  • Whitey Bulger and Prisoner Welfare - the Prindle Post a Requiem of Retribution at a Black Mass: Whitey Bulger and Prisoner Welfare
8/9/2021 A Requiem of Retribution at a Black Mass: Whitey Bulger and Prisoner Welfare - The Prindle Post A Requiem of Retribution at a Black Mass: Whitey Bulger and Prisoner Welfare By Rachel Robison-Greene - Nov 30, 2018 "554T9816" by Cliff licensed under CC BY 2.0 (Via Flickr). On October 31, 2018, crime boss Whitey Bulger was found beaten to death in a West Virginia prison. Bulger was infamous for racketeering, committing murder, and evading capture for 16 years. His place on the FBI’s most wanted list was second only to Osama Bin Laden. He was finally captured in 2011 at the age of 81. He was convicted for his crimes and sentenced to two consecutive life sentences, but served only six years before more than one fellow inmate beat him to death with a padlock stuffed inside a sock. Bulger was infamous for his crimes and was reasonably well known among the population at large. He was the motivation for Jack Nicholson’s character in Martin Scorsese’s The Departed and his life story was told in the 2015 film Black Mass starring Johnny Depp as Bulger. There were good reasons to think that Bulger might be at a greater risk of victimization while incarcerated than other prisoners. He made many enemies during his career as a mafia boss, and many of those enemies either went to prison themselves or had connections in the prison system. To make matters worse, Bulger was an FBI informant for 15 years, and prisoners don’t tend to be particularly fond of “snitches.” With these considerations in mind, prison administrators might have done well to think carefully about Bulger’s safety in prison.

BULGER MEMORANDUM AND ORDER ON DEFENDANT’S RENEWED MOTION FOR RECUSAL October 28 2012 STEARNS, D.J. Other than the identification of Jeremiah O’Sullivan as the member of the New England Organized Crime Strike Force who allegedly granted the defendant immunity for indictable criminal activity, defendant’s renewed motion raises no new issues of material fact or law, and will be DENIED for the same reasons as his earlier motion. Defendant has not connected any action of the Strike Force with regard to defendant to my tenure as a supervisory Assistant U.S. Attorney (AUSA), nor is there one. Nor is the court persuaded by defendant’s declaration that he might attempt to summons the undersigned judge as a witness. As the court has previously pointed out to counsel, a witness is only properly summoned to testify if he or she has something of relevance to say on a material issue. www.influencefilmclub.com Whitey: United States of America v. James J. Bulger Discussion Guide Director: Joe Berlinger Year: 2014 Time: 107 min You might know this director from: Hank: 5 Years from the Brink (2013) Under African Skies (2012) Paradise Lost 3: Purgatory (2011) Crude (2009) Metallica: Some Kind of Monster (2004) Book of Shadows: Blair Witch 2 (2000) Paradise Lost: The Child Murders at Robin Hood Hills (1996) Brother’s Keeper (1992) FILM SUMMARY James “Whitey” Bulger carved out a name for himself as a mastermind of the underworld, a ruthless murderer, gambler, drug dealer, and extortioner with a penchant for wrongdoing. Rising through the ranks of the Boston mob, contact with the FBI was inevitable. Rather than questioning his innocence as a devious criminal, WHITEY turns the camera on the American legal and justice system, unearthing corruption everywhere it points. The public’s decades long fascination with Bulger, both as a criminal and fugitive, was immense, something director Berlinger shared. As the FBI and Bulger prepared to come head to head in court in 2013, Berlinger met with the vast gang of characters connected to Bulger’s reign of crime: family members of murder victims, fellow mob members, the defence and prosecution, and journalists who have followed his career. A red thread emerges: no matter where one stands in the line of Bulger’s fire, no one considers him an innocent man. The question they all want answered: were FBI agents controlled by Bulger’s bribing reigns or was he a paid confidential informant? Coming in at 107 minutes, names and testimonies arrive at a fiery speed as one thing becomes crystal clear: the need to establish if Bulger was an informant or not.

  • 'Alleged' No More
13 Aug 2013 The Boston Globe Kevin Cullen ‘Alleged’ no more For the last two months, Whitey Bulger sat in Courtroom 11 at the Joe Moakley federal courthouse looking like a guy waiting for a bus. On Monday, it looked like that bus ran him over. To call the verdict a resounding defeat for Whitey would be an understatement. He didn’t get shut out, but given the size of the case against Whitey and how far back into history it reached, Whitey lost and lost big. As he spends the rest of his days waiting for his mortal coil to be wrapped up, maybe Whitey can tell himself how great it was that the jury didn’t believe Johnny Martorano’s tales about them taking out Indian Al and some other hoodlums who posed a threat to the Winter Hill Gang. Maybe in Whitey’s World, getting a “no finding” on the murder of Debbie Davis, the girlfriend of his partner in crime Stevie Flemmi, rates as some kind of victory. The only part of the indictment Whitey really objected to was the murders of Davis and Deborah Hussey, Flemmi’s stepdaughter. He didn’t care that much about the other 17 murders he was charged with. Whitey has spent decades carving out this phony narrative of him being a gangster with scruples. But gangsters with scruples don’t murder defenseless women, so he had to fight that. The jury couldn’t decide on Debbie Davis’s murder because it was only Flemmi’s word against Bulger, and Flemmi is a total degenerate who had sex with his stepdaughter when she was a young teenager.

The United States seeks review of a judgment awarding $1.15 million to the family and the estate of Louis Litif ("the Litif estate"), resulting from Litif's murder by James "Whitey" Bulger in 1980. Litif v. United States, 682 F. Supp. 2d 60 (D. Mass. 2010). The Litif estate cross-appeals, seeking an increase in the damage award. This case, like its companion case decided by us today ("Davis-Hussey") and others already decided,1 stems from FBI agents' sheltering of Bulger and his associate Stephen Flemmi over several decades.
