NNS130919-04. NAS Oceana's Fleet and Family Support Center Hosts Job Fair

By Mass Communication Specialist Seaman Scott Barnes, Navy Public Affairs Support Element, Norfolk

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (NNS) -- The job fair included more than 40 representatives from local employers and schools, which handed out brochures and applications for prospective employees and students.

"This gives people the opportunity to network with employers because a lot of the spouses and transitioning service members have never been to an interview or spoken to an employer before," said Sandy Meadow, employment educator FFSC NAS Oceana. "It gives them opportunity to learn how to handle a job fair and how to produce a resume."

Businesses and schools attending ranged from retail businesses and small colleges, to Newport News Shipbuilding and Navy College, which provided those attending with a wide variety of career fields and schools for their specific qualifications and needs.

"We do everything we can to help get transitioning service members, spouses and family members jobs," said Meadow. "Its just one small part of what Fleet and Family Support Program does."

"We try to go above and beyond to make sure that we are there for them," said Beth Toone, education and training supervisor FFSC NAS Oceana. "We are very customer service oriented."

FFSC NAS Oceana is holding a Career Week starting Sept. 23, which will include classes on skills such as career planning and interviewing. For more information on Career Week and upcoming events call FFSC at (752) 433-2912 of visit www.cnic.navy.mil/navylifema.

NNS130919-02. Epictetus Award Presented to Gridley Commanding Officer

By Mass Communication Specialist 1st Class (SW/AW) Rosalie Garcia, Naval Surface Force, U.S. Pacific Fleet Public Affairs

SAN DIEGO (NNS) -- The USS Gridley commanding officer was awarded the 2013 Navy Epictetus Leadership Award by the director, Twenty-First Century Sailor Office in San Diego, Sept. 18.

"You were chosen as the recipient of this year's Epictetus Leadership Award, which

http://content.govdelivery.com/accounts/USNAVYDMA/bulletins/8bd793[2013/09/20 19:39:12] Navy News Service

recognizes the Sailor who best emulates and exemplifies the leadership traits that we need with respect to the resiliency of a U.S. Navy Sailor," said Director, Twenty-First Century Sailor Office, Rear Adm. Shawn Buck to award recipient Cmdr. Gadala Kratzer.

The Epictetus Award is an annual presentation, sponsored by the Navy Center for Combat and Operational Stress Control. The award acknowledges leadership characteristics in an individual who models behavior for other aspiring leaders to emulate, who maintains mission focus at all times, and who demonstrates concern and a caring attitude for their shipmates.

Commodore, Destroyer Squadron 1, Capt. Michael Elliott, also presented Kratzer with a coin on behalf of Director, Naval Center for Combat and Operational Stress Control, Capt. Scott Johnson.

"This award not only means a lot to the commanding officer, but also to the crew because the crew is a direct reflection of the ship's captain," said Elliott. "The toughest job we have as leaders is taking our Sailors from all walks of life, and giving them a common vision to follow, so it's not so much getting this award; it's the journey it takes to get there."

The Epictetus award was named after a Greek philosopher who lived in the first century. He was a wise observer of human behavior and often used nautical metaphors to dispense his philosophy. This award comes from a metaphor of the ship's captain at the helm in turbulent seas: "Anyone can hold the rudder when the sea is calm." The quote suggests that it takes a strong, confident, and undeterred leader to keep the ship afloat, on course, and the crew safe.

It is an honor to receive this award," said Kratzer. "A commanding officer is nothing without his Sailors, so this is for the Sailors I lead on a daily basis."

NNS130919-09. Navy Civilian Professionals at Academic Awards Ceremony Observe Moment of Silence in Honor of Fallen Navy Yard Colleagues

By John J. Joyce, NSWC Dahlgren Division Corporate Communications

DAHLGREN, Va. (NNS) -- Navy technology and business professionals paused during an academic recognition ceremony Sept. 17 to reflect and honor their Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA) colleagues who were killed and injured at the Washington Navy Yard the day before.

Naval Surface Warfare Center Dahlgren Division (NSWCDD) Commander Michael Smith read the names of the 12 victims and led the audience in observing a moment of silence.

"We are closely affiliated with the Navy Yard," Smith said at the command's annual Academic Recognition Ceremony held in the University of Mary Washington Dahlgren campus.

He asked everyone to keep the victims in their thoughts and prayers, noting that Dahlgren employees often travel to the location of the shooting on command business.

Continuing with the ceremony, Smith and NSWCDD Acting Technical Director Stuart Koch honored 132 NSWCDD awardees for their academic and professional achievements.

