CULTIVATING INDIANA’S NEXT GENERATION OF LEADERS The 500 Festival Princess Program, presented by Reis-Nichols Jewelers, celebrates Indiana’s most civic-minded, academically driven young women. Each year, 33 college-aged women are selected as 500 Festival Princesses and serve as ambassa- dors of the 500 Festival, their hometowns, and their colleges/universities. Serving as a 500 Festival Princess provides young women with once-in-a-life-time experiences and countless opportunities for leadership and professional development. Since the program’s founding in 1959, more than 1,800 Indiana women have experienced the honor of being selected as a 500 Festival Princess. Each 500 Festival Princess will participate in the program’s personal and profes- sional development initiative, further empowering participants to make a profound impact within their community and the state of Indiana. In addition, each 500 Festival Princess will receive a $1,000 scholarship, made possible by Marlyne Sexton, an India- napolis philanthropist and president of The Sexton Companies. In the months leading up to May, 500 Festival Princesses are involved with state- wide outreach programs, including visits to hospitals, schools and various youth pro- grams. Princesses will attend and volunteer at all 500 Festival events throughout the month of May, are present at various Indianapolis Motor Speedway functions, and participate in the pre-race ceremonies and Victory Circle celebration for the Indianap- In our community, power is more olis 500. than just electricity. Prestwick Country Club, Avon Submitted photo Prestwick Country Club, Avon By Ken Sebree Located between Avon and Danville along County Road 525 E, you will find the Prestwick Country Club and Golf Course. The course, designed by famed golf course architect Bob Simmons, was built in 1974 on 240 acres of scenic woodland, bluffs, and creek bottom, and features four sets of bunkers and plays from 5800 to 7000 yards depending on the level of challenge each golf- er desires. There is now a large residential community surrounding the golf course containing more than a thousand homes and condominiums. The central structure for the club is the original century-old farmhouse which has been renovated and expanded many times through the years. Prestwick Club is a ‘Members Only’ facility offering a full-service golf shop plus dining room and bar service. However their banquet facilities can be made available to the public for special events, meetings, and weddings. The Prestwick Golf Club enjoys a rich tournament history of Indiana’s top professional and amateur golfers with the Indiana Men’s State Open, Indiana Women’s State Open, Indianapolis Open, Indiana State Amateur, ISHAA State Championship and many others. Each year hosts its spring invitational at Prestwick bringing 18 college teams to the course for three days of golf. In 2007, the golf course was purchased by PGA Professional, Ben Weaver. Soon after, major course improvements were begun along with develop- ment of club programs designed to better serve members and the commu- nity. Weaver has helped develop various programs to expand local interest in golf like a junior golf tour, pee wee golf camp, free ladies’ golf lessons and youth tournaments. Prestwick’s All-Star team has finished in fifth place in the national championship in the PGA Junior League in Atlanta, Georgia. This resulted in Prestwick being named 2014 Indiana Course of the Year by the National Golf Course Owners Association. This award honors their golf course owner members. This award is based on exceptional quality of the course, ex- ceptional quality of ownership and management, outstanding contribution to community, and significant contributions to the game of golf.

I really like Mrs. Moon because she’s very nice and encourages us. She makes us work hard to learn everything. She has a black spider in the classroom we all like. I like all the parties we have. I read and write so much better because of Mrs. Moon’s help. She works hard to make sure we are all learning new things every day. She also tells us when we do nice work and try our best. I even would go to school on Saturday to see her and my friends!
