The Junto was a discussion group of young men seeking social, economic, intellectual, and political advancement. When they foundered on a point of fact, they needed a printed authority to set- tle the divergence of opinion. In colonial Pennsylvania at the time there were not many books. Standard English reference works were expensive and difficult to obtain. Franklin and his friends were mostly mechanics of moderate means. None alone could have afforded a representative li- brary, nor, indeed, many imported books. By pooling their resources in pragmatic Franklinian fashion, they could. The contribution of each cre- ated the book capital of all. Fifty subscribers invested forty shillings each and promised to pay ten shillings a year thereafter to buy books and maintain a shareholder’s library. -

Wisdom, Israel and Other Nations Perspectives from the Hebrew Bible, Deuterocanonical Literature, and the Dead Sea Scrolls Marko Marttila (University of Helsinki) and Mika S. Pajunen (University of Helsinki)1 “Wisdom” is a central concept in the Hebrew Bible and Early Jewish literature. An analysis of a selection of texts from the Second Temple period reveals that the way wisdom and its possession were understood changed gradually in a more exclusive direction. Deuteronomy 4 speaks of Israel as a wise people, whose wisdom is based on the diligent observance of the Torah. Prov- erbs 8 introduces personified Lady Wisdom that is at first a rather universal figure, but in later sources becomes more firmly a property of Israel.Ben Sira (Sir. 24) stressed the primacy of Israel by combining wisdom with the Torah, but he still attempted to do justice to other nations’ con- tacts with wisdom as well. One step further was taken by Baruch, as only Israel is depicted as the recipient of wisdom (Bar. 3–4). This more particularistic understanding of wisdom was also employed by the sages who wrote the compositions 4Q185 and 4Q525. Both of them emphasize the hereditary nature of wisdom, and 4Q525 even explicitly denies foreigners’ share of wisdom. The author of Psalm 154 goes furthest along this line of development by claiming wisdom to be a sole possession of the righteous among the Israelites. The question about possessing wisdom has moved from the level of nations to a matter of debate between different groups within Judaism. 1. Theme and Genre in 4Q177 and Its Scriptural Selections
THEME AND GENRE IN 4Q177 AND ITS SCRIPTURAL SELECTIONS Mark Laughlin and Shani Tzoref Jerusalem 4Q1771 has conventionally been classified as a “thematic pesher,”2 or, more recently as “thematic commentary,”3 or “eschatological midrash.”4 It is one of a group of Qumranic compositions in which the author cites and interprets biblical texts, applying them to the contemporary experience of his community, which he understands to be living in the eschatological era. Unlike the continuous pesharim, thematic pesha- rim are not structured as sequential commentaries on a particular 1 John M. Project description: This course will highlight Jerusalem as a historic and contemporary site of convergence between diverse artistic, religious, and political cultures and will deepen students’ understanding of the history of present-day questions surrounding Jerusalem as a contested city. The course will begin with the question of the relationship of archaeology, mapping, historical documents, and the writing of Jerusalem’s history. This introduction will span the entire historical period and will use the evolution of the architecture, urban formations, and related artistic cultures of Jerusalem as a lens for understanding the emergence and historical relationships of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. Students will investigate the related question of how archaeological heritage and artistic traditions are perceived in relation to claims of territorial belonging and / or dispossession. The course will then shift focus to the history of imagining Jerusalem. In this context, students will learn about the emergence of Jerusalem as a center for the cultures of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. Students will also explore the various historical perspectives on what constituted colonialism and the related role of the idea of Jerusalem as a physical and conceptual center for religious communities with world-wide scopes, especially in relation to the Crusader states, global Catholicism, the British Mandate, and the State of Israel. Students will investigate contemporary perceptions of Jerusalem, looking to representations of the city in cyberspace, in contexts like virtual reconstructions, digital archaeology, and digitized books (including historical manuscripts and early printed books). -

Rendsburg In January 2018, the Library of Congress announced that it had obtained a c. 1,000-year-old Torah scroll sheet. What makes this Torah scroll sheet so important? Where is it from? And how did it reach the halls of the de facto national library of the United States? Here is the story, though fi rst some background. As readers of BAR know, in ancient Israel and during the Greco- Roman period, biblical books were written on scrolls, made either from papyrus (in the earlier period) or from parchment (in the later period). Our most important testimony, of course, stems from the more than 200 biblical manuscripts found amongst the Dead Sea Scrolls at Qumran, dated from the third through fi rst centuries B.C.E. In the scroll format, the text was written on only one side of the available writing surface, what we may call the inside surface. With the rise of Christianity, the written text took a new form, the codex, the forerunner of the modern book. In this format, the text was written on both sides of the parchment sheet, and then the sheets were piled one on top of the other and sewn together—again, consider the modern book. The most famous exemplar is probably Codex Sinaiticus,* a complete (or nearly so) manuscript of the Greek Bible (including both * See “Who Owns the Codex Sinaiticus?” BAR, November/December 2007.
