MELIUS CHRISTIANSEN ENDOWMENT FUNDWhite THE MISSION COMMITTEE The F. Melius Christiansen (FMC) Endowment Fund was established in 1996 by the (member status as of December 31, 2019) American Choral Directors Association of Minnesota (ACDA-MN) to guarantee a vibrant future for choral music in the state of Minnesota. Its mission is to provide Rolf Anderson Melanie Kjellberg financial support to Minnesota choral directors for professional development and Daniel Digre Jennifer Krinke Marie Spar Dymit Kathryn Larson graduate education, to encourage young musicians in the state of Minnesota to Rikka Estenson BlackKarla Miller pursue choral conducting as a career, to provide need-based financial support for Nancy Grundahl Mark Nelson, Chair students of ACDA-MN members who are selected for the ACDA-MN state honor Stephen Grundahl Bruce Phelps, Past Chair choir program, and to provide financial support for administration of the FMC Paula Holmberg Allycia Smith Endowment Fund Committee activities. Melius Christiansen (1871-1955), was a Norwegian immigrant who is considered the ‘father’ of a cappella singing in North America. THE F. MELIUS CHRISTIANSEN Christiansen founded the St. Olaf Choir in Northfield, Minnesota, and shaped it into ENDOWMENT FUND EMERITUS arguably the best-known collegiate choir in the world. The FMC Endowment Fund MEMBERS recognizes Christiansen’s inspirational contributions to the choral art that are still (member status as of December 31, 2019) evident today. Melius Christiansen, the father of a cappella choral singing in America and founder of the TOTAL INCOME $169,274.94 St. Olaf Choir. In addition, these choirs will perform the world premiere of a new piece commissioned for this event by noted Minnesota composer René EXPENSE Clausen, former conductor of The Concordia Choir- Moorhead. Administrative Operating Costs $17,842.37 Endowment Fund Scholarships featuring Summer Dialogue $2,870.00 The Augsburg Choir Student Conducting Workshop $1,546.00 The Concordia Choir-Moorhead Christus Chorus of Concordia University-St. Paul Student Symposium $526.07 The Gustavus Choir National Conference $4,115.32 St. Olaf Choir Graduate Study $10,000.00 National Lutheran Choir Alice T. Larsen Memorial Scholarship $1,500.00 Honor Choir $3,134.00 All proceeds from the event will be used to ensure the vitality of choral music in Minnesota Next Direction $ 600.00 by providing financial support to promising Total Scholarships $24,291.39 Minnesota choral directors and their students wishing to further their professional training and TOTAL EXPENSE $42,133.76 experience. Graduate Study Scholarship Recipient FMC ENDOWMENT • 2017 ANNUAL REPORT 3 FMC SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAMS 2019 SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENTS ACDA-MN’s F. Melius Christiansen Endowment Fund provides need-based financial support for students of ACDA-MN members who are selected for the ACDA-MN state honor choir program each year to help pay honor choir registration fees. Scholarships were awarded to 26 students in 2019. SUMMER DIALOGUE SCHOLARSHIPS Scholarships to attend this four-day ACDA-MN annual professional development conference are available to conductors with up to two years of experience and to conductors with any length of experience who have never attended a previous Summer Dialogue. The 2019 Summer Dialogue scholarship recipients were: Peter Fourniea - Rochester Lourdes Schools Matt Kiminski - student graduate, Saint John’s University Kyung Ko - Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, Circle Pines; Caritas Leah Mockenhaupt - Sartell Middle School Kennedy Niska - student graduate, Concordia College-Moorhead Dylan Sauder - student graduate, University of Northwestern-St. Paul Nathan Thelen - Staples-Motley Public Schools Vinay Thomas - graduate student, University of Minnesota-Twin Cities (L-R front) Kyung Ko, Leah Mockenhaupt, Kennedy Niska, Peter Fourniea (L-R back) Vinay Thomas, Nathan Thelen, Dylan Sauder, Matt Kiminski SUMMER DIALOGUE STUDENT CONDUCTOR WORKSHOP SCHOLARSHIPS Scholarships were awarded to nine Minnesota collegiate students for participation in a two-day conducting workshop during ACDA-MN’s Summer Dialogue conference.
