SUNDAY SCHOOL ONLINE Today We Finish Our Journey Through the Book Of Boys and Girls Welcome to SUNDAY SCHOOL ONLINE Today we finish our journey through the book of At the end of the lesson you will find out where we go from here! But first . She opens her mouth in wisdom, And the teaching of kindness is on her tongue. She looks well to the ways of her household, And does not eat the bread of idleness. Her children rise up and bless her; Her husband also, and he praises her, saying: “Many daughters have done nobly, But you excel them all.” Charm is deceitful and beauty is vain, But a woman who fears the Lord, she shall be praised. Give her the product of her hands, And let her works praise her in the gates. Proverbs 31:26-31 From all of us in the Children’s Ministry: GREETINGS IN THE NAME OF THE LORD ! Parents are welcome and even encouraged to teach this lesson to your kids! “These words, which I am commanding you today, shall be on your heart. YOU shall TEACH them diligently to your sons and shall talk of them when you sit in your house and when you walk by What an awesome privilege and the way and when you lie down responsibility you have as parents! and when you rise up.” And not only does this benefit Deuteronomy 6:6,7 your kids, but YOU as well! Let’s begin today’s lesson by talking to God in prayer! “. Pray that the unsaved will seek after God! Strong in faith Grounded in God’s Word and prayer Provide for them and their family Healing Love their persecutors “And He said to them, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation.” Mark 16:15 Pray for our missionaries that God would bless, protect, provide, encourage, give strength and bold- nes, and lead many lost people to Christ. Pray for whatever is on your heart. Make your own list. Family members who do not know Jesus! Kids, every Sunday morning in ”Big Church,” Pastor Jeff has all the people in the service read a Psalm together with him before preaching. So let’s do that as well before we get into the lesson. If you have your Bible, you and your parents can read Psalm 67 and see how it applies to today’s lesson. If you don’t have a Bible, you can read the following: Psalm 67 1 May God be gracious to us and bless us and make His face shine on us— 2 So that Your ways may be known on earth, Your salvation among all nations. 3 May the peoples praise You, God; may all the peoples praise You. 4 May the nations be glad and sing for joy, for You rule the peoples with equity and guide the nations of the earth. 5 May the peoples praise You, God; may all the peoples praise You. 6 The land yields its harvest; God, our God, blesses us. 7 May God bless us still, so that all the ends of the earth will fear Him. Review From the Previous Lesson on Nehemiah In case you missed it! AS YOU GO THROUGH THE LESSON, YOU WILL SEE A SERIES OF PICTURES WITH A SCRIPTURE VERSE AND A QUESTION. FIRST, READ THE VERSE, STUDY THE PICTURE THEN ANSWER THE QUESTION. What did Nehemiah’s enemies do Nehemiah 6:1,2 to lure him away from the city? THANK YOU PARENTS FOR GOING THROUGH THIS WITH YOUR CHILD BEFORE YOU START, PRAY IN CASE THEY HAVE AND ASK THE HOLY SPIRIT QUESTIONS. TO HELP YOU UNDERSTAND! Nehemiah !Walls ! See the wall? It's "knee-high" to help you remember this book called Nehemiah ("Knee-High-Miah"). Nehemiah wasn't really a giant in size. But he did a giant job! He led the Jews in rebuilding the Walls around Jerusalem. ! They had already built a new temple. But the city where the temple was, Jerusalem, wasn't safe. Back then a city was only safe if it had a high wall around it, like a fort. (Have you ever built a fort out of sticks or sand?) Walls around cities kept enemies from coming in. So without a wall, Jerusalem was in trouble! ! God knew that. So He had Nehemiah come from the faraway land called Persia (the Persians captured it from the Babylonians) where most of the Jews had been living in exile. The Persian king let Nehemiah lead another group back home to Jerusalem. ! When they got back home, they started right away to build the wall. Nehemiah was in charge. Even though some enemies were against rebuilding the high wall, it was finished in only 52 days! The city was safe! And the Jews were happy that God brought Nehemiah to build the wall. Book of Key Word: WALLS NEHEMIAH Nehemiah 5:1-5 Why were the people in Jerusalem so upset? What did the nobles and the Nehemiah 5:6-8 rulers say to Nehemiah after he chewed them out? Nehemiah was bold and not afraid to confront the nobles. He was Nehemiah 5:9,10 PRAYED UP!!! What was the response of Nehemiah 5:12 the nobles and leaders? Nehemiah 5:15 What did Nehemiah have that the other leaders did not? Nehemiah 6:1,2 Nehemiah received a message from his enemies, but how did he know it was a trick? Nehemiah 6:3 – What was Nehemiah’s reply? The enemy will lie and make up stories Nehemiah 6:5-7 to disrupt the work of God. And who do you think is behind all this? And Nehemiah knew the source of his strength: “ . The joy of the LORD is your strength!” (Nehemiah 8:10) Nehemiah 6:14 What does Nehemiah always do when facing a challenge? To the people of the earth! Psalm 107:8 “Oh that man would praise the Lord for His wonderful works to the children of men.” This Week’s Lesson: Nehemiah – Pt 5 “”The Leader With a Thankful Heart” Lesson Scriptures: Nehemiah 6:15,16; 7:1-6; 8:1-18; 11:1,2; 12:27-43 Chapter 6 Whenever you start a project that seems overwhelming at first, remember Nehemiah . Take one day at a time covered with PRAYER ! WHAT A MIRACLE! Nehemiah 6:15 The wall was built in only how many days? Kids, GOD is still in the “Miracle-Making” business today . Learn from Nehemiah that ABSOLUTELY NOTHING is impossible with GOD! Nehemiah 6:15 Can you imagine how encouraging it was for the Israelites to see what GOD did? Who else was amazed that the work Nehemiah 6:16 had been completed so fast? The people knew exactly why they were able to build it so fast! And what did Nehemiah 6:16 state, that not only did Israel’s enemies recognize that the work was accomplished with the help of the GOD of Israel . But because of that, the enemy lost their confidence! They knew they would be stupid to try to go up against Nehemiah and his GOD! Nehemiah 7:1 Nehemiah 7:1. Besides the Gatekeepers, who else did Nehemiah appoint? Now you can see why we pray for “all those is authority” every week! “I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people— 2 for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness. 3 This is good, and pleases God our Savior, 4 who wants all people to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth.” I Timothy 2:1-4 They believed God was the one true God, And they had a holy reverence toward Him! Can others say that about YOU? Boys and girls, take a minute right now to pray for our leaders, that they would be like Nehemiah’s brother and would be faithful and that they would fear GOD! How did Nehemiah decide Nehemiah 7:3,4 who would guard the gates? Nehemiah 7:5,6 God told Nehemiah to make a list of the nobles who returned from Babylon. Ask your parents what a genealogy is. Now that the walls were rebuilt, Nehemiah still wanted to see how he can be a blessing to the PEOPLE OF GOD and the CITY OF GOD. He noticed that the population was low and there were many abandoned houses.

