  • Joe Torre Joe Torre Was Named Manager of the Los Angeles Dodgers on November 1, 2007, Becoming the 26Th Manager in Team History
Joe Torre Joe Torre was named manager of the Los Angeles Dodgers on November 1, 2007, becoming the 26th manager in team history. Prior to the joining the Dodgers, Torre spent the past twelve seasons as manager of the New York Yankees. In 2008, Torre led the Dodgers to the division title and the club won their first playoff series in 20 years. In becoming the 31st manager in Yankees team history, he joined Casey Stengel, Yogi Berra and Dallas Green as the fourth skipper to wear both Yankee and New York Met uniforms. Torre's Yankees made the playoffs every year under his tenure. He led the Yankees to 6 World Series appearances during the 12 year span, winning 4 World Series Championships, most recently in 2000. The 2000 title was the 26th overall for the Yankees, the most of any team in professional sports. They are just the third team to win four titles in five years, the other two also being Yankees teams. The Bronx Bombers captured four straight titles beginning in 1936 and later won five consecutive championships from 1949-53. The Yankees also became the first team since the Oakland Athletics from 1972-74 to win three straight world titles. Torre led the 1996 Yankees to their first World Series title since 1978. He was named Sportsman of the Year by The Sporting News and Co-American League Manager of the Year by the Baseball Writers Association of America. After a return to post-season competition in 1997, Torre led the Yankees to 114 wins during the 1998 regular season, an American League record, and a four-game sweep of the San Diego Padres in the 1998 World Series.

MLB.COM Phillips, Frazier, Hamilton are Gold Glove finalists By Mark Sheldon / MLB.com / [email protected] / @m_sheldon CINCINNATI -- Second baseman Brandon Phillips, third baseman Todd Frazier and center fielder Billy Hamilton were the three Reds named as finalists on Thursday for Rawlings National League Gold Glove Awards. Phillips is seeking his fifth Gold Glove Award after he was a winner previously in 2008, '10, '11 and '13. Frazier and Hamilton are after their first Gold Gloves. The winners will be announced at Nov. 10 at 7 p.m. ET on ESPN. The other finalists at second base this year are Dee Gordon from the Marlins and DJ LeMahieu of the Rockies. LeMahieu won the award in 2014, when Phillips was also a finalist. Hamilton was a finalist in 2014. This year, he's up against the Pirates' Andrew McCutchen and A.J. Pollock of the D-backs. Frazier, a first-time finalist, is joined by two-time winner Nolan Arenado of the Rockies and Matt Duffy of the Giants. Since 1957, Major League managers and coaches have been the sole voters for the awards to the best defensive players in baseball. Starting in 2013, however, voting results were calculated along sabermetric data to determine winners of the Gold Glove Awards. A committee of experts in baseball analytics and defensive measurement devised the SABR Defensive Index (SDI), which draws on and aggregates two types of existing defensive metrics: those derived from batted ball, location-based data, and those collected by from play-by-play accounts.

Atlanta Braves Clippings Friday, October 30, 2015 Braves.com Simmons vying for 3rd straight Gold Glove By Mark Bowman / MLB.com | @mlbbowman | October 29th, 2015 ATLANTA -- It has been easy to assume Andrelton Simmons might gain the same unique defensive distinction earned by fellow Curacao native Andruw Jones, who won 10 consecutive Rawlings Gold Glove Awards while he was playing for the Braves. Simmons has won a Gold Glove Award after each of his first two full seasons at the Major League level. But his bid for a third consecutive year will depend on how National League managers and coaches compared his defensive prowess to that possessed by San Francisco's Brandon Crawford and Miami's Adeiny Hechavarria. Simmons, Crawford and Hechavarria are the three finalists selected to win the Gold Glove for NL shortstops this season. The winners will be announced during a one-hour show that will air on ESPN on Nov. 10 at 7 p.m. ET. Each manager and as many as six coaches from every staff cast their votes in September, with the stipulation that they could not vote for their own players. This is the second year, Rawlings has used a sabermetric component to account for 25 percent of the vote selection total. Simmons led all NL shortstops in Defensive Runs Saved (25), Ultimate Zone Rating (17.3) and Fangraphs' Defensive Runs Above Average (23.9), which accounts for fielding runs and positional adjustment. Hechavarria had a slight advantage (17.7 to 17.5) over the Braves shortstop in the UZR/150 category. Since making his Major League debut during the 2012 season, Simmons has established himself as one of baseball's most exciting defensive players.
