The ecosystem of the slopes of Mount Merapi is mountain tropical forest which is frequently affected by volcanic activities. The dynamics of the volcano affect the diversity and abundance of orchids in the ecosystem. Tritis is an area included in the Turgo Hill of the southern slope of Mount Merapi and is under the management of Mount Merapi National Park. The ecosystem in Tritis area classified as lower mountain forest and it has been affected by Mount Merapi eruption. This study aimed to do an inventory of orchid species in Tritis to know the diversity and abundance of orchids that exist in this area. -

Box 9514, 2300 RA Leiden, The Netherlands SUMMARY A phylogenetic analysis of subtribe Coelogyninae (Epidendroideae, Orchidaceae) is performed based on 41 macromorphological and 4 anatomical characters scored from 43 taxa in Coelogyninae (27 Coelogyne species and 13 representatives of other genera) and three outgroups from Bletiinae and Thuniinae. The results from this analysis are analysed together with an earlier constructed molecular data set for the same species. All datasets confirm the monophyly of the Coelogyninae. Coelogyne appears to be polyphyletic, with species falling in at least two different clades. Key characters for generic and sectional delimitation were mapped on the total evidence tree and a comparison of their states within the various groups in Coelogyninae is used for a discussion of evolutionary polarity. Trichome type, presence of stegmata, inflorescence type, number of flowers per inflorescence, persistence of floral bracts, presence of sterile bracts on the rhachis, ovary indu- mentum, petal shape, presence and shape of lateral lobes of hypochile, number of keels on the epichile and presence of a fimbriate margin on the epichile appear to be good characters for defining major clades in Coelogyninae. The number of leaves per pseudobulb, size of the flowers, shape of the lip base and petals and presence of stelidia and calli show many reversals. The total evidence phylogeny is compared with traditional classifications of Coelogyne and Coelogyninae. -

Two private libraries, Benjamin Singer’s (which he donated to the American Orchid Society) and Joseph Arditti’s (its future is yet to be decided, it may be donated to an academic or scientific institutions or sold), served as primary sources for this list. However other sources were also used. The use of multiple sources increased the number of books which are listed but may have introduced errors or imperfections for following reasons. One and the same book may have been listed under different names erroneously. Names of authors may have been misspelled. When books have more than one author, the order of authors may have been presented differently in different lists and/or one or more names may have been omitted, added or misspelled. A book may have been published under different names in more than one country. Books are sometimes published by one publisher in one country and another in a different one. Spelling errors in different lists Translations Different editions Lack of information Conventions used in spelling names like “de” and “van.” Erroneous assumptions regarding Chinese surnames. The Chinese traditions is to list surname first, as for example, Yam Tim Wing which may end up incorrectly as Wing, Y. T. in some lists compiled in the West and correctly as T. W. Yam in others. This study aims to: 1) identify the diversity of species of wild orchids in trade in Nepal; 2) study the chain of commercialization from collector to client and/or export; 3) map traditional knowledge and medicinal use of orchids; and 4) integrate the collected data to propose a more sustainable approach to orchid conservation in Nepal. Methods: Trade, species diversity, and traditional use of wild-harvested orchids were documented during field surveys of markets and through interviews. Trade volumes and approximate income were estimated based on surveys and current market prices. Orchid material samples were identified to species level using a combination of morphology and DNA barcoding. Results: Orchid trade is a long tradition, and illegal export to China, India and Hong Kong is rife. Estimates show that 9.4 tons of wild orchids were illegally traded from the study sites during 2008/2009. A total of 60 species of wild orchids were reported to be used in traditional medicinal practices to cure at least 38 different ailments, including energizers, aphrodisiacs and treatments of burnt skin, fractured or dislocated bones, headaches, fever and wounds. -

Penelitian dilakukan di dua lokasi antara lain di dalam Griya Anggrek yang dibagi menjadi 4 titik sampling dan di luar Griya Anggrek yang dibagi menjadi 3 titik sampling. Setiap titik sampling dibuat 3 plot dengan ukuran 10 m x 10 m. Manfaat dari penelitian ini adalah untuk menganalisis perbandingan keanekaragaman Orchidaceae yang terdapat di dalam Griya Anggrek dan sekitarnya pada Kebun Raya Bogor. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa di kawasan Kebun Raya Bogor keanekaragaman tumbuhan anggrek yang berada di kawasan Griya Anggrek memiliki keanekaragaman yang lebih tinggi daripada diluar kawasan Griya Anggrek. -

Orchid Research Newsletter No. 73 January 2019 Hermann Sleumer (1906–1993), the eminent German botanist who worked for many years at the Rijksherbarium in Leiden, sometimes told an anecdote about Rudolf Schlechter (1872–1925), whom he had witnessed as a young student in Berlin about 1925. Schlechter, the foremost orchid taxonomist of his time, was by then seriously ill with malaria, which he had probably caught during his expeditions in New Guinea almost two decades earlier. To alleviate the symptoms, Schlechter had taken to drinking large quantities of beer, and, according to Sleumer, he would sometimes complain, "It's already noon and I haven't done anything for eternity yet [Schon zwölf Uhr und noch nichts für die Ewigkeit getan]." This meant that he had not yet described a new species that day and that he was getting too inebriated to do so after lunch time. Sadly, the malaria killed him soon afterwards. Schlechter didn't live long enough to witness how the herbarium of the Botanical Museum in Berlin went up in flames in March 1943 after a bombing raid, destroying his first set of collections and his archives. Sleumer used to tell how he found his own typewriter half molten in the rubble afterwards. On a lighter note, he once told Jaap Vermeulen (pers. comm.) that Schlechter had a very pretty daughter whom he wished he had married. But enough Leiden folklore—I wanted to draw attention to Schlechter's attitude towards describing new species. It sounds like an almost pompous thing to say: doing something for eternity. -
