1 CGCA Welcome Calvert Green Community Association

Welcome to the Summer Chairman Kathy Moore 730292 [email protected] & edition of the CGCA 300 Club [email protected] Newsletter

Treasurer John Hopkins 733509 [email protected] Hello everyone, & Hopefully Summer will soon arrive and shine on us for our next major event which is our Vice Chair [email protected] Summer Fayre on Sunday 15th July 2012.

Since our last newsletter things have been as busy as ever in Calvert Green. The Easter Egg Hunt went ahead which was organised by the Claydons and Swan Team. I would like to thank Secretary Stefanie Bone 730691 [email protected] everyone who put a great deal of effort in to this event to allow the younger members of Calvert Green to enjoy an afternoon of hunting, creating and generally having fun.

The Music Quiz was, as ever, a great success with the Hall to capacity as people enjoyed Events Karen Ford 733286 [email protected] socialising, pitting their wits against opposing teams and eating fish and chips and drinking. Our grateful thanks go to Peter Ford and Adrian Bone who proved to be a wonderful “double act” in organising and presenting the quiz.

The CGCA organised an open afternoon in May when a good number of residents popped in Hall Jenny Blakeley 733584 [email protected] for a cuppa and chat to talk about their needs for the community and to get to know some Bookings of the CGCA Committee. We hope to hold another similar afternoon in the future.

The Queen’s Jubilee, as you know, was not celebrated as a community event due to the fact Newsletter Jenny Blakeley 733584 [email protected] that out of our committee of five, four were on half term holiday. This, coupled with the fact that the Summer Fayre is looming fast on the horizon, meant that we were unable to spread ourselves around to cover this event. However, the Parish Council were kind enough to donate a quantity of bunting which we distributed on a first come first served basis to residents who made good efforts in decorating their homes. This coupled with the efforts of some volunteers who kindly placed Union flags and George flags on lamp posts through the centre of the village have helped keep this period of time celebrated. Special thanks to Posts available Allan Brough who put these flags up for us. If you have enjoyed any of the events laid on by the CGCA you The Euro football finals were screened in the Hall and I would like to thank the W.I , Lee at the Karate Club and Pip Dicey for their flexibility in moving their dates to accommodate probably have some indication of the need to have people commit- the first and second games. They were all well attended resulting in much needed funds ted to making it happen. We really need others to step in and help being raised by the CGCA bar. Thanks to those of you who came in support. keep the CGCA strong, even if you can only give a few hours of There will be three visits from the Play in the Parishes group over the Summer. In the past your time, it would be put to good use! this has been provided free of charge by AVDC but due to cut backs this now has to be partly funded. The CGCA will meet part of these costs but we would also like to thank Cat- Please contact any member of the CGCA if you are interested erpillars and C.H.Y.N.A. for their contributions in making these events possible.

Next of course the Summer Fayre followed by the Olympics. Let’s hope the sun shines for all of us. 2 Looking forward to seeing you. 33 Kathy Moore, Chairman

8 27 Calvert Green Parish Council News

New Councillors The Parish Council welcomes 2 new councillors in May; Cllr Amanda Beckett and Cllr Craig Decent, which brings us up to a full complement for the first time! Working with FCC Environment Now that the incinerator has been granted planning permission, we are hoping to re-attack the matter of trying to get some allotments and the playing field from FCC Environment, (formerly WRG), in the near future. There is an ongoing issue with HGVs speeding on Brackley Lane. FCC has been made aware of this and they have asked that anyone who witnesses this, report it to them. If you could pro- vide the name of the company and the time and date it happened they will deal with it. Their telephone number is 01296 738837. HS2 The next meeting of the HS2 community forum is due on the 26th May and we should hopefully start to address the mitigation of the effects that will impact us in Calvert Green and the surrounding parishes. These meetings should take place every 6-8 weeks for the next year before the final bill goes before parlia- ment. If anyone has any specific issues that they want to be raised they can sub- mit them via the website http://highspeedrail.dft.gov.uk/node/4151 ,where the agenda and minutes of the meetings can also be found. Future Council Meetings All residents are welcome and are encouraged to ask questions or raise any con- cerns they have in the Open Forum at the end of the formal meeting. If you are unable to attend but do wish to raise something with the Council, please contact the Parish Clerk 01280 814739 or email at [email protected] no less than 5 working days before the next Council Meeting. Council meetings are held at the Community Hall approximately every 6 weeks at the start time of 8.00 pm. Date of next meetings; Tuesday 7th August and Tuesday 25th September Parish Council Web pages All matters are discussed at the Parish Council meetings and subsequently updat- ed on the websiteFollow the link at www.calvertgreen.com Carl Blakeley, Chairman

10 25 Elderflower cordial

Elderflower cordial is a delicious traditional Victorian drink, with roots going back to Roman times. The fragrant flower heads bloom in May or June. Pick your elderflower heads on a sunny day, above dog height (!) and away from roads or potential chemicals. Always leave plenty of blossom on the bush to help pollination for future years and to ensure a crop of elderberries later.

The Citric Acid acts as a preservative, but the recipe will work without if you can’t get it, and the high sugar content will help keep it fresh for a while – although you’ll probably drink it pretty quickly!

You need 2Kg sugar 2 pints boiling water 25 blossomy elderflower heads 3 lemons 75g Citric Acid (optional)

Do This: Shake the elderflower heads outside to give any bugs a chance to escape

In a large saucepan dissolve the sugar in the boiling water

Pare the zest off the lemons and add this to the liquid together with the sliced lemons (ends removed)

Place the elderflower heads into a bowl and pour the liquid over then stir in the citric acid (if you have it)

Leave for 24 hours covered with a cloth

Sieve and strain the liquid to remove all solids and any remaining dead bugs

Pour into sterilised bottles and enjoy diluted to taste with still or sparkling water

Also goes well with gin. How super!

This recipe is from ‘Our Favourite Recipes’ - the Calvert Green WI cookbook. This small book contains 25 guaranteed, tried and tested recipes from local WI ladies.

Costing just £1, the book is available at any WI meeting or at the Summer Fayre, or con- tact Amanda via the Calvert Green Residents Group on Facebook.

Watch out!

Thieves are targeting catalytic converters (located in the exhaust system on the undercarriage of vehicles) because of the high value of the precious metals they contain, with prices rising significantly in recent years. You need to be aware of the risk of catalytic converter theft, particularly if your vehicle has a high ground clearance.

Why a catalytic converter is so valuable The device, designed to reduce carbon emissions, is partly composed of platinum (and palladium and rhodium) a metal more valuable than gold. When the platinum is extracted, it can be worth hundreds of pounds. A catalytic converter can cost up to £1000 to replace.

Vehicle types most at risk

 Mercedes Sprinter vans.  BMW’s – cars, vans and 4 x 4’s.  Volvos – regardless of size, including HGV trucks.

 VW’s – commercials, Golf, Passat diesels.  Peugeot 406 diesel.  Fiat diesels – all sizes.
