In addition, any quotation or extract must include full attribution. 1 Molecular Phylogenetics of the Superfamily Curculionoidea (Insecta: Coleoptera) Conrad Paulus Dias Trafford Gillett March 2014 Thesis abstract This thesis examines higher-level evolutionary history within the superfamily Curculionoidea, the most speciose family-level taxon, which includes beetles commonly known as weevils. This is achieved using a phylogenetic approach incorporating the largest datamatrix yet employed for weevil molecular systematics, and includes an investigation into the prospect of obtaining short phylogenetically informative amplicons from archival museum specimens. Newly obtained DNA sequence data is analysed from a variety of mitochondrial and nuclear loci, including 92 mitogenomes assembled through the approach of next-generation sequencing of pooled genomic DNA. The resulting trees are used to test previous morphological- and molecular-based hypotheses of weevil relationships and classification schemes. Mitogenomic-derived trees reveal topologies that are highly congruent with previous molecular studies, but that conflict with some morphological hypotheses. Strong nodal support strengthens inferences into the relationships amongst most weevil families and suggests that the largest family, the Curculionidae, is monophyletic, if the subfamily Platypodinae is excluded. -

Altogether, the 1060 species and subspecies out of the 10 families are composed of 21 Anthribidae, 129 Apionidae, 3 Attelabidae, 847 Cur cu lio - ni dae, 7 Dryophthoridae, 9 Erirhinidae, 13 Nanophyidae, 3 Nemonychidae, 3 Raymondionymidae, and 25 Rhynchitidae. Further, 13 synanthropic, 42 introduced species as well as 127 species, solely known based on old records, are given. For all species their synonymous names used in Swiss litera- ture are provided. 151 species classified as doubtful for the Swiss fauna are listed separately. We performed Bayesian and Maximum Parsimony combined phylogenetic analyses with the main objective of testing higher-level relationships and the naturalness of the major Neotropical and Southern South American (Patagonia and Andes) tribes, including some members from other regions. We compiled a data matrix of 67 terminal units with 63 Entiminae species, as well as four outgroup taxa from Cyclominae, by 3522 molecular (from nuclear 18S rDNA and 28S rDNA, and mitochondrial 16S rDNA and COI gene sequences) and 70 morphological characters. The resulting trees recover a clade Entiminae with a monophyletic Cylydrorhinini and Premnotrypes branching off early. -

Yu. — Th e clonal structure of the populations of nine weevil species (family Curculionidae) from central Ukraine was analyzed. Clonal diversity varied extensively among studied species. Th e level of clonal variation of some species (Otiorhynchus ligustici, O. raucus, Liophloeus tessulatus) is high, within some other species (O. tristis, Tropiphorus micans) it is low. Th e constant heterozygosity of lot of genes has been demonstrated that it may be a proof of the hybrid origin of the studied weevil populations. Th e asymmetry of some obtained electrophoretic spectra was observed. Th is can be a consequence of their polyploid nature. Th e signifi cant interpopulation diff erentiation of most of the species studied was demonstrated. Introduction Th e phenomenon of parthenogenesis in natural populations of animals is known long ago (Avise, 2008). Parthenogenesis being an unusual method of inheritance is still widespread among animals (Simon et al., 2003). Th at phenomenon allows us to assume the evolutionary advantages of this reproduction mode. Th is problem is relevant for example for insects (Normark, 2003). In particular, parthenogenetic forms are known for weevils (Stenberg et al., 1997, 2000). -

Pachyrhinus is considered a minor pest of Pinus spp. Three species of Pachyrhinus are now recognized in North America: P. elegans (Couper, 1865), P. californicus (Horn, 1876), and P. cinereus (Casey, 1888). Pachyrhinus lateralis (Casey, 1888) and P. miscix (Fall, 1901) are considered synonyms of P. elegans. Pachyrhinus crassicornis (Casey, 1888) and P. albidus (Fall, 1901) are synonyms of P. cinereus. The previous synonymy of P. ferrugineus (Casey, 1888) with P. californicus was confirmed.
