Approximately 400 people walked and helped to raise $100,000 for the National Alliance for the Mentally 111 (NAMI) in Southwest Florida. NAMI’s membership is comprised of people with serious and persistent mental illnesses, as well as their parents, children; spouses, siblings and friends. The group’s goal is to provide research and services to people with mental illness. NAMI of Collier County has received the prestigious “Outstanding Affiliate of the Year” award from NAMI National and is one of the orig­ inal 12 affiliates to hold a NAMI Walk as a major fundraising campaign. “We appreciate and support the dedicat­ ed NAMI volunteers in Naples, Sanibel and throughout Southwest Florida who made the walk a success,” said Sanibel Captiva Trust Company founder and CEO S. Participants receive extra points for performing a DNA swab sam­ pling on the fish to advance research studies. Judges determine winners by a “photo finish” system that foregoes the traditional weigh-ins that can severely stress the fish. Furthermore, jig fishing is not allowed. “The fact that we are cooperating with the FWC to make this an environmentally sound competition and that proceeds from sponsors all benefit wildlife at the refuge made us decide we wanted to be a part of the competition again this year,” said Ryan Levi, DYS chief operating officer.
