FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE 31st Annual TD Vancouver International Jazz Festival 10 CONCERT PRESENTATIONS and LATE NIGHT JAM SESSIONS at FRANKIE’S JAZZ CLUB, June 24 – July 3, 2016 Reservations for Frankie’s at 778.727.0337, www.coastaljazz.ca and admission at the door Since launching in October 2015, Frankie’s Jazz Club—a Coastal Jazz initiative— has quickly become the epicentre for jazz and blues in Vancouver. Centrally located in downtown Vancouver at 765 Beatty Street (adjacent to the Georgian Court Hotel) the warmly elegant room has a capacity of 100 and is designed for maximum listening pleasure. The club has operated continuously (Thursday – Sunday) playing host to many of the region’s top jazz and blues artists and on occasion has presented touring national and international groups. During the Jazz Festival, Frankie’s will feature an extraordinary lineup of talent from both the local and international jazz communities. Shows commence nightly at 8pm over the ten days of the Festival. Reservations at 778.727.0337 and www.coastaljazz.ca are recommended for guaranteed admission and priority seating. NEW AND EXCITING this year is the opportunity for audiences to enjoy FREE NIGHTLY JAM SESSIONS anchored by acclaimed saxophonist Mike Allen and his quartet. Both resident and international Festival musicians are invited to join forces on the bandstand and let the music play. The proceedings begin at 11pm from June 24 to July 3. He has been the drummer of choice for an incredible array of artists from Betty Carter, Tommy Flanagan and Ron Carter to Branford Marsalis, Sonny Rollins and Renee Rosnes. With Russ Botten bass. ANDRÉ LEROUX QUARTET June 26 Frankie’s Jazz Club @ 8pm $15 + GST Founding member of the acclaimed Quasar saxophone quartet, Montreal’s André Leroux (Christine Jensen, François Bourassa, Jazzlab) is a versatile reedsman who brings warm-toned virtuosity to tenor and soprano saxes, flute, and bass clarinet. His recent album Synchronie-Cités honours his John Coltrane and Sonny Rollins influences through new compositions and passionate interpretations. With Frederic Alarie bass. FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE STEVE KALDESTAD & THE RENEE ROSNES TRIO June 27 & 28 Frankie’s Jazz Club @ 8pm $30 + GST Vancouver saxophonist Steve Kaldestad is an in-demand musician as his work with Jesse Cahill’s Nightcrawlers, Jodi Proznick and others clearly attests. His latest release NY Afternoon (featuring The Rosnes Trio) was released to critical acclaim. Joining Kaldestad is one of the great artists of her generation—pianist/composer Renee Rosnes. A four-time JUNO Award winner, NY-based Rosnes creates fiery, forthright post-bop, full of bold imagination. She’s performed with Joe Henderson, Ron Carter, Wayne Shorter, and with husband and fellow pianist Bill Charlap. Her music “offers exquisite balances of delicacy and power, assertiveness and deference.” (Downbeat) With Neil Swainson bass, Lewis Nash drums. TWO MUCH GUITAR/MIKE RUD MINIATURES June 29 Frankie’s Jazz Club @ 8pm $15 + GST Award-winning guitarists Bill Coon and Oliver Gannon join forces for a swinging affair. With rock-solid rhythm-mates Darren Radtke bass and Dave Robbins drums, this classic jazz quartet celebrates influences such as Wes Montgomery and Jim Hall but has a sound all its own. Mike Rud magically weaves multiple melodic lines without multi-tracking using just voice and guitar. The result is a ‘miniature’ band. AMANDA TOSOFF “WORDS” PROJECT June 30 Frankie’s Jazz Club @ 8pm $15 + GST On her new release Words, pianist/composer Amanda Tosoff stretches the confines of conventional jazz. She has taken poems and lyrics that possess a personal resonance for her and framed them in original new compositions that include vocals for the first time. The result is an eclectic collection that incorporates elements of jazz, art song, classical, and folk/pop while re-casting the poems of award-winning Canadian poets Tim Bowling and Laura Lush, as well as William Wordsworth and Edgar Allan Poe, and contemporary artists like Joni Mitchell and Yo Yo Ma. With Felicity Williams voice, Alex Goodman guitar, Jon Maharaj bass, Morgan Childs drums. CORY WEEDS QUINTET FEATURING TERELL STAFFORD July 1 & 2 Frankie’s Jazz Club @ 8pm $25 + GST Vancouver tenor saxophonist Cory Weeds is an expressive player with a sound firmly rooted in the jazz tradition. This past year Weeds’ 10th release as a leader, This Happy Madness, spent 3 weeks at #1 on the JazzWeek charts. Trumpeter Terell Stafford is a giant of contemporary jazz, an incredibly gifted and versatile player who combines a deep love of melody with his own brand of spirited and adventurous lyricism. The quintet will play music from Stafford’s latest release on Capri Records,BrotherLee Love (Celebrating Lee Morgan) With Miles Black piano, Michael Glynn bass, Julian MacDonough drums.
