3 Invitation from INTECOL President

At the beginning of the 21st Century ecological issues have never been more important, both at a global scale and at a national level. The international congresses of ecology provide important fora to learn more about these issues, to discuss recent advances in ecological science, and to highlight deficiencies in our knowledge which we urgently need to address.

The VIII Congress in Seoul, provides an important opportunity for ecologists to continue the advancement of our science, and to learn at first hand of the many pressing problems that we need to address. On behalf of the Board of INTECOL, I urge as many of you as possible to attend this congress and to contribute to its success. Those of us like me, who have been fortunate enough to enjoy the hospitality of the Ecological Society of Korea in the past, know that we can look forward to a well organised congress full of good science and most rewarding and enjoyable excursions and social events. I am looking forward to the Congress a great deal, and I hope to see many of you in Seoul supporting our Korean colleagues, continuing the advancement of our most important science, renewing old friendships and making many new ones.

HT-4. Mt. Namsan & Downtown Tour (Aug. 16 Friday, 13:00~18:00) Price: US$ 40/person (min.10 persons basis) Itinerary: Mt. Namsan Park - Seoul Tower - Namsan Hanok Village - Myeong-dong Conditions: Admission, English-speaking guide, Motor coach Notes: Hanok Village closed on Tuesday. Namsan Park is located on Mt. Namsan (256m), the center of Seoul. It contains a variety of cultural sites and entertainment facilities, including an octagonal pavilion at the summit, the Seoul Tower (236.7m), an aquarium, a fountain, as well as a botanical garden and a municipal library. Cable cars run to the top, providing a panoramic view of the entire capital city and its surrounding countryside. Moreover, many hundreds of plant species including 191 trees species grow here and squirrels inhabit the area. This is one of the most popular places for citizens of Seoul.

Seoul Tower, constructed from 1969 until 1975, is the first complex broadcasting tower in Korea. It is equipped with TV and FM sending antenna, cable antenna, communication antenna, and internet sending antenna. It was first opened to the public in October 1980. Seoul Tower Observatory is an excellent tourist destination, where you can see how the city of Seoul has developed over the last 600 years.

Hanok Village (named after a traditional Korean style house) was opened to the public in April 1998. Five traditional Korean houses have been restored on a 7,934m2 site. Since the houses of noblemen in the late Chosun era have been restored along with houses of middle class and commoners, one can compare the architectural styles, housing structures, and space arrangements while enjoying the beauty of Hanok.

Myeong-dong is a first-rate shopping and entertainment area. It is noted for its eating, drinking, and entertainment establishments, frequented by crowds of all ages. Many of the city’s top stores are located in the narrow alleys of Myeong-dong. Major fashion designers have boutiques here and foreign brand-name products and shoe stores can be found in abundance. In addition to its shops, Myeong-dong contains a variety of financial institutions such as banks, stock and investment companies.
