NATIONAL is the new Vice President of  Former Union Minister Venkaiah Naidu is elected as the 13th Vice . He secured twice as many votes as Gopalkrishna Gandhi, who was opposition parties general candidate. Venkaiah Naidu is sworn in as new Vice president of the country on August 11, 2017.  Out of 771 votes cast, Naidu secured 516 votes in his favour, Gandhi managed to get only 244 votes. Since only Parliamentary members are allowed to vote in this election, there were 790 votes in total. Over 98 percent voting was recorded in the vice-presidential election.  The tenure of 12th Vice President ended on August 10th.He has served as Vice President for two continuous terms (2007–2012 and 2012–2017). In the 2012 Vice Presidential election polls, Ansari had bagged 490 and NDA nominee Jaswant Singh 238 votes.  Naidu has also been credited as the vice president, who has been elected with the highest number of votes (516 votes) in the past 25 years.

Hathkargha Samvardhan Sahayata  It is the scheme launched by the Ministry of Textiles for handloom weavers.  The scheme aims to improve earnings of the handlooms weavers.  It helps to meet the needs of the handloom weavers for assistance for looms and accessories on larger scale with an objective to improve quality of fabric and productivity.  Under this scheme, GoI assists the weaver by bearing 90% of the cost of new looms so that they do not have to bear the heavy financial burden.

Mumbai Metro introduces India's first Mobile Ticketing System  Metro One will launch the India’s first Mobile Ticketing System ‘OnGo’ which will help commuters pass the Automated Fare Collection (AFC) gates using their mobile phones.  Commuters of Mumbai Metro will now be able to make use their smartphones for journey ticket, apart from tokens and smart cards  The commuters will be able to buy tickets or monthly passes using the Mumbai Metro app on their smartphone.  The system is in the final advanced stage of testing and will be implemented by mid-August.

7 August: National Handloom Day  The National Handloom Day is being observed every year on 7 August to honour the handloom weavers in the country and also carter an impetus to India’s handloom industry.

 This year it was third edition of the National Handloom Day after it was instituted in 2015.
