Book of Proceedings AIESEP 2011 International Conference 22-25 June 2011 University of Limerick, Ireland Moving People, Moving Forward 1 INTRODUCTION We are delighted to present the Book of Proceedings that is the result of an open call for submitted papers related to the work delegates presented at the AIESEP 2011 International Conference at the University of Limerick, Ireland on 22-25 June, 2011. The main theme of the conference Moving People, People Moving focused on sharing contemporary theory and discussing cutting edge research, national and international policies and best practices around motivating people to engage in school physical education and in healthy lifestyles beyond school and into adulthood and understanding how to sustain engagement over time. Five sub-themes contributed to the main theme and ran throughout the conference programme, (i) Educating Professionals who Promote Physical Education, Sport and Physical Activity, (ii) Impact of Physical Education, Sport &Physical Activity on the Individual and Society, (iii) Engaging Diverse Populations in Physical Education, Physical Activity and Sport, (iv) Physical Activity & Health Policies: Implementation and Implications within and beyond School and (v) Technologies in support of Physical Education, Sport and Physical Activity. The papers presented in the proceedings are not grouped by themes but rather by the order they were presented in the conference programme. The number that precedes each title matches the number on the conference programme. We would like to sincerely thank all those who took the time to complie and submit a paper. Two further outlets of work related to the AIESEP 2011 International Conference are due out in 2012. -
Essays on Golden Age Spanish Literature for Geoffrey L. Stagg in Honor of His Eighty-Fifth Birthday

Newark, DE: Juan de la Cuesta, 1999. xx + 258 pp. ISBN: 0-936388-83-8. Geoffrey L. Stagg is duly honored in this latest addition to the handsome “homenajes” series published by Juan de la Cuesta. The collection of essays edited by Ellen M. Anderson an d Amy R. Williamsen contains some truly excellent contributions to Golden Age studies across the board. As most readers of this journal probably know, Stagg’s research focuses on the Cervantine œuvre, and he served as an Associate Editor for Cervantes since the journal’s inception until the date of publication of this Festschrift in celebra- tion of his eighty-fifth birthday. However, the editors’ introduction makes quite clear the fact that Stagg is nothing less than a Renaissance man—trained in both arms and letters—and this diversity is reflected through the fine selection of scholars and articles that make up this academic accolade. In addition to sketching Stagg’s academic career in their introduction to this homage, the editors also bring to light the human touch of this humani- tarian. His diplomatic manner with his students, his very special relationship with his wife, and the couple’s generous dinner parties with colleagues and students all paint an intimate portrait that gives a sense of wholeness to this academic tribute. The volume itself is divided into fou r sections. The first section, titled “Comparative Contexts,” contains three essays that “contribute to the under- standing of Spanish Renaissance and Baroque works in the light of the classi- cal letters and the Elizabethan literature Stagg knows and loves so well” (xvii). -

All rights reserved Multiperspectivism in the Novels of the Spanish Civil War Hans Lauge Hansen, Aarhus University Since the turn of the millennium, Spanish society has been engaged with an intense public and political debate about the Civil War and the post-war period. The number of publications has exploded within all genres, and narrative fiction clearly participates in the negotiation of the cultural memory of this period. Taking its point of departure in Todorov’s concept of restorative narratives, this article investigates whether contemporary Spanish novels continue a Manichaean division between ‘us’ and ‘them’, and whether it is possible to detect a difference in narrative patterns before and after the turn of the millennium. Keywords: cultural memory, Spanish Civil War, restorative narrative, multi- perspectivism, Spain. Since the turn of the millennium, Spain has witnessed a renewed public and political debate about Spain’s history in the twentieth century which has focused particularly on the memory of the Civil War of 1936–1939 and the immediate post-war period. The number of publications dedicated to this issue has exploded, not only in historiographic discourse, but within all genres, including novels, biography and autobiography.1 Through dialogue with other social discourses, narrative fiction clearly participates in the construction of the cultural memory of a given society. But what is the nature of this involvement? This article engages this question by examining the change in narrative perspective in the contemporary Spanish novel and by discussing the possible cultural and social impact of this change. -

CHAPTER ONE GENDER STEREOTYPES AND SEXUAL TRANSGRESSIONS IN EARLY MODERN SPAIN AND PORTUGAL In common with the rest of early modern Europe, Spanish and Portuguese societies embraced clearly defined and demarcated gender identities by reproducing and embracing misogynistic stereotypes of male and female behaviour and appearance. Biblical and Aristotelian notions of women/ female bodies as imperfect versions of men/male bodies were widely accepted, even within medical circles. The noted Spanish physician Juan Huarte de San Juan (c.1529–1592), for example, argued in his widely-read Examen de ingenios para las ciencias (1575) that the essential physical characteristics of female bodies – a cold and moist temperature – enabled them to conceive and made them apt to bear children but also sty- mied their intellectual development and thus rendered them inferior to men.1 Overtly misogynistic attitudes can easily be found in the considerable literature relating to the proper education or conduct of women, most notably in works such as The Education of a Christian Woman, published in 1523 by humanist scholar Juan Luis Vives (1493–1540) and the very pop- ular The Perfect Wife by Fray Luis de León (1527–1591), published in 1583 and republished in no less than eight subsequent editions between 1583 and 1621. Women were normally represented as possessing weaker bodies and characters than men. Fray Luis de León, in particular, used his work to promote a rigid definition of the roles of men and women in society: God did not endow women either with the capacity necessary for important business dealings, or with the vigour indispensable for war and agriculture. -

