The Vampire in European and American Culture Dr. Jeff Holdeman SLAV-T230 11498 (SLAV) (please call me Jeff) SLAV-T230 11893 (HHC section) GISB East 4041 Fall 2019 812-855-5891 (office) TR 4:00–5:15 pm Office hours: Classroom: GA 0009 * Tues. and Thur. 2:45–3:45 pm in GISB 4041 carries CASE A&H, GCC; GenEd A&H, WC * and by appointment (just ask!!!) * e-mail me beforehand to reserve a time * It is always best to schedule an appointment. [email protected] [my preferred method] 812-335-9868 (home) This syllabus is available in alternative formats upon request. Overview The vampire is one of the most popular and enduring images in the world, giving rise to hundreds of monster movies around the globe every year, not to mention novels, short stories, plays, TV shows, and commercial merchandise. Yet the Western vampire image that we know from the film, television, and literature of today is very different from its eastern European progenitor. Nina Auerbach has said that "every age creates the vampire that it needs." In this course we will explore the eastern European origins of the vampire, similar entities in other cultures that predate them, and how the vampire in its look, nature, vulnerabilities, and threat has changed over the centuries. This approach will provide us with the means to learn about the geography, village and urban cultures, traditional social structure, and religions of eastern Europe; the nature and manifestations of Evil and the concept of Limited Good; physical, temporal, and societal boundaries and ritual passage that accompany them; and major historical and intellectual periods (the settlement of Europe, the Age of Reason, Romanticism, Neo-classicism, the Enlightenment, the Victorian era, up to today).

  • Ben Salisbury
Craft / Geoff Barrow of Portishead with Ben Salisbury quite dry, quite traditional. I was expecting it might be like ‘The Kids from Fame’. But they weren’t, the vast majority of students wanted to be music teachers! The benefit was there was a brand new recording studio at Newcastle University, and there was only me and one other guy who were interested in using it, so we had the run of it. It was absolutely state-of-the- art, when samplers and digital stuff were just taking off. So that was really my introduction into composing. Music for Film and TV at Bournemouth in the early ’90s was a brilliant course, in that you had your own workstation. You were sat down, you had deadlines, and it was quite pressurised, so was actually quite similar to life as a commercial composer. Weirdly, that was probably exactly the same time Geoff [Barrow] was using samplers to make Portishead’s Dummy. What was your first real break? I came out of Bournemouth with a credit to my name, because I did music for a short film that went on to win an award, and was broadcast on Channel Four. It was directed by a guy called Ben Salisbury Miguel Sapochnik who I’ve worked with since on other short films. Now he directs episodes of DAVE ROBINSON meets the nature documentary composer Game of Thrones! One person, that’s all it took: one director who has his (laser) sights on sci-fi chose a bit of music I’d done for that film as temp music for his film about elephants and en Salisbury is a name you can expect Your father worked at the BBC Natural said, “Look, you’re very inexperienced, but to see more and more of on your History Unit: that must have been useful to we’ve got this music in there.

ABSTRACT THE FEAR OF THE KNOWN: HORROR MEDIA AND THE USE OF FEAR TO MAINTAIN POWER Dana Peterson, MA. Department of Sociology Northern Illinois University, 2018 Diane Rodgers, Director A new subgenre has begun emerging in the horror genre: “woke horror.” Texts within this subgenre reflect the increased awareness of injustices against minority groups in American society. Prior research on horror has long connected the fears presented onscreen with real-life social anxieties of the time. Utilizing an intersectional framework that is concerned with racial, gender, and sexual orientation minorities, I engaged in a discourse analysis of three woke horror texts from 2017: American Horror Story: Cult, The Handmaid’s Tale, and Get Out. Through multiple rounds of coding, I was able to uncover a variety of themes that distinguish who holds the power in these horror texts, who is subordinate, and how the new fears of the woke horror genre are used to control groups within the texts. The codes also revealed who in these texts are able to be the saviors of the rest of the subordinate group. The present study offers an important update to the literature on horror, both in the continuation of the connections between on-screen fears and real life, as well as an introduction to what is sure to continue to be a growing subgenre.
