Cincinnati Reds' Cincinnati Reds Press Clippings October 30, 2015 THIS DAY IN REDS HISTORY 1990 - The Reds visit the White House after winning the World Series title and are toasted by President George Bush. MLB.COM Phillips, Frazier, Hamilton are Gold Glove finalists By Mark Sheldon / MLB.com / [email protected] / @m_sheldon CINCINNATI -- Second baseman Brandon Phillips, third baseman Todd Frazier and center fielder Billy Hamilton were the three Reds named as finalists on Thursday for Rawlings National League Gold Glove Awards. Phillips is seeking his fifth Gold Glove Award after he was a winner previously in 2008, '10, '11 and '13. Frazier and Hamilton are after their first Gold Gloves. The winners will be announced at Nov. 10 at 7 p.m. ET on ESPN. The other finalists at second base this year are Dee Gordon from the Marlins and DJ LeMahieu of the Rockies. LeMahieu won the award in 2014, when Phillips was also a finalist. Hamilton was a finalist in 2014. This year, he's up against the Pirates' Andrew McCutchen and A.J. Pollock of the D-backs. Frazier, a first-time finalist, is joined by two-time winner Nolan Arenado of the Rockies and Matt Duffy of the Giants. Since 1957, Major League managers and coaches have been the sole voters for the awards to the best defensive players in baseball. Starting in 2013, however, voting results were calculated along sabermetric data to determine winners of the Gold Glove Awards. A committee of experts in baseball analytics and defensive measurement devised the SABR Defensive Index (SDI), which draws on and aggregates two types of existing defensive metrics: those derived from batted ball, location-based data, and those collected by from play-by-play accounts. In the final in-season SDI results posted on Sept. 13, Hamilton was ranked as the top NL center fielder while Frazier was ranked third behind Arenado and Duffy. Phillips was the fourth-ranked NL second baseman. CINCINNATI ENQUIRER Phillips, Frazier, Hamilton named Rawlings Gold Glove finalists By C. Trent Rosecrans / Cincinnati Enquirer / [email protected] / @ctrent Reds second baseman Brandon Phillips, third baseman Todd Frazier and center fielder Billy Hamilton are finalists for the Rawlings Gold Glove Award at their respective positions. Phillips is a four-time Gold Glove winner. Hamilton is a finalist for the second consecutive season, while Frazier is a first-time finalist. Phillips won the Gold Glove in 2008, 2010, 2011 and 2013. Winners will be announced Nov. 10 live on MLB Network. Voting done by managers and coaches accounts for 75 percent of the total, while the other 25 percent comes from statistical data from the Society for American Baseball Research (SABR). In the final in-season update to the SABR Defensive Index (SDI), the statistical component used for voting, for games through Sept. 13, Hamilton was the top center fielder in the National League, while Frazier was third at third base and Phillips was fourth at second base. The other finalists in center field are the Pirates’ Andrew McCutchen and the Diamondbacks’ A.J. Pollock. Mets center fielder Juan Lagares won the award last season. The third base finalists are Frazier, Colorado’s Nolan Arenado and the Giants’ Matt Duffy. Arenado won the award the last two years. The finalists at second base are Phillips, the Marlins’ Dee Gordon and the Rockies’ DJ LeMahieu. LeMahieu won the award last season. FOXSPORTSOHIO.COM Three Reds finalists for Gold Gloves By Connor Kiesel / Fox Sports Ohio The Cincinnati Reds have a trio of players in the running for National League Gold Gloves. Major League Baseball announced three finalists at each position Thursday. Brandon Phillips, Todd Frazier and Billy Hamilton are the Reds vying for the awards. At second base, Phillips is up against Dee Gordon of the Miami Marlins and DJ LeMahieu of the Colorado Rockies. Frazier will fight for the third base nod with Nolan Arenado of the Rockies and Matt Duffy of the San Francisco Giants. Hamilton's competition in center is Andrew McCutchen of the Pittsburgh Pirates and A.J. Pollock of the Arizona Diamondbacks. Phillips has won four Gold Glove Awards, most recently in 2013. Neither Frazier nor Hamilton has yet to receive the honor. If voters had any doubts about Phillips, they need look no further than some of these gems he pulled off in 2015. WXIX - FOX 19 3 Reds tabbed as Gold Glove finalists By Brad Hawley / Fox 19 Three Cincinnati Reds have been nominated as finalists for the 2015 Rawlings Gold Glove Award. Third baseman Todd Frazier, second baseman Brandon Phillips and center fielder Billy Hamilton are in the top three of their respective positions, the MLB announced on Thursday. Major League managers and coaches, voting only within their league and unable to vote for players on their own teams, account for 75 percent of the vote. The other 25 percent goes to the sabermetrics community. Joining Frazier in the top three for third basemen are San Francisco's Matt Duffy and Colorado's Nolan Arenado. The two finalists battling Phillips for the second base crown is Miami's Dee Gordon and Colorado's D.J. LeMahieu. Joining Hamilton in the top three for center field is Pittsburgh's Andrew McCutchen and Arizona's A.J. Pollock. Hamilton and Frazier are looking for their first Gold Glove Award, while Phillips is seeking his fifth. The winners will be revealed on Nov. 10 at 7 p.m. .

  • Joe Torre Joe Torre Was Named Manager of the Los Angeles Dodgers on November 1, 2007, Becoming the 26Th Manager in Team History
Joe Torre Joe Torre was named manager of the Los Angeles Dodgers on November 1, 2007, becoming the 26th manager in team history. Prior to the joining the Dodgers, Torre spent the past twelve seasons as manager of the New York Yankees. In 2008, Torre led the Dodgers to the division title and the club won their first playoff series in 20 years. In becoming the 31st manager in Yankees team history, he joined Casey Stengel, Yogi Berra and Dallas Green as the fourth skipper to wear both Yankee and New York Met uniforms. Torre's Yankees made the playoffs every year under his tenure. He led the Yankees to 6 World Series appearances during the 12 year span, winning 4 World Series Championships, most recently in 2000. The 2000 title was the 26th overall for the Yankees, the most of any team in professional sports. They are just the third team to win four titles in five years, the other two also being Yankees teams. The Bronx Bombers captured four straight titles beginning in 1936 and later won five consecutive championships from 1949-53. The Yankees also became the first team since the Oakland Athletics from 1972-74 to win three straight world titles. Torre led the 1996 Yankees to their first World Series title since 1978. He was named Sportsman of the Year by The Sporting News and Co-American League Manager of the Year by the Baseball Writers Association of America. After a return to post-season competition in 1997, Torre led the Yankees to 114 wins during the 1998 regular season, an American League record, and a four-game sweep of the San Diego Padres in the 1998 World Series.
