Distant Music An autoethnographic study of global songwriting in the digital age. SHEILA SIMMENES SUPERVISOR Michael Rauhut University of Agder, 2020 Faculty of Fine Arts Department of Popular music 2 Abstract This thesis aims to explore the path to music creation and shed a light on how we may maneuver songwriting and music production in the digital age. As a songwriter in 2020, my work varies from being in the same physical room using digital communication with collaborators from different cultures and sometimes even without ever meeting face to face with the person I'm making music with. In this thesis I explore some of the opportunities and challenges of this process and shine a light on tendencies and trends in the field. As an autoethnographic research project, this thesis offers an insight into the songwriting process and continuous development of techniques by myself as a songwriter in the digital age, working both commercially and artistically with international partners across the world. The thesis will aim to supplement knowledge on current working methods in songwriting and will hopefully shine a light on how one may improve as a songwriter and topliner in the international market. We will explore the tools and possibilities available to us, while also reflecting upon what challenges and complications one may encounter as a songwriter in the digital age. 3 4 Acknowledgements I wish to express my gratitude to my supervisor Michael Rauhut for his insight, expertise and continued support during this work; associate professor Per Elias Drabløs for his kind advice and feedback; and to my artistic supervisor Bjørn Ole Rasch for his enthusiasm and knowledge in the field of world music and international collaborations.

  • AFL Coaching Newsletter - April 2009
AFL Coaching Newsletter - April 2009 THE NEW SEASON Most community football leagues around Australia kick off this weekend or immediately after Easter and NAB AFL Auskick Centres commence their programs in the next month. This newsletter focuses on a range of topics which are relevant to the commencement of the 2009 Australian Football season. PLAYING AND TRAINING IN HOT CONDITIONS The new season generally starts in warm to hot conditions and there is always a lift in intensity once the premiership season proper starts. Regardless of the quality of pre-season training programs, early games are usually more stressful and players and coaches should keep safety factors associated with high intensity exercise in warm conditions in mind – these include individual player workloads (use of the bench), hydration and sun sense. The following article by AIS/AFL Academy dietitian Michelle Cort provides good advice regarding player hydration. Toughen Up - Have a Drink! Why are so many trainers necessary on a senior AFL field and why they are constantly approaching players for a drink during a game? Obviously the outcome of not drinking enough fluid is dehydration. The notion of avoiding fluid during sport to ‘train’, ‘toughen’ or ‘adjust’ an athlete’s body to handle dehydration is extremely outdated & scientifically incorrect. Even very small amounts of dehydration will reduce an AFL player’s performance. Most senior AFL conditioning, nutrition and medical staff invest considerable time into ensuring the players are doing everything possible to prevent significant dehydration from occurring in training and games. The effects on performance are not limited to elite athletes.

  • Creative Collabs and Technology in the Time of Coronavirus
COLLAB CORNER Creative Collabs and Technology in the Time of Coronavirus Margo Garrett oday is May 1 in Minnesota and it should be a sunny day. Like many similar days of late, it looks as if it wants to be sunny. I can see bright azure sky peeping out of tiny openings in a translucent covering of Watteau-esque gray. Perhaps Mother Nature does Tnot want to offend our prevailing states of sadness and fear with the overt gleefulness of her brightest splendors. If so, I thank her for her sensitivity. I simply cannot all at once rejoice in coming spring, but trust that Nature will gradually persuade me by her overwhelmingly opulent gifts of warmth, green, fragrance, breeze, and, yes, even sun, to join her May Day dance. I pray that Margo Garrett by the time you read this in September, we will have found a treatment or even a cure. In the meantime, music, musicians, friends, my husband, and Zoom sustain me. I bought a Zoom recorder some years ago for my students to use to record their lessons and to borrow when they needed to make audition videos. The audio is superior, and the video the clearest I have ever seen. A wonderful little machine it is. So when someone asked me in the last year or so if I used Zoom, I enthusiastically responded, “Yes, of course!” How shocked I was, then, to find myself soon thereafter staring at my own live image in a bingo-like grid on my computer desktop with eight other friends and board members smiling in delight and waving at me! What a wonderful invention! Since then, it is my preferred choice of communication—a telephone all grown up and personal.

Penjor in Hindu Communities: A symbolic phrases of relations between human to human, to environment, and to God Makna penjor bagi Masyarakat Hindu: Kompleksitas ungkapan simbolis manusia kepada sesama, lingkungan, dan Tuhan I Gst. Pt. Bagus Suka Arjawa1* & I Gst. Agung Mas Rwa Jayantiari2 1Department of Sociology, Faculty of Social and Political Sciences, Universitas Udayana 2Faculty of Law, Universitas Udayana Address: Jalan Raya Kampus Unud Jimbaran, South Kuta, Badung, Bali 80361 E-mail: [email protected]* & [email protected] Abstract The purpose of this article was to observe the development of the social meaning derived from penjor (bamboo decorated with flowers as an expression of thanks to God) for the Balinese Hindus. In the beginning, the meaning of penjor serves as a symbol of Mount Agung, and it developed as a human wisdom symbol. This research was conducted in Badung and Tabanan Regency, Bali using a qualitative method. The time scope of this research was not only on the Galungan and Kuningan holy days, where the penjor most commonly used in society. It also used on the other holy days, including when people hold the caru (offerings to the holy sacrifice) ceremony, in the temple, or any other ceremonial place and it is also displayed at competition events. The methods used were hermeneutics and verstehen. These methods served as a tool for the researcher to use to interpret both the phenomena and sentences involved. The results of this research show that the penjor has various meanings. It does not only serve as a symbol of Mount Agung and human wisdom; and it also symbolizes gratefulness because of God’s generosity and human happiness and cheerfulness.

  • Israel at 70
Israel at 70 Israel as a Double Gift Dr. Ari Berman, President, Yeshiva University Our generation is blessed to witness the 70th birthday of the modern State of Israel. While the State of Israel is of profound importance to Jews everywhere, it holds unique resonance for us as religious Zionists, for it potentially signals the coming of a long-hoped-for redemption. Consequently, as we reflect upon the seven decades since Israel’s birth, it is useful to clarify the way in which a modern nation-state like Israel can herald redemption. Of the many foundational ideas that Biblical Israel has contributed to the history of civilization, perhaps the most ambitious is the concept of a collective redemption—the notion that not only should individuals strive for their ultimate betterment, but that society can and must move history forward together. Reflections on this theme are most concentrated in the Bible’s prophetic literature. Broadly speaking, one finds therein two contrasting models for what redemption entails, the first represented in the book of Ezekiel, the second in the book of Isaiah. Ezekiel, in chapter 37, envisions redemption as a project fundamentally benefitting the Jewish people. Although dispersed throughout the world, and oppressed throughout history, this paradigmatic minority will one day be revived. The climax of Ezekiel’s best known eschatological prophecy—his vision of the valley of the dry bones—is God’s promise to His people: “I will bring you back to the land of Israel” (37:12). For Ezekiel, the goal of the redemptive process is internally oriented. Isaiah, by contrast, consistently articulates a redemptive vision that encompasses all of humanity.
