Wm. Imlay James Clerk To the Honorable, The Judges of the Court of Claims, of the United States.

YOUR Petitioner, Jesse Rogers, a resident of the township of Dover, in the County of Ocean (formerly in the County of Monmouth,) and State of New Jersey, aged eight-five years, most respectfully represents to your Honors, That your Petitioner is now a farmer in the said Township of Dover, in which occupation he has been engaged for the last thirty years; and that previously thereto he was a mariner, engaged in navigating vessels out of the waters of Tom's River and Barnegat Bay, in the then County of Monmouth, - now the County of Ocean, and State of New Jersey, - to New York, and other places. That, in the year of our Lord, one thousand eight hundred and ten, your Petitioner, then a resident of Dover township, aforesaid, was Master and sole owner of the schooner called "The Greyhound." - that the said schooner had one deck and two masts, and that her length was fifty-nine feet, her breadth eighteen feet six inches; her depth, five feet, and that she measured forty-six and 60.95 tons, and that she was a square sterned schooner, had no galleries, and no head. And your Petitioner further respectfully represents to your Honors that he has never before made application either to Congress, or to any of the Executive Departments of Government for any compensation for the burning of the said schooner and cargo, and that he has never received any remuneration for the same, either directly or indirectly. And your Petitioner further respectfully represents that the damage which your petitioner has sustained by the burning of the said schooner and cargo, as aforesaid, amounted at the time of the said burning, to at least the sum of two thousand dollars, and your Petitioner thinks, that in justice, he should be allowed that sum, together with interest on the same from the time of the said burning of the said schooner and cargo, up to the time of allowing this claim, if it might please your honors so to regard his claim. And your Petitioner respectfully requests your Honors to take the application under your consideration, and that a Commissioner may be appointed to take the evidence in the cause, and that the witnesses your Petitioner desires to have examined on his part, reside in the Counties of Ocean and Monmouth, in the State of New Jersey, and your Petitioner is now aged and infirm, and has always demeaned himself as a good citizen and is now much in want of means, and that your Petitioner is the sole owner of the claim above set forth.

[[Burnell ??]] whose genuine Signature appears above is and was at the time of signing the same a Justice of the Peace in and for said County, duly Commissioned and sworn that all his of official acts such are entitled to full faith and credit, and that the aforesaid county Court is a Court of Record, having general jurisdiction In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and affixed the Seal of Said Court at Toms River this fifteenth day of February AD 1856.

That your petitioner, from the year A. D. one thousand eight hundred and ten, up to the month of March, in the year eighteen hundred and thirteen, was engaged with the said schooner called "The Greyhound." as Master and owner, in carrying Cord Wood and Pine Lumber from Tom's River and Barnegat Bay, aforesaid, to New York. That, about the month of March, in the year eighteen hundred and thirteen, your Petitioner had his schooner freighted with Pine Cord-Wood and Pine Lumber, lying at anchor in Barnegat Bay, ready to sail to New York - that the said Wood and Lumber, were there worth from $100 to $200, and that a detachment of men under Commodore HARDY, then a naval officer of the British Government, fired the said schooner, and the said schooner, together with her cargo of Wood and Lumber, were then and there burned to the water's edge, and the masts, rigging, sails, and furniture of the said schooner were all then and there burned and destroyed, and by the said burning, the hull of the said schooner was greatly injured, and was almost worthless - and that your Petitioner was thereby thrown out of employ, and greatly injured in his business.
