Garden Mastery Tips March 2006 from Clark County Master Gardeners Flowering Quince Flowering quince is a group of three hardy, deciduous shrubs: Chaenomeles cathayensis, Chaenomeles japonica, and Chaenomeles speciosa. Native to eastern Asia, flowering quince is related to the orchard quince (Cydonia oblonga), which is grown for its edible fruit, and the Chinese quince (Pseudocydonia sinensis). Flowering quince is often referred to as Japanese quince (this name correctly refers only to C. japonica). Japonica is often used regardless of species, and flowering quince is still called Japonica by gardeners all over the world. The most commonly cultivated are the hybrid C. superba and C. speciosa, not C. japonica. Popular cultivars include ‘Texas Scarlet,’ a 3-foot-tall plant with red blooms; ‘Cameo,’ a double, pinkish shrub to five feet tall; and ‘Jet Trail,’ a white shrub to 3 feet tall. Flowering quince is hardy to USDA Zone 4 and is a popular ornamental shrub in both Europe and North America. It is grown primarily for its bright flowers, which may be red, pink, orange, or white. The flowers are 1 to 2 inches in diameter, with five petals, and bloom in late winter or early spring. The glossy dark green leaves appear soon after flowering and turn yellow or red in autumn. The edible quince fruit is yellowish-green with reddish blush and speckled with small dots. The fruit is 2 to 4 inches in diameter, fragrant, and ripens in fall. In the past decade, significant progress has been made in pear molecular genetics based on DNA research, but the number of molecular markers is still quite limited, which hardly satisfies the increasing needs of geneticists and breeders. Results: In this study, a total of 156,396 simple sequence repeat (SSR) loci were identified from a genome sequence of Pyrus bretschneideri ‘Dangshansuli’. A total of 101,694 pairs of SSR primers were designed from the SSR loci, and 80,415 of the SSR loci were successfully located on 17 linkage groups (LGs). A total of 534 primer pairs were synthesized and preliminarily screened in four pear cultivars, and of these, 332 primer pairs were selected as clear, stable, and polymorphic SSR markers. Eighteen polymorphic SSR markers were randomly selected from the 332 polymorphic SSR markers in order to perform a further analysis of the genetic diversity among 44 pear cultivars. The 14 European pears and their hybrid materials were clustered into one group (European pear group); 29 Asian pear cultivars were clustered into one group (Asian pear group); and the Zangli pear cultivar ‘Deqinli’ from Yunnan Province, China, was grouped in an independent group, which suggested that the cultivar ‘Deqinli’ is a distinct and valuable germplasm resource. -

Maleae consists of economically and ecologically important plants. However, there are considerable disputes on generic circumscription due to the lack of a reliable phylogeny at generic level. In this study, molecular phylogeny of 35 generally accepted genera in Maleae is established using 15 chloroplast regions. Gillenia isthemostbasalcladeofMaleae,followedbyKageneckia + Lindleya, Vauquelinia, and a typical radiation clade, the core Maleae, suggesting that the proposal of four subtribes is reasonable. -

The main part of the study was performed in South Sweden, in experimental fields where no pesticides or fungicides were applied. In the fields shoots, leaves, flowers and fruits were collected, and fruits in cold storage were also sampled. It was concluded that Japanese quince is a comparatively healthy plant, but some fungi were identified that could be potential threats to the crop, which is currently being developed for organic growing. Grey mould, Botrytis cinerea, was very common on plants in the fields, and was observed on shoots, flower parts, fruits in all stages and also on fruits in cold storage. An inoculation experiment showed that the fungus could infect both wounded and unwounded tissue in shoots. Studies of potted plants left outdoors during winter indicated that a possible mode of infection of the shoots could be through persist- ing fruits, resulting in die-back of shoots. Fruit spots, brown lesions and fruit rot appeared in the field. Most common were small red spots, which eventually developed into brown rots. Fungi detected in these spots were Septoria cydoniae, Phlyctema vagabunda, Phoma exigua and Entomosporium mespili. The fact that several fungi were con- nected with this symptom indicates that the red colour may be a general response of the host, rather than a specific symptom of one fungus. -

A member of the rose family, it was first introduced into English gardens in the late 1700’s and found its way into gardens in the United States in the early to mid 1800’s. It was a favorite in rural gardens and on farms for its attractive flowers, edible fruit and cover for compact, growing 4–6 feet tall with a slightly wider spread so wildlife. Recording of biochemical parameters such as dry matter, total soluble solids, total acidity and pH was the most important segment of this research. The study also focused on comprised pomological traits such as fruit weight (g), fruit size (mm) and length (mm) and petiole length (mm). The values for fruit dry mater ranged from 26.2% to 28.8%, total soluble solid contents ranged from 20.45% to 22.25%, titrable acid contents ranged from 1.9% to 2.28%. The values for fruit weights ranged from 21.4g to 25.5g, fruit length ranged from 34.5mm to 38.4mm, fruit widths ranged from 31.5mm to 36.2mm, and petiole length ranged from 19.8mm to 23.2mm. Over the years of study, all researched cultivars had yields in the agroecological conditions of Bijelo Polje. -
Korean Plants Paeonia
Korean plants Paeonia We had the opportunity for several hikes in National Parks while on Jeju Island where we were able to see many native Korean plants. Neillia (Stephanandra) incisa was one of the most common flowering shrubs in native areas Korea. It is cultivated in the US, but only as the cultivar ‘Crispa’. Rosa luciae produced large thickets of white flowers. Korean blackberry (Rubus coreanus) was in flower in the foothills on one of our hikes on Jeju Island. The fruit are made into a Korean fruit wine (bokbunia ju). Acer pseudosieboldianum While hiking on Jeju Island it was wonderful to realize that we were walking through native stands of hinoki cypress (Chamaecyparis obtusa). Daphniphyllum macropodum was an understory evergreen plant seen on our hikes on Jeju Island. It produces male and female flowers on separate plants. Female flowers Male flowers Viola mandshurica was common along the sides of the trail. Mukdenia rossii is a Korean plant just starting to gain popularity in the US as a shade-loving perennial. We were surprised to see so many Arisaema ringens plants growing in woodland areas. Korean jack-in-the-pulpit (Arisaema amurense serratum). Bijarim Forest on Jeju Island has the largest natural stand of nutmeg yew (Torreya nucifera). The oldest tree is over 800 years-old. There were several interesting plants along the coastline. Pittosporum tobira is native to Korea and a commonly cultivated shrub in southeastern and western USA. It is salt tolerant and common along the coastline. Beach silvertop (Glehnia littoralis) formed interesting rosettes of white color. We saw Korean pines (Pinus koraiensis) in the hills around the Hwagyesa Temple in Seoul and then again in the market where it is sold for its edible seeds. -