    Pressing On Nehemiah 6:1-19 INTRODUCTION The famous Olympic athlete Jim Thorpe was no stranger to adversity. Growing up in the early 1900's as a Native American, Jim experienced the horrors of racism and prejudice. Not only that, he had to deal with the reality of death at an early age. His twin brother died when they were only 9 years old. And before he reached adulthood, both of his parents also died, leaving Jim an orphan. But God blessed Thorpe in one particular way—his athletic ability. He was one of the first players to ever play professional baseball and football. He was one of those rare athletes that excelled at whatever sport he tried. And among all of his accomplishments, perhaps his greatest was his two Gold medals in the 1912 summer Olympic games in Stockholm Sweden. Shortly before he was to start in the pentathlon, someone stole his shoes. Instead of giving up, Jim went to the trash and found two shoes … of two styles. One was an athletic shoe and another was a loafer. Each shoe was a different size. He compensated by adding an extra sock. He was determined to run the race that he had been asked to run. His perseverance and resolve to finish the race is what enabled him to run it. Jim was determined to run the race set before him with no excuses. You and I, have a race set before us. In fact, more than once the Bible uses this kind of imagery to describe the Christian life.

Compromise: Nehemiah 6:17-19 walls were rebuilt but the gates remained unfinished. With the end in sight, Nehemiah and the people were given another test of faith. Realizing the city would soon be fortified Sanballat and his allies launched multiple attacks against the Jews. This time, they went after Nehemiah personally. It began with a request for a meeting, which seemed innocent enough. It was an invitation for Nehemiah to meet with Sanballat and Geshem in a village in the plain of Ono, about 25 miles northwest of Jerusalem. 1 The request was denied. Though it appeared to be generous, Nehemiah knew they were up to no good (Proverbs 12:6). Apparently they hoped to cause problems for Nehemiah. Maybe they planned to threaten him or even worse, slay him. Nehemiah wisely avoided meeting with these wicked men. He offered two reasons for his refusal. First, his work was too great for him to leave. The rebuilding of the walls was his assignment; he could not and would not waste time on anything else. To Nehemiah, God's work was extremely important. Second, if he left the work would cease. The rebuilding of the walls did not commence until Nehemiah arrived, so if he were gone, the people would probably return to their old ways.

