redemption, and portrays the saint as a model of a loving father. At the end of the document, Pope John Paul II states that today we still have good reason to commend everyone to St. Joseph, and to ask for his intercession: "Most beloved father, dispel the evil of falsehood and sin...graciously assist us from heaven in our struggle with the powers of dark- ness...and just as once you saved the Child Jesus from mortal danger, so now de- fend God's holy Church from the snares of her enemies and from all adversity."

The fact that Mary was "betrothed" to word ever spoken by Joseph along that way. But Joseph was part of the very plan of God. This is the silence of Joseph has its own special eloquence, pointed out by Luke and especially by Matthew. for thanks to that silence we can understand the The words spoken to Joseph are very significant: truth of the Gospel's judgment that he was "a just "Do not fear to take Mary your wife, for that which man" (Mt 1:19). has been conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit" (Mt One must come to understand this truth, for it 1:20). Above all, the "just" man of Nazareth possesses special way the marriage bond which already the clear characteristics of a husband. Luke refers existed between Joseph and Mary. In her marriage took place in two stages: first, the legal, divine motherhood Mary had to continue to live as or true marriage was celebrated, and then, only "a virgin, the wife of her husband" (cf. Thus, before he lived Joseph not only heard the divine truth concerning with Mary, Joseph was already her "husband." his wife's indescribable vocation; he also heard Mary, however, preserved her deep desire to give once again the truth about his own vocation. One may well ask how "just" man, who, in the spirit of the noblest this desire of Mary's could be reconciled with a traditions of the Chosen People, loved the Virgin of Nazareth and was bound to her by a husband's nothing could be more sublime; yet because Mary love, was once again called by God to this love. was united to Joseph by the bond of marriage, there can be no doubt but that Joseph approached "Joseph did as the angel of the Lord commanded as no other person ever could that eminent dignity him; he took his wife" into his home (Mt 1:24); whereby the Mother of God towers above all what was conceived in Mary was "of the Holy creatures. Since marriage is the highest degree of Spirit." From expressions such as these are we not association and friendship involving by its very to suppose that his love as a man was also given nature a communion of goods, it follows that God, new birth by the Holy Spirit? Are we not to think by giving Joseph to the Virgin, did not give him to that the love of God which has been poured forth her only as a companion for life, a witness of her into the human heart through the Holy Spirit (cf. virginity and protector of her honor: he also gave Rm 5:5) molds every human love to perfection? The Church deeply venerates this Family, and proposes it as the model of all "Joseph. . .took his wife; but he knew her not, until families. The special mystery. And in this mystery, as in the deep spiritual closeness arising from marital union Incarnation, one finds a true fatherhood: the human and the interpersonal contact between man and form of the family of the Son of God, a true human woman have their definitive origin in the Spirit, the family, formed by the divine mystery. In this Giver of Life (cf. Jn 6:63). Joseph, in obedience to family, Joseph is the father: his fatherhood is not the Spirit, found in the Spirit the source of love, the one that derives from begetting offspring; but conjugal love which he experienced as a man. And neither is it an "apparent" or merely "substitute" this love proved to be greater than this "just man" fatherhood. Rather, it is one that fully shares in could ever have expected within the limits of his authentic human fatherhood and the mission of a human heart. father in the family. This is a consequence of the hypostatic union: humanity taken up into the unity 20. In the Liturgy, Mary is celebrated as "united to of the Divine Person of the Word-Son, Jesus Joseph, the just man, by a bond of marital and Christ. Together with human nature, all that is virginal love." There are really two kinds of love human, and especially the family - as the first here, both of which together represent the mystery dimension of man's existence in the world - is also of the Church - virgin and spouse - as symbolized taken up in Christ. JOSEPH (Continue praying this novena which began on March 11 and concludes on March 19, the Solemnity of St. Joseph)

We know Joseph was a man of faith, obedient to whatever God asked of him without knowing the outcome. When the angel came to Joseph in a dream and told him the truth about the child Mary was carrying, Joseph immediately and without question or concern for gossip, took Mary as his wife. When the angel came again to tell him that his family was in danger, he immediately left everything he owned, all his family and friends, and fled to a strange country with his young wife and the baby. He waited in Egypt without question until the angel told him it was safe to go back.

Be my guide, my father, and my model through life that I may merit to die as you did in the arms of Jesus and Mary.

Loving Saint Joseph, faithful follower of Jesus Christ, I raise my heart to you to implore your powerful intercession in obtaining from the Divine Heart of Jesus all the graces necessary for my spiritual and temporal welfare, particularly the grace of a happy death, and the special grace I now implore:

(Mention your request/petition).

Guardian of the Word Incarnate, I feel confident that your prayers in my behalf will be graciously heard before the throne of God. Amen.

ST. JOSEPH MEMORARE Remember, most pure spouse of Mary, ever Virgin, my loving protector, Saint Joseph, that no one ever had recourse to your protection or asked for your aid without obtaining relief. Lenten Regulations Everyone 14 years of age or over is bound to abstain from meat on Ash Wednesday and all the Fridays of Lent. All from the age of 18 years up to the beginning of their 60th year are bound to fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. On these two days of fast and abstinence, only one full meatless meal is allowed. Two other meatless meals, sufficient to maintain strength, may be taken according to each one’s needs, but together they should not equal another full meal. Eating between meals is not permitted on these two days, but liquids, including milk and fruit juices are allowed. When health or ability to work would be seriously affected, the law does not oblige. To disregard completely the law of fast and abstinence is seriously sinful. Lent is the principal season of penance in the Church year. All of the faithful are strongly urged to develop and follow a program of voluntary self-denial (in addition to following the Lenten regulations), serious prayer, and a performance of works of charity and mercy. Those who are sick, pregnant, or nursing, or whose health would adversely be affected by fasting or abstinence, should not consider themselves bound by these norms.

Come With Us to Pray For Life

Lent reminds us to step out of our comfort zone a bit as we prepare for Easter. You can do that in the traditional way by giving something up. Or you can reach out to help someone less fortunate and more vulnerable. Why not come out and pray for the most vulnerable among us...the unborn.

Join your fellow Corpus Christi congregants, as we begin the spring campaign for 40 Days for Life, by coming out and praying peacefully at Access Health Care, 1700 75th St. Downers Grove. The 40 Days for Life effort began in 2004 in Texas and has spread all over the world and is responsible for saving thousands of babies from abortion, closing hundreds of abortion clinics and converting many abortion workers to life.

We will pray during the 10 AM time slot at Access Health Care, 1700 75th St. Downers Grove on Thursday mornings during Lent. If you want to carpool, meet at Corpus Christi Church at 9:30 AM.

Go to the 40 Days for Life-Downers Grove website to sign up for hours. It lets the organizers know if they have enough people to cover each time period. https://www.40daysforlife.com/downersgrove Lenten Resources How do you prepare for Lent?