The monster was a popular cultural phenomenon in sixteenth and seventeenth century Spain, appearing in a variety of scientific and literary genres. The monster was not just an extraordinary and unusual creature that elicited reactions of awe, wonder, and terror; it was also considered a sign from God that required careful interpretation to comprehend its meaning. The monster also embodies those characteristics that a society deems undesirable, and so by contrast, it shows what a society accepts and desires as part of its identity. In Lope de Vega’s (1562-1635) comedias, the playwright depicts characters who challenged the social, political, and religious conventions of his time as monsters. This study of Lope’s monsters intends to understand how and why Lope depicted these characters as monsters, and what they can tell us about the behaviors, beliefs, and traditions that Lope rejected as unacceptable or undesirable parts of the Spanish collective identity. -

Belton: To Hell with Christ!—the Gospel, According to Lazarillo: Parodia Sacra & Picaresque Signifying on the Novel as Genre (Under the direction of Jessica Lynn Wolfe) This thesis looks at an anonymously-authored work of early modern Spanish prose fiction, namely La vida de Lazarillo de Tormes, y de sus fortunas y adversidades (The Life of Lazarillo de Tormes: his Fortunes and Misfortunes). It makes the argument that Lazarillo, as a progenitor-text for the picaresque and novelistic traditions, initiates the use of intertextual signifying and the play of the parodic as an imaginative practice that will come to define twentieth century notions of the novel as a generic form with identifiable techniques. Major portions of this essay read parody as it functions within the text, both thematically and structurally; applying Bakhtinian notions of parodia sacra to discuss methodology, form and the construction of meaning within the work. iii ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS Throughout my work on this thesis, a number of people have been dedicated to providing support for its completion. In this vibrant world, Kabbalists intermingled with Sufis, and streams of wisdom flowed into Spain from both the far East and the North. This sixth in the Open Center’s series of conferences on the Western Esoteric Tradition will take place in Granada, the evocative and beautiful city lying below the snowy Sierra Nevada that, alone on the Iberian Peninsula, remained under Muslim control until the fateful year of 1492. -

Transatlantic Study Abroad Program in Europe Alcalá de Henares (Madrid), Spain The Consortium for Transatlantic Studies and Scholarships The mission of the Consortium for Transatlantic Studies and Scholarship (CTSS) seeks to encourage and promote a transatlantic perspective by providing faculty and students with a unique multicultural environment in order to aid their personal, professional, and academic development. Furthermore, we encourage collaboration within the consortium and among the member institutions in the area of academics, research, sharing of resources, and development of new programs, at all levels of the college/university: student, faculty, and administration. To that end, the CTSS has established a Study Abroad Program in Alcalá, Spain, which is held during the Fall and Spring Semesters. An annual Conference--open to faculty and students alike--is held every two years as a way to promote research, dialogue, and discussion among "scholars from across the world and from across the arts, humanities, and social sciences, [on] the nature and changing traits of Global Challenges through the lens of the transatlantic perspective. Program objectives To promote the knowledge and understanding of the historical, cultural, political, economic and social relations of both sides of the Atlantic Ocean by offering a diversity of courses suited for students with different interests, which will contribute to develop ideas, discussion and debate on subjects important to the transatlantic community. Block courses are taught in English. Develop students´ intercultural skills through different activities outside the classroom and cultural visits, in order to build up their attitudes, beliefs, communication styles and cultural competencies. Allow students to participate in other activities: volunteering, sports, service learning, internships, field trips. -

Anuario de Pregrado 2004 El discurso de las armas y las letras en La Araucana de Alonso de Ercilla. El discurso de las armas y las letras en La Araucana de Alonso de Ercilla. Rodrigo Faúndez Carreño* La mayor parte de los análisis críticos de que ha sido objeto La Araucana1 desde la publicación de su primera parte en 1569, se han desarrollado a partir de una visión parcial de ella. Los críticos literarios en el curso de los siglos han elogiado o vituperado sus méritos épicos a partir de una concepción aristotélica del género2 lo que ha tenido como consecuencia considerar tradicionalmente a la obra como un poema menor y defectuoso debido a que carece de un protagonista central, participa el autor en el relato y se introducen una serie de pasajes amorosos y bélicos ajenos al curso inicial de la narración: la guerra entre españoles y araucanos. Por su parte la crítica histórica se ha centrado en develar los perjuicios que cumple la introducción de elementos poéticos que invisten bajo atributos de héroes clásicos los rasgos y caracteres indígenas.3 Ante estas concepciones parciales propongo un estudio interdisciplinario que analiza los elementos literarios inmanentes de La Araucana desde una perspectiva historicista que rescata su diálogo (poético) con el medio social que condiciona el sentido de su discurso.4 Estas *Licenciado en Historia Universidad de Chile, abril del 2005. 1 Para el presente trabajo empleo la edición de La Araucana hecha por Isaísas Lerner, publicada en Madrid por la editorial Cátedra en 1999.
