NAS Oceana's Fleet and Family Support Center Hosts Job Fair By Mass Communication Specialist Seaman Scott Barnes, Navy Public Affairs Support Element, Norfolk VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (NNS) -- The job fair included more than 40 representatives from local employers and schools, which handed out brochures and applications for prospective employees and students. "This gives people the opportunity to network with employers because a lot of the spouses and transitioning service members have never been to an interview or spoken to an employer before," said Sandy Meadow, employment educator FFSC NAS Oceana. "It gives them opportunity to learn how to handle a job fair and how to produce a resume." Businesses and schools attending ranged from retail businesses and small colleges, to Newport News Shipbuilding and Navy College, which provided those attending with a wide variety of career fields and schools for their specific qualifications and needs. "We do everything we can to help get transitioning service members, spouses and family members jobs," said Meadow. "Its just one small part of what Fleet and Family Support Program does." "We try to go above and beyond to make sure that we are there for them," said Beth Toone, education and training supervisor FFSC NAS Oceana. "We are very customer service oriented." FFSC NAS Oceana is holding a Career Week starting Sept. 23, which will include classes on skills such as career planning and interviewing. Epictetus Award Presented to Gridley Commanding Officer By Mass Communication Specialist 1st Class (SW/AW) Rosalie Garcia, Naval Surface Force, U.S. Pacific Fleet Public Affairs SAN DIEGO (NNS) -- The USS Gridley commanding officer was awarded the 2013 Navy Epictetus Leadership Award by the director, Twenty-First Century Sailor Office in San Diego, Sept. 18. "You were chosen as the recipient of this year's Epictetus Leadership Award, which http://content.govdelivery.com/accounts/USNAVYDMA/bulletins/8bd793[2013/09/20 19:39:12] Navy News Service recognizes the Sailor who best emulates and exemplifies the leadership traits that we need with respect to the resiliency of a U.S. Navy Sailor," said Director, Twenty-First Century Sailor Office, Rear Adm. Shawn Buck to award recipient Cmdr. Gadala Kratzer. The Epictetus Award is an annual presentation, sponsored by the Navy Center for Combat and Operational Stress Control. The award acknowledges leadership characteristics in an individual who models behavior for other aspiring leaders to emulate, who maintains mission focus at all times, and who demonstrates concern and a caring attitude for their shipmates. Commodore, Destroyer Squadron 1, Capt. Michael Elliott, also presented Kratzer with a coin on behalf of Director, Naval Center for Combat and Operational Stress Control, Capt. Scott Johnson. "This award not only means a lot to the commanding officer, but also to the crew because the crew is a direct reflection of the ship's captain," said Elliott. "The toughest job we have as leaders is taking our Sailors from all walks of life, and giving them a common vision to follow, so it's not so much getting this award; it's the journey it takes to get there." The Epictetus award was named after a Greek philosopher who lived in the first century. He was a wise observer of human behavior and often used nautical metaphors to dispense his philosophy. This award comes from a metaphor of the ship's captain at the helm in turbulent seas: "Anyone can hold the rudder when the sea is calm." The quote suggests that it takes a strong, confident, and undeterred leader to keep the ship afloat, on course, and the crew safe. It is an honor to receive this award," said Kratzer. "A commanding officer is nothing without his Sailors, so this is for the Sailors I lead on a daily basis." Navy Civilian Professionals at Academic Awards Ceremony Observe Moment of Silence in Honor of Fallen Navy Yard Colleagues By John J. Joyce, NSWC Dahlgren Division Corporate Communications DAHLGREN, Va. (NNS) -- Navy technology and business professionals paused during an academic recognition ceremony Sept. 17 to reflect and honor their Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA) colleagues who were killed and injured at the Washington Navy Yard the day before. Naval Surface Warfare Center Dahlgren Division (NSWCDD) Commander Michael Smith read the names of the 12 victims and led the audience in observing a moment of silence. "We are closely affiliated with the Navy Yard," Smith said at the command's annual Academic Recognition Ceremony held in the University of Mary Washington Dahlgren campus. He asked everyone to keep the victims in their thoughts and prayers, noting that Dahlgren employees often travel to the location of the shooting on command business. Continuing with the ceremony, Smith and NSWCDD Acting Technical Director Stuart Koch honored 132 NSWCDD awardees for their academic and professional achievements. "Today we are recognizing some very special men and women within our workforce who have taken on the challenge of balancing work and home with school and have succeeded in earning certifications or degrees - all the while continuing critical support to the Navy," said Smith. "We also recognize their families who shared in this sacrifice. Taking classes means long hours and an interruption of daily routines. No doubt, there were days when dinners were late or kids' ball games were missed. A special "thank you" to all the family members and friends, for you are part of today's success." The ceremony, marking the event's 17th consecutive year, recognized scientists, engineers and business and human resource leaders who completed professional certifications or academic milestones covering the spectrum of associate's, bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees. http://content.govdelivery.com/accounts/USNAVYDMA/bulletins/8bd793[2013/09/20 19:39:12] Navy News Service "We are indeed proud of our employees' accomplishments," said Smith. "With their goals met, they will be better equipped to meet the scientific, technological and management challenges ahead.
