Celebrities and Science 2010 Celebrities and science 2010 Each year at Sense About Science we review the odd science claims people in the public eye have made – about diets, cancer, magnets, radiation and more – sent in to us by scientists and members of the public. Many of these claims promote theories, therapies and campaigns that make no scientific sense. We ask scientists to respond, to help the celebrities realise where they are going wrong and to help the public to make sense of celebrity claims. As always, the review notes people in the public eye WHAT’S NEW IN THE 2010 REVIEW? who do make scientific sense. Celebrities and Science 2013 So here it is. Or rather, isn’t. There will be no Celebrities and Science review of 2013. No round up of celebrities’ misleading claims and none of the usual effort by scientists to work out the underlying misconceptions that gave rise to them. That’s not to say our file’s empty. In fact it is pretty full this year of examples people have alerted us to of silly diets and products and some more serious celebrity support for causes that fly in the face of evidence on cancer, autism, agriculture and much else. But the file is also full of responses and fuller than ever of examples of people in the public eye drawing attention to the importance of evidence on those subjects, and on others such as illegal drugs and wacky cures. We decided not to run the review this year because of some positive changes. At Sense About Science we like change. That’s what we exist for so in every part of our work we look for the moment when we are not needed and can move to other things. We published the Celebrities and Science review for seven years. Light hearted as they often were, the reviews have been more valuable than we ever looked for them to be... We revisited celebrity statements It reached the parts that science and learned some things. Sometimes rarely reached, especially back in 2006 we didn’t know whether a celebrity when it started. The NME, Chat magazine statement was wrong, and if it was, why, and BBC Radio One discussed whether or what the real picture was, and that was statements about radiation, vaccines or with an office full of people interested in the dangers of drinking milk were true.

  • Legitimation and Innovation in the Tibetan Buddhist Chöd Tradition
Making the Old New Again and Again: Legitimation and Innovation in the Tibetan Buddhist Chöd Tradition Michelle Janet Sorensen Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2013 © 2013 Michelle Janet Sorensen All rights reserved ABSTRACT Making the Old New Again and Again: Legitimation and Innovation in the Tibetan Buddhist Chöd Tradition Michelle Janet Sorensen My dissertation offers a revisionary history of the early development of Chöd, a philosophy and practice that became integral to all Tibetan Buddhist schools. Recent scholars have interpreted Chöd ahistorically, considering it as a shamanic tradition consonant with indigenous Tibetan practices. In contrast, through a study of the inception, lineages, and praxis of Chöd, my dissertation argues that Chöd evolved through its responses to particular Buddhist ideas and developments during the “later spread” of Buddhism in Tibet. I examine the efforts of Machik Labdrön (1055-1153), the founder of Chöd and the first woman to develop a Buddhist tradition in Tibet, simultaneously to legitimate her teachings as authentically Buddhist and to differentiate them from those of male charismatic teachers. In contrast to the prevailing scholarly view which exoticizes central Chöd practices—such as the visualized offering of the body to demons—I examine them as a manifestation of key Buddhist tenets from the Prajñāpāramitā corpus and Vajrayāna traditions on the virtue of generosity, the problem of ego-clinging, and the ontology of emptiness. Finally, my translation and discussion of the texts of the Third Karmapa Rangjung Dorjé (1284-1339), including the earliest extant commentary on a text of Machik Labdrön’s, focuses on new ways to appreciate the transmission and institutionalization of Chöd.
