The underground Army was created in order to facilitate the reestablishment of an independent Poland. The Army that was created, the AK, was in effect, an alliance organisation comprising, to varying degrees, members of all pro-independence underground groups. It was, in Lublin, to always suffer from internal stresses and strains, which were exaggerated by the actions of the region’s occupiers.

A small number of survivors returned to the town in 1945 in an attempt to rebuild there their Jewish way of life. In a short time, a number of them were killed. What I had found researching the circumstances of their deaths enabled me to grasp the actual scope of anti-Jewish violence in Podhale between 1945 and 1947 – a time when the region witnessed a major escalation of the ight – launched by the communist authorities – against members of the partisan unit ‘Błyskawica’ led by Józef Kuraś, nom de guerre ‘Ogień’. The most striking element of my indings was the way in which the Jewish victims of those violent acts were referred to: they remained anonymous and were described in mass terms. Their deaths were, and still are, rationalised with the stereotype of ‘Judaeo-Communism’.1 In my paper, I wish to challenge this approach by focusing 1 The article “Kto walczy z ‘Ogniem’” by Andrzej Gwiazda is a typical example of such thinking (www.niezalezna.pl, access 15 April 2015).

  • Summary of Doctoral Dissertation by Józef Forystek
SUMMARY OF DOCTORAL DISSERTATION BY JÓZEF FORYSTEK “HOME-ARMY AND POST-HOME-ARMY DIVERSION FORMATIONS IN THE AREA OF COMMUNES IN THE VICINITY OF RZESZÓW – OUTPOSTS “ŚWIERK” AND “GRAB” (1944-1947)” Several generations have passed since the end of the Second World War and the eventful period of 1944-1947 in the area of the so-called Little Homeland, the pre-war collective commune of Świlcza which was the area of operations of Home Army outposts codenamed “Świerk” [Spruce] (Trzciana–Świlcza) and “Grab” [Hornbeam] or “Grusza” [Pear Tree] (Głogów Małopolski). Despite that, the final history of the Home Army, in particular, the operations of armed underground forces and several smaller groups outside the formal structures of the Polish Underground State, especially in the period from the liberation of Rzeszów from under the German occupation, the ending of the summer offensive and setting the frontline along the Wisłoka River (August 1944) till the year 1947 (the amnesty), has not been fully told yet. As noted by Jan Łopuski, member of the General Headquarters of the Home Army District Rzeszów, this was not the time of clear-cut, black-and-white divisions into Poles fighting for independence and German invaders, which was characteristic of the preceding period of German occupation. The Polish underground soldiers of that time had to make morally challenging choices, considering, on the one hand, the loyalty pledged in the army oaths and, on the other hand, the yearning for normal life and participation in rebuilding the country from the destructions of war within the frames imposed by the “ally of our allies” in the system so foreign to Polish mentality.

  • The Polish – Soviet Confrontation in 1956 and the Attempted Soviet Military Intervention in Poland
EUROPE-ASIA STUDIES Vol. 58, No. 8, December 2006, 1285 – 1310 The Polish – Soviet Confrontation in 1956 and the Attempted Soviet Military Intervention in Poland KRZYSZTOF PERSAK In 1956, a deep political crisis developed in Poland. The power elite was paralysed by internal conflicts and public feelings were strongly anti-Soviet. The Kremlin viewed this situation with concern. On 19 October, the Soviet leadership sent a top-level delegation to Warsaw to prevent changes in the Politburo which they feared might lead to Poland’s secession from the Soviet bloc. Simultaneously, Soviet troops located in Poland started an advance towards Warsaw. After the dramatic talks between Khrushchev and Gomułka Soviet intervention was ceased but it took several more days before the Kremlin gave up an armed-intervention solution in Poland. It was China’s firm objection to it and the outbreak of the Hungarian Revolution that made Soviet military engagement in Poland impossible. FOR POLISH –SOVIET RELATIONS THE YEAR 1956 STARTED WITH TWO far-reaching events. The first event—of worldwide importance—was the Twentieth Congress of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union (CPSU), at which Nikita Khrushchev delivered the secret speech denouncing Stalin’s crimes. Soon after the first secretary of the Central Committee of the Polish United Workers’ Party (PUWP), Bolesław Bierut, died of a heart attack during a stay in Moscow. The thaw in Poland Khrushchev’s speech, broadly publicised in Poland, was a shock to communists, but raised hope for a rapid change among wide circles of society. Contrary to the author’s intentions, the report condemning Stalin’s ‘personality cult’ struck at the heart of the ruling system.
