The MSU Wind Symphony travels to Italy for a performance tour celebrating the legacy of the MSU Bands and to honor Leonard Falcone, longtime Director of Bands from 1927-1967, a native of Italy. RECORDINGS King Mangoberry: Music of Ricardo Lorenz The Michigan State University Wind Symphony, under the direction of Kevin Sedatole, is excited to announce their newest recording featuring the music of MSU faculty composer Ricardo Lorenz. This recording features new recordings of Lorenz’s King Mangoberry: Five Allegories for Wind Symphony, which take a colorful and introspective look at diversity, and his innovative Pataruco: Concerto for Venezuelan Maracas, which features the virtuosic performance of maraca soloist Manuel Alejandro Rangel in a brilliant transcription by recent DMA wind conducting student, Travis Higa. The recording concludes with a live performance of El Muro (The Wall) from the MSU Wind Symphony’s concert at the 2009 CBDNA National Conference held at The University of Texas at Austin. As Cormac Cannon, of the University of South Carolina, writes in his foreword: “to experience the music of Ricardo Lorenz is to enter an inimitable sound world governed by confounding rhythm, inhabited by rich color, with a brilliant and at times foreboding formal landscape.” We hope you check out this latest MSU Wind Symphony recording and enjoy the music of Ricardo Lorenz.     THE UNITED STATES ARMY FIELD BAND The Legacy of J OHN P. P AY N T E R Washington, D.C. “The Musical Ambassadors of the Army” rom Boston to Bombay, Tokyo to Toronto, The United States Army Field Band has been thrilling audiences of all ages for more than half a century. As F the premier touring musical representative for the United States Army, this internationally-acclaimed organization travels thousands of miles each year presenting a variety of music to enthusiastic audiences throughout the nation and abroad. Through these concerts, the Field Band keeps the will of the American people behind the members of the armed forces and supports diplomatic efforts around the world. The Concert Band is the oldest and largest of the Field Band’s four performing components. This elite 65-member instrumental ensemble, founded in 1946, has per- formed in all 50 states and 25 foreign countries for audiences totaling more than 100 million. Tours have taken the band throughout the United States, Canada, Mexico, South America, Europe, the Far East, and India. The group appears in a wide variety of settings, from world-famous concert halls, such as the Berlin Philharmonie and Carnegie Hall, to state fairgrounds and high school gymnasiums. The Concert Band regularly travels and performs with the Soldiers’ Chorus, together presenting a powerful and diverse program of marches, overtures, popular music, patriotic selections, and instrumental and vocal solos. The organization has also performed joint concerts with many of the nation’s leading orchestras, including the Boston Pops, Cincinnati Pops, and Detroit Symphony Orchestra.

    FALL 2011 ChoruspondenceVirginia Lynn Vann, Editor The Memphis Symphony Chorus Hello Everyone! Letter From the Editor My name is Ginny and I am the new editor of Choruspondence! It was an honor to have been asked by Lisa to take over Choruspondence. I also want to thank Martha for her dedication to this Newsletter for the past two seasons, and showing me the ropes as well! I just I thought since I am new to this, I would take the time to introduce myself! I am 29 years old and I was born and raised right here in Memphis. I graduated from Ridgeway High School in 2000 and attended The University of Tennessee, Knoxville (Go Vols!). I came back to Memphis in March 0f 2009 to help my mother who was diagnosed with Ovarian Cancer. I have always loved to sing even as a young child and missed it after not singing anywhere for over a year. When I found out about the Memphis Symphony Chorus, my mother was the first person to encourage me to audition. This is my third season with this great organization and I have loved meeting new people and singing fabulous songs. When my mother passed in the summer of 2010, I couldn’t wait to get back to rehearsals with the chorus and the chorus is one of the reasons I was able to make it this past year. I really don’t know what I would have done without the incredible people in the chorus and I thank each and every one of you for a wonderful two years so far! I want to welcome all the new people to the Memphis Symphony Chorus and I hope your first season in the chorus will be as amazing as my first season was for me! If you are finding it difficult to keep up, don’t get discouraged.

The material is largely derived from “The Star-Spangled Banner.” One need not attribute an excess of patriotic fervor in the composer as a source for this optimistic homage to our national anthem; Carolyn Bremer, a passionate baseball fan since childhood, drew upon her feelings of happy anticipation at hearing the anthem played before ball games when writing her piece.

    Founded in 1874 by Norwegian Lutheran immi- grants, St. Olaf is a nationally ranked liberal arts college located in Northfield, Minnesota, approximately 70 km south of the Twin Cities of Minne- apolis and St. Paul, the largest metropolitan area in the upper Midwest.
