  • Koel Chatterjee Phd Thesis
Bollywood Shakespeares from Gulzar to Bhardwaj: Adapting, Assimilating and Culturalizing the Bard Koel Chatterjee PhD Thesis 10 October, 2017 I, Koel Chatterjee, hereby declare that this thesis and the work presented in it is entirely my own. Where I have consulted the work of others, this is always clearly stated. Signed: Date: 10th October, 2017 Acknowledgements This thesis would not have been possible without the patience and guidance of my supervisor Dr Deana Rankin. Without her ability to keep me focused despite my never-ending projects and her continuous support during my many illnesses throughout these last five years, this thesis would still be a work in progress. I would also like to thank Dr. Ewan Fernie who inspired me to work on Shakespeare and Bollywood during my MA at Royal Holloway and Dr. Christie Carson who encouraged me to pursue a PhD after six years of being away from academia, as well as Poonam Trivedi, whose work on Filmi Shakespeares inspired my research. I thank Dr. Varsha Panjwani for mentoring me through the last three years, for the words of encouragement and support every time I doubted myself, and for the stimulating discussions that helped shape this thesis. Last but not the least, I thank my family: my grandfather Dr Somesh Chandra Bhattacharya, who made it possible for me to follow my dreams; my mother Manasi Chatterjee, who taught me to work harder when the going got tough; my sister, Payel Chatterjee, for forcing me to watch countless terrible Bollywood films; and my father, Bidyut Behari Chatterjee, whose impromptu recitations of Shakespeare to underline a thought or an emotion have led me inevitably to becoming a Shakespeare scholar.

  • The Country and the City the Perception of the Nri in Indian Cinema
INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF ENGLISH LANGUAGE, LITERATURE AND TRANSLATION STUDIES (IJELR) A QUARTERLY, INDEXED, REFEREED AND PEER REVIEWED OPEN ACCESS INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL http://www.ijelr.in (Impact Factor : 5.9745 (ICI) KY PUBLICATIONS REVIEW ARTICLE ARTICLE Vol. 5. Issue.2., 2018 (April-June) THE COUNTRY AND THE CITY THE PERCEPTION OF THE NRI IN INDIAN CINEMA NAYANA GEORGE MA English (2017-2019) The English and Foreign Languages University, Hyderabad Email: [email protected] ABSTRACT This paper seeks to explore and relate the notions of the country and the city as given in the works of Raymond Williams, particularly The Country and the City and Keywords, to the Bollywood film Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge (Aditya Chopra, 1995), among a few others. This film marked a turning point in Bollywood on a variety of fronts, but especially in the way the Non-Resident Indian came to be perceived and understood. The ideas elaborated in the twenty-fourth chapter, “The New Metropolis”, of The Country and the City resonates in the way the distinctions between the country and the city are expanded on a global scale when the underdeveloped countries— which in this particular case, is restricted to India— are seen as the countryside to the city that is the developed countries. Keywords: Raymond Williams, The Country and the City, Keywords, Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge, Bollywood, Indian Cinema.. Introduction Who is the NRI in Bollywood? The term “Non-resident Indian” or NRI is commonly used to describe people of Indian origin living overseas. In India, the NRI, like the Indian film industry, has made a marked transition in the past two decades from “being configured as an errant native seduced by the wealth and glamour of the West, at the expense of Indian values, to being an icon of the desirable cosmopolitan Indian citizen straddling the globe”.

It is surprisingly related today. The main theme of Shakespeare’s work is ‘LOVE’- ‘the blind fool’. He indirectly acknowledges there may be obstacles in true love and urges to marry with true ‘mind’ rather than merely two people. This love is a bold subject matter that has always lacked rules and always attracts controversy - specially within the strict norms of Asian Culture. These various challenges and obstacles make multistory-love-complex silently. Cinema woos audiences by offering this emotion. Modern Indian Cineme is already an indestructible massive field of art work which has been successfully taken the extract of the Shakespearean drama to serve the common. The literary works of Shakespeare reinvigorate uncountable people of the world. The unique excellence of Bard’s ‘violent delights’ and ‘violent ends’; excessive passion and love full of zeal; jealousy and romance; greed for empowerment and assassination; laughter and satire; aesthetic sensibility and of course the plot construction both in comedy and tragedy- are all time favourite to Bollywood screen.

In broader terms, this lecture course also furnishes an introduction to the culture and history of modern Hindi-language cinema, the study of modern Indian history, some of the broader theoretical literature on nationalism and patriotism, and the study of popular culture. The use of films and visual material in the study of history has become increasingly popular over the course of the last three decades; however, this course does not view cinema merely an as instrument for the study of Indian history. Popular cinema, this lecture presumes, is an intrinsically interesting subject of inquiry, even if Indian scholars have come to this realization long after the Indian public had already declared its unmitigated affection for the movies.