    TREACHERY, SLANDER, DECEPTION, AND BETRAYAL Nehemiah 6 7/10/16 Most of us at some time have been on the receiving end of treachery, slander, deception, and betray. It is sometimes difficult to know how to respond properly. Nehemiah experienced more than his share of each of these. This morning we will learn from his example how we should respond. When Israel’s enemies saw that they could not stop the rebuilding of the city wall by an open military attack, they decided to overcome the Jews by deception. This time the sole object of their attack was Nehemiah. They figured that if they could remove or discredit the leader, they could discourage the people and stop the building of the wall. 1. Nehemiah’s enemies called for a meeting . 6:1-4 On the surface it appeared that Sanballat and his cohorts wanted to have a peace conference. • They called for a meeting with Nehemiah in Ono, which is located about 20 miles from Jerusalem. • They probably claimed that they wanted to: ♦ “Clarify Nehemiah’s intentions and clear up any misunderstanding.” ♦ “Restore their relationship” ♦ “Make peace” • Nehemiah knew that discussions with God’s enemies would be fruitless at best. ♦ Compromise is not an option when it comes to doing God’s will. • In reality they were trying to lure Nehemiah into a trap in order to capture or assassinate him. v. 2 Nehemiah recognized that it was a plot to harm him. If Sanballat and his friends had really been interested in reconciliation they could have come to Jerusalem.

    Nehemiah 6:17 – 7:73 Stepping Out in Faith This morning we return to chapter 6 to finish up our look at that chapter – time did not permit us to finish up the chapter the last time we were together. The context of things is that the rebuilding of the wall of Jerusalem has just been completed. It was a project that was 100 some years in the making. The enemy (Babylon) had come in and destroyed both the city and the temple way back in 586 BC. Here we are now in the 440’s. No doubt people had thought about taking on this project before many times, but for one reason or another, they failed to do so. Nehemiah and the other Israelites, however, are able to do what for over 100 years others could not (or would not) do - rebuild the walls. And, as we learned in 6:15, he does so in 52 days. So the wall was finished on the twenty-fifth day of the month Elul, in fifty-two days. Nehemiah 6:15 The people had a mind to work and the hand of our good LORD was upon it. A great victory had been accomplished, but as we will learn in verse 17, that doesn’t mean the battle is over. The battle will continue to be waged and thus the need for diligence will continue. Let’s look at the latest scheme of the enemy starting in verse 17. Moreover, in those days the nobles of Judah sent many letters to Tobiah, and Tobiah’s letters came to them.

    Notes on Nehemiah 2014 Edition Dr. Thomas L. Constable Introduction TITLE This book, like so many others in the Old Testament, received its title from its principal character. The Septuagint (Greek) translation also had the same title, as does the Hebrew Bible. The Jews kept Ezra and Nehemiah together for many years.1 The reason was the historical continuity that flows from Ezra through Nehemiah. For many years, believers regarded Ezra and Nehemiah as twin books. They called them 1 and 2 Ezra (or "Esdras," the Greek transliteration of Ezra). Jerome, who lived in the fourth century A.D., gave Second Ezra the name "Nehemiah." This fact illustrates the close relationship that exists between these two books. A single story begins in Ezra and ends in Nehemiah. WRITER AND DATE The use of the first person identifies the author as Nehemiah, the governor of the Persian province of Judah (1:1—2:20; 13:4-31). His name means "Yahweh has comforted" or "Yahweh comforts." The mention of Darius the Persian in 12:22 probably refers to Darius II, the successor of Artaxerxes I (Longimanus).2 Darius ruled from 423-404 B.C. The text refers to an event that took place in Darius' reign (12:22). Therefore, Nehemiah must have written the book sometime after that reign began. Since there are no references to Nehemiah's age in the text, it is hard to estimate how long he may have lived. When the book opens, he was second in command under King Artaxerxes (cf. Daniel). If he was 40 years old then and 41 when he reached Jerusalem in 444 B.C., he would have been 62 years old in 423 B.C.

    Creekside Community Church: “Working with God” The Book of Nehemiah Facing Deception (Nehemiah 6:1-19) February 17, 2013 John Bruce- Pastor Have you ever been manipulated? All of us have. Some people manipulate with power – intimidation, threats, belittling, or withholding things we need or want. Others control people by doing things for us when we don’t request it, want it, or need it; so that we feel indebted and obligated to them. And some people manipulate by guilt - the gift that keeps on giving: shaming, scolding, blaming, making us feel like it’s our responsibility to fix their problems. And some manipulate through weakness and dependence; becoming helpless, needy, fearful, sick, incompetent or suicidal. Everybody has been manipulated. But did you know you were being manipulated at the time? That you were being deceived? Or what to do about it? This morning as we continue with the story of Nehemiah, I want to look at three critical lessons about how to overcome deception. The story of Nehemiah is a story about how God blesses people through other people. As the story opens, the great city of Jerusalem lies in ruins, surrounded by enemies, its walls destroyed 160 years earlier by the army of Babylon. The few Jews left in Jerusalem live in fear, poverty and compromise. The future of Jerusalem and the state of Israel is in jeopardy. And if Israel ceases to exist, God’s promise to bring the Messiah and Savior of the world from Israel cannot be fulfilled. God sends Nehemiah to rebuild both the city and its people; and as chapter 6 opens, the rebuilding of the walls has been completed.
