Junior Senior 18 - 20 Oct 24 - 27 Oct 2019 JUNIOR SENIOR 18 - 20 OCT 24 - 27 OCT PROGRAMME @stithians www.mycomlink.co.za facebook.com/stithians INSPIRING EXCELLENCE MAKING A WORLD OF DIFFERENCE WELCOME FROM THE RECTOR St Stithians College is delighted to host our 26th Saints Water Polo Invitational this year, continuing a truly remarkable legacy. On behalf of the schools of St Stithians, I welcome players, coaches, officials, parents and supporters to two festive weekends of water polo, first the Prep Schools and then the Colleges and High Schools. May you enjoy our hospitality and leave with good memories. We look forward to the celebration of all the best that this sport has to offer. Organising and administering the Saints Invitational requires a truly dedicated and gifted team of staff, parent volunteers, officials and referees. Thank you, One and All, we really appreciate your dedication, enthusiasm, teamwork and commitment. Thank you, too, to our sponsors and vendors who contribute to the professionalism and great vibe around our Aquatics Centre. A total of 32 boys’ and girls’ teams take to the water in the Prep Festival, and 40 boys’ and girls’ teams in the College Festival. Enjoy this sporting extravaganza and a warm Saints welcome. Dr T A Nuttall Rector and Executive Head MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR As a mum of three Water Polo playing children, this is an exciting time to be involved in your children’s sporting careers. Perhaps your child is playing in their first Water Polo tournament at Saints as a Junior or this may be their very last one in the Senior tournament. The St Stithians Junior Water Polo tournament is for many the beginning of an exciting journey in the passionate world of Water Polo. Some players and parents have had a small taste of the future, and may have touched by it with involvement in Junior clubs, school teams or for a province. The youthful energy and enthusiasm of these athletes is entrancing and beautiful to observe. For those participating and playing in the Senior tournament, this is a time of playing against friends and rivals and further developing close relationships with players from other schools, countries and provinces. For some, this is the last Saints tournament they attend as they prepare for the end of Grade 11, moving onto Matric and then the move to life outside of school. Recognition must go to the huge amount of passion and commitment shown by everyone involved in creating these amazing tournaments. Enjoy Everyone! • Creativity Needs to Be Nurtured and En- Couraged in Children Today in Order for Them to Become Thought Pioneers Tomorrow
Issue #4 From the Helm “We live at a time where creative, original thinking is dangerously low. And yet we need exactly this thinking to solve our individual, community, organisational and global challenges and create a sustainable future.” - Tania de Jong (award-winning social entrepreneur). Based on this insight, one could argue that creativity needs to be nurtured and en- couraged in children today in order for them to become thought pioneers tomorrow. Developing creative thinkers may be the solution to many of the problems our world faces today. They see the world in new ways and find hidden patterns to unrelated phenomenon. “Creativity is a skill that can be developed and a process that can be managed. Creativity begins with a foundation of knowledge, learning a discipline, and mastering a way of thinking”, taken from a study on The Effectiveness of Creativity Training by George Land. It requires practice and a supportive environment in which to flourish. Every child has the potential to be creative and the school curriculum needs to provide opportunities for pupils to explore and enhance their creativity. Education is an exciting journey and imagination, originality and resourcefulness are vital in this journey. Schools need to encourage experimentation and allow for failure. Children need to be brave and take risks. In the lower grades, the focus needs to be more on process and less on results. Creative children are flexible, adapt more easily to change and have the ability to turn challenges into opportunities. Carol-Anne Conradie Head of Junior Primary Creativity College Champions Arin Pincus We congratulate Arin Pincus on the wonderful achievement of having her short story “My Mother” being published in the 2017 edition of English Alive.
