The main theme of this congress is “Ecology in a Changing World.” As the country wired in arguably the best internet system in the world, we are preparing one of the most high-tech equipped congresses in the history of INTECOL. Seoul is located within one of the world’s most dynamic and intellectual cultures. With many world-renowned speakers and delegates from all over the world, VIII International Congress of Ecology will provide you with valuable opportunities to enhance your career as well as chances to exchange new ideas and valuable insights. At this congress more than 2,000 papers in various ecological areas will be presented by researchers, administrators, industrial managers and other ecology-related personnel. We have arranged a variety of exciting and entertaining social gatherings and tour programs, which, we believe, will make your stay more enjoyable and fruitful. The congress will also provide excellent opportunities to experience Korean culture as well as to witness ecological studies and hot spots in Korea. Please do not miss the chance to feel and see everything this congress can offer. I look forward to seeing you all in Seoul in August 2002. Prof. Dr. Byung-Sun Ihm Vice President of INTECOL Chair, Local Organizing Committee 3 Invitation from INTECOL President At the beginning of the 21st Century ecological issues have never been more important, both at a global scale and at a national level. The international congresses of ecology provide important fora to learn more about these issues, to discuss recent advances in ecological science, and to highlight deficiencies in our knowledge which we urgently need to address. The VIII Congress in Seoul, South Korea provides an important opportunity for ecologists to continue the advancement of our science, and to learn at first hand of the many pressing problems that we need to address. On behalf of the Board of INTECOL, I urge as many of you as possible to attend this congress and to contribute to its success. Those of us like me, who have been fortunate enough to enjoy the hospitality of the Ecological Society of Korea in the past, know that we can look forward to a well organised congress full of good science and most rewarding and enjoyable excursions and social events. I am looking forward to the Congress a great deal, and I hope to see many of you in Seoul supporting our Korean colleagues, continuing the advancement of our most important science, renewing old friendships and making many new ones.