"Today we are recognizing some very special men and women within our workforce who have taken on the challenge of balancing work and home with school and have succeeded in earning certifications or degrees - all the while continuing critical support to the Navy," said Smith. "We also recognize their families who shared in this sacrifice. Taking classes means long hours and an interruption of daily routines. No doubt, there were days when dinners were late or kids' ball games were missed. A special "thank you" to all the family members and friends, for you are part of today's success."

The ceremony, marking the event's 17th consecutive year, recognized scientists, engineers and business and human resource leaders who completed professional certifications or academic milestones covering the spectrum of associate's, bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees.

http://content.govdelivery.com/accounts/USNAVYDMA/bulletins/8bd793[2013/09/20 19:39:12] Navy News Service

"We are indeed proud of our employees' accomplishments," said Smith. "With their goals met, they will be better equipped to meet the scientific, technological and management challenges ahead. They assure us that our legacy of innovators and problem solvers will continue."

In addition to core engineering disciplines - mechanical, electrical and systems engineering - this year's graduates earned degrees in computer science, applied physics, material science, microbiology and infectious disease as well as information assurance, engineering management, business administration and public administration.

"Earning these credentials enhances knowledge that can be directly applied on the job - and is vital to continuing our mission readiness," said Koch, telling the audience that NSWCDD employees continued to leverage the development opportunities available to them in spite of furloughs, budget concerns and other pressures.

In all, 96 employees earned degrees from academic institutions while 36 received technical or business specialty certificates.

In addition to the nine doctoral degrees, employees were specifically recognized for 48 master's degrees, 37 baccalaureate degrees, and two associate's degrees. Honored employees included eight academic fellows, 11 professional or academic certifications, 17 information assurance certifications and one Security Professional Education Development Certification.

NSWCDD employees received nine doctorates over the past year compared to previous years when the number of doctoral degrees was typically two to five.

This year, a father and daughter graduation duo was honored for their academic achievements. The father was recognized for earning a master's degree, while working full time. His daughter was recognized for earning her undergraduate degree at Virginia Commonwealth University as a member of Pathways, an NSWCDD student program.

Moreover, NSWCDD scientist Ryan Mackie, a graduate degree honoree, received George Mason University's Impact Award. The George Mason College of Science recognized Mackie as the graduate student who published peer-reviewed scientific research in a scientific journal with the highest impact factor in the 2012-13 academic year.

Maintaining a diverse and highly skilled workforce is critical to NSWCDD - the Navy's leading warfare system architect and systems engineer, recognized as the technical leader in delivering innovative, affordable and effective solutions for the Navy, joint forces, and the nation.

"We are well aware of the importance of diversity, and that translates into the diversity of degrees as well," said Koch.

In an economy where many employers are reducing or eliminating support for employees to pursue advanced education, NSWC Dahlgren Division remains committed to supporting education opportunities for the workforce to the greatest extent possible and welcomes the opportunity to recognize employees who have reached an academic milestone each September at this annual event.

NNS130919-08. Comedian Educates Lincoln Sailors With Comedy

By Mass Communication Specialist 2nd Class Kyle Henley, USS Abraham Lincoln Public Affairs

NORFOLK (NNS) -- Sailors attached to the Nimitz-class aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln were treated to comedy mixed with a message about preventing alcohol and drug abuse at Naval Station Norfolk, Sept. 18.

"Comedy is the Cure" featured comedian Bernie McGrenahan, who has been feature on "Late Night with Jay Leno" and is an active voice against alcohol abuse.

The event is part of his "Comedy with a Message" tour and it's geared toward educating service members about the dangers of drug and alcohol abuse as well as suicide prevention.

"I came to entertain and share a personal story about how having no plan will end up ruining your night," said McGrenahan. "When you're under stress drinking can make any situation worse."

During his presentation, McGrenahan gave insight into his experiences and lessons he's learned. He said his goal was to steer people in the direction of a better life.

"Drinking can lead to poor decisions," said McGrenahan. "It can lead to drugs and blur the lines of consent between people."

Chief Aviation Structural Mechanic Sheila Dingler, Lincoln's Sexual Assault Prevention and Response coordinator, lauded McGrenahan's program for the benefits he can provide Sailors.

"This event has had a measurable impact on our fleet and Navy within the alcohol and suicide prevention effort," said Dingler. "I recommend it for all Sailors no matter the pay grade."

Dingler went on to explain her experience with the event when she attended.

"I attended last year and it was fantastic," said Dingler.

McGrenahan closed the event with a few words of wisdom that apply not only to Sailors but also all people.

"No matter how you think the night may go have a plan," said McGrenahan. "And most importantly you need to respect each other and trust the people you're with."

