1 Where Is Calvary? Mark 15:22 / 9-20-17 / Wed 1 WHERE IS CALVARY? MARK 15:22 / 9-20-17 / WED INTRODUCTION A. All four gospels give the name of the place Jesus was crucified. 1. Three call it “Golgotha”—Mark 15:22 (Matt. 27:33; John 19:17) 2. All four say it was “the place of the skull.” a. “Golgotha” is an Aramaic word for “a bare skull”. b. Our English version is a transliteration of this Aramaic word. Cleve Haley ! 9/19/2017 6:25 AM c. Only Luke calls it “Calvary” in the KJV.—Luke 23:33 KJV Comment [1]: B. What other clues does the Bible give? 1. First, it was outside the city—John 19:20 and Hebrews 13:12. 2. Second, it was near a well-traveled road—Matt. 27:39; Mark 15:21, 29-30. 3. Third, it was probably on a hill because it was visible from a distance—Mark 15:40. 4. Fourth, it was near a garden that had a new tomb—John 19:41. I. THE TRADITIONAL SITE IS THE CHURCH OF THE HOLY SEPULCHRE. A. This church has a long standing tradition dating back to the time of Constantine, the first Roman Emperor to profess Christianity (A.D. 325). B. According to that tradition, Constantine sent his mother, Helena, to Jerusalem in A.D. 326 to locate holy sites of the Christian faith. C. In 135 A.D. Christians in Judea revolted against Roman rule. The Emperor at that time was Hadrian. He subsequently ordered a temple to Venus also known as Aphrodite be built over Golgotha. This is where Helena was told that Calvary was. D. She ordered the pagan temple demolished and uncovered a tomb said to be that of Christ. In addition a rocky outcrop was also uncovered and identified as Golgotha. E. A church was built over this site in 335 A.D. and is the forerunner of The Church of the Holy Sepulchre. F. The church today is inside the walls of Jerusalem and scripture says Jesus was crucified outside the city. However, many archeologists believe in Jesus’ day the church was outside of the city walls and a second wall was later built enclosing it inside the city. 2 II. GORDAN’S CALVARY IS THE OTHER POSSIBLE SITE OF GOLGOTHA. A. In 1842 a German theologian named Otto Thenius declared that the rocky knoll north of the Damascus Gate leading out of Jerusalem was the actual Golgotha. B. In 1882 or 1883, British Major General Charles George Gordon endorsed this view and the site now bears his name. C. The location, sometimes called “Skull Hill” is beneath a cliff which contains two large sunken holes, which Gordon identified as resembling the eyes of a skull. D. Nearby is an ancient rock-cut tomb known today as “The Garden Tomb” which Gordon proposed was Jesus’ tomb. E. The problem with the Garden Tomb is that scripture says Jesus was buried in a new tomb (John 19:41), but The Garden Tomb has been dated to the 8th or 7th century B.C. whereas the tomb in the Church of the Holy Sepulchre is said to be from the time of Christ. F. Another controversy is the definition of “skull” in the word Golgotha and Calvary. 1. Does it refer to a face? 2. Does it refer to the top of a skull? .

  • PSALM 16: Gethsemane, Gabbatha, Golgotha, the “Garden Tomb,” and the Glory
PSALM 16: Gethsemane, Gabbatha, Golgotha, the “Garden Tomb,” and the Glory Gordon Franz Introduction On occasions I teach a class on Christian Apologetics. The first assignment I give the students is to read through the entire Book of Acts and note each encounter that believers in the Lord Jesus Christ have with the unsaved in the book. The students are to make a list with: (1) the Christians who are doing the witnessing, (2) the unbelievers bring witnessed to, (3) what the apologetics are that the believers are using, (4) and what the response of the unsaved is to their message. The two main apologetics used by the Early Church in the Book of Acts are: first, the bodily resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ; and second, the fulfillment of Bible prophecy. Psalm 16 is quoted on two occasions in the Book of Acts in order to demonstrate that the bodily resurrection of the Lord Jesus was the fulfillment of this psalm, predicted almost a thousand years before it happened. The first time the psalm is quoted is in Acts 2, Peter’s sermon on the day of Shavuot (Pentecost). The second time it is quoted is in Acts 13 when the Apostle Paul preached in the synagogue of Psidia Antioch on his first missionary journey. Superscription The superscription of Psalm 16 reads, michtam le David. The verbal root for the word “michtam” is to inscribe, to engrave, or write, like on a stele. One gets the impression of an inscription on a victory stele. A stele is an upright stone slab or pillar that has an inscription or some kind of design on it that serves as a monument for propaganda purposes or for veneration.

  • Easter: the Garden Tomb

  • The Garden Tomb the Rev
The Garden Tomb THE REv. M. L. LOANE, M.A., Vice-Principal, Moore Theological College, Sydney. T is perhaps impossible to locate with final certainty the actual sepul· I chre or even the burial ground where the body of Christ was laid after its removal from the Cross. For centuries many people through out Christendom have venerated the Church of The Holy Sepulchre as the site. To this day, most churches--the Roman and the Russian, the Greeks and the Copts, the Armenian and the Ethiopian-cling to the traditional belief and rank this spot first among the Holy Places. Few indeed save members of the Reformed Churches would dare to think otherwise. But despite every endeavour to remove it. one insuperable objection remains. It is impossible to see how the site occupied by The Church of The Holy Sepulchre could ever have been outside the city walls. The most recent excavations in 1938 severely diminish any likelihood of a satisfactory answer to this problem. It has been found that exactly underneath the Damascus Gate there stood the gate of an older wall, possibly that of Nehemiah's wall. At all events, this discovery means that almost beyond doubt the walls of the city in Gospel days enclosed the traditional site of the Tomb of Christ. That fact destroys the value of the tradition. However, within the last sixty years there has been a growing body of opinion among Evangelical believers in favour of another site known as The Garden Tomb. Its discovery was due to General. Gordon, who was stationed in Palestine for two or three years prior to his fatal expedition to the Sudan.