"It is a special honor and privilege to be here today as we recognize and celebrate the service of Rear Adm. Dave 'Woody' Woods and his wife Debbie, not only for their leadership at Strike Force Training Pacific for more than a year, but for more than 32 years of leadership in our great Navy," said Vice Adm. Kenneth E. Floyd, commander, U.S. Third Fleet. "At Third Fleet one of our more important responsibilities is providing realistic, relevant training for an effective global navy, and Woody has truly been my right arm for that effort."

During his farewell address, Woods expressed his excitement in being able to turn over CSFTP to a fellow U.S. Naval Academy graduate from the class of 1981.

"This really is a bittersweet day for me as I turn over command to my good friend and classmate, Joe Kuzmick and his wife Holly," said Woods.

NNS130919-05. CSS Celebrates Hispanic Culture, History

By Chief Mass Communication Specialist (AW/SW) Shawn D. Graham, Center for Service Support Public Affairs

NEWPORT, R.I. (NNS) -- Center for Service Support (CSS) Sailors and civilian employees observed Hispanic Heritage Month Sept. 19.

With a national theme of "Hispanics: Serving and Leading Our Nation with Pride and Honor," the observance celebrates the histories, cultures, and contributions of Americans who trace their roots to Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central and

http://content.govdelivery.com/accounts/USNAVYDMA/bulletins/8bd793[2013/09/20 19:39:12] Navy News Service

South America.

The U.S. government first officially celebrated Hispanic heritage in 1968, when President Lyndon B. Johnson declared a week in mid-September to be National Hispanic Heritage Week. In 1988, President Ronald Reagan extended the observance to a full month. Hispanic Heritage Month is celebrated from Sept. 15 to Oct. 15.

"We celebrate the things that make our country great, and to educate others about our history and culture," said Command Master Chief (SW/SCW/AW) Ray Rosado.

"Hispanic Sailors represent our culture," said Rosado. "Numerous nationalities come together to share ideas and concepts. I encourage our Sailors and civilians who are not Hispanic to learn about the many facets of Hispanic culture."

According to 2010 data from the U.S. Census Bureau, Hispanics comprise 16.3 percent of the total United States population, or 50.5 million people, forming our county's largest racial or ethnic minority. Additionally, it is projected that by 2050, a quarter of the nation's workforce will be Hispanic.

"You cannot accurately tell the story of the Navy unless you discuss the achievements of Hispanic Sailors," said Rosado. "Hispanics have a vibrant legacy throughout history. One of the best examples of a Hispanic-American Sailor is Adm. David Farragut."

Adm. David Farragut was the Navy's first rear admiral, vice admiral, and admiral. He is famously remembered in popular culture for his order at the Battle of Mobile Bay, usually paraphrased: "Damn the torpedoes, full speed ahead!"

"It's important to know your history," said Rosado. "Hispanics have been here from the Navy's early beginnings and will play a pivotal role in its future."

CSS and its learning sites provide Sailors with the knowledge and skills needed to support the Fleet's warfighting mission. More than 300 staff and faculty work hand- in-hand with the fleet and are dedicated to ensure training is current and well executed on behalf of 10,000 Sailors who graduate from CSS courses annually in the administration, logistics and media communities.

Story Number: NNS130919-02 Release Date: 9/19/2013 2:23:00 PM A A A By Mass Communication Specialist 1st Class (SW/AW) Rosalie Garcia, Naval Surface Force, U.S. Pacific Fleet Public Affairs

SAN DIEGO (NNS) -- The USS Gridley commanding officer was awarded the 2013 Navy Epictetus Leadership Award by the director, Twenty-First Century Sailor Office in San Diego, Sept. 18.

"You were chosen as the recipient of this year's Epictetus Leadership Award, which recognizes the Sailor who best emulates and exemplifies the leadership traits that we need with respect to the resiliency of a U.S.

Story Number: NNS130919-09 Release Date: 9/19/2013 10:17:00 PM A A A By John J.

Lincoln is currently undergoing a refueling and complex overhaul (RCOH) at Newport News Shipbuilding, a division of Huntington Ingalls Industries.

Lincoln is the fifth ship of the Nimitz-class to undergo RCOH, a major life-cycle milestone. Once RCOH is complete, Lincoln will be one of the most modern and technologically advanced aircraft carriers in the fleet and will continue to be a vital part of our national defense.

Story Number: NNS130919-10 Release Date: 9/19/2013 10:18:00 PM A A A By Mass Communication Specialist 2nd Class Jesse L. Gonzalez,

Commander, U.S. Third Fleet Public Affairs

CORONADO,Calif (NNS) -- Commander, Strike Force Training Pacific (CSFTP) held a change of command and retirement ceremony at Naval Air Station North Island, Sept. 18.

Rear Adm. Joseph W. Kuzmick assumed command from Rear Adm. David Woods, who retired from 32 years of honorable service.

Highlights from Wood's flag officer assignments include director, Strategy and Policy Division (N51), Chief of Naval Operations for Operations, Plans and Strategy (N3/N5); and commander, Joint Task Force Guantanamo (JTF GTMO).

Woods began his current command tour in Aug. 2012 as Commander, Strike Force Training Pacific.

NEWPORT, R.I. (NNS) -- Center for Service Support (CSS) Sailors and civilian employees observed Hispanic Heritage Month Sept. 19.

With a national theme of "Hispanics: Serving and Leading Our Nation with Pride and Honor," the observance celebrates the histories, cultures, and contributions of Americans who trace their roots to Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central and South America.

The U.S. government first officially celebrated Hispanic heritage in 1968, when President Lyndon B.

More than 300 staff and faculty work hand-in-hand with the fleet and are dedicated to ensure training is current and well executed on behalf of 10,000 Sailors who graduate from CSS courses annually in the administration, logistics and media communities.

For more news from Center for Service Support, visit www.navy.mil/local/css/.

For more information about the history of Hispanics in the Navy, visit http://www.history.navy.mil/special%20highlights/hispanic/hispanic-index.htm.

The Defense Equal Opportunity Management Institute provides printable posters, presentations, guidance for organizing observance, and educational facts on their website, http://www.deomi.org/ under the section "Special Observances."

"You were chosen as the recipient of this year's Epictetus Leadership Award, which

http://content.govdelivery.com/accounts/USNAVYDMA/bulletins/8bd793[2013/09/20 19:45:20] Navy News Service

recognizes the Sailor who best emulates and exemplifies the leadership traits that we need with respect to the resiliency of a U.S.

The ceremony, marking the event's 17th consecutive year, recognized scientists, engineers and business and human resource leaders who completed professional certifications or academic milestones covering the spectrum of associate's, bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees.

http://content.govdelivery.com/accounts/USNAVYDMA/bulletins/8bd793[2013/09/20 19:45:20] Navy News Service

NNS130919-10. CSFTP Conducts Change of Command Ceremony

By Mass Communication Specialist 2nd Class Jesse L. Gonzalez,

Commander, U.S. Third Fleet Public Affairs

CORONADO,Calif (NNS) -- Commander, Strike Force Training Pacific (CSFTP) held a change of command and retirement ceremony at Naval Air Station North Island, Sept. 18.

Rear Adm. Joseph W. Kuzmick assumed command from Rear Adm. David Woods, who retired from 32 years of honorable service.

Highlights from Wood's flag officer assignments include director, Strategy and Policy Division (N51), Chief of Naval Operations for Operations, Plans and Strategy (N3/N5); and commander, Joint Task Force Guantanamo (JTF GTMO).

Woods began his current command tour in Aug. 2012 as Commander, Strike Force

Training Pacific.

Kuzmick's most recent assignment was the director, operations and plans (N31) for the Chief of Naval Operations.

"I'm very happy to get back to the waterfront, and Strike Force Training Pacific offers a great challenge," said Rear Adm. Kuzmick. "I feel very fortunate and honored by the opportunity."

Kuzmick's sea tours include Attack Squadron 34 embarked aboard USS America (CV 66), VA-115 embarked aboard USS Midway (CV 41) and USS Independence (CV 62). During these tours, he participated in Operations El Dorado Canyon and Desert Storm.

He also served as Air Operations Officer for Commander, Cruiser Destroyer Group Three embarked in USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN 72), and as executive officer of USS John C. Stennis (CVN 74). Kuzmick has commanded Electronic Attack Squadron 128; Amphibious Command Ship USS Mount Whitney (LCC 20), and Stennis.

His shore tours include Attack Squadron 128 as an instructor; U.S. Naval Strike Warfare Center as Air Wing Training department head, and the Joint Staff National Airborne Operations Center as Command Center Operations chief.

CSFTP is U.S. Third Fleet's deputy for training and prepares U.S. Pacific Fleet's carrier and expeditionary strike groups for both routine and surge forward-deployed operations.

U.S. Third Fleet leads naval forces in the Eastern Pacific from the West Coast of North America to the international date line.

NNS130919-05. CSS Celebrates Hispanic Culture, History

By Chief Mass Communication Specialist (AW/SW) Shawn D. Graham, Center for Service Support Public Affairs

NEWPORT, R.I. (NNS) -- Center for Service Support (CSS) Sailors and civilian employees observed Hispanic Heritage Month Sept. 19.

With a national theme of "Hispanics: Serving and Leading Our Nation with Pride and Honor," the observance celebrates the histories, cultures, and contributions of Americans who trace their roots to Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central and

http://content.govdelivery.com/accounts/USNAVYDMA/bulletins/8bd793[2013/09/20 19:45:20] Navy News Service
