10/23/2020 News in brief - Mark Barnett, News and events, Alumni & Friends, University of Otago, New Zealand Making your dreams a reality Home News and events Friday 18 September 2020 Otago alumnus Mark Barnett (BSc Chemistry, 2000), has followed his motor racing dreams and spent more than 13 years working for some of the world’s leading motorsports companies. He is currently the Director of Research and Innovation at McLaren Racing in the United Kingdom. Originally from Southland, Mark grew up on a farm near Nightcaps and completed high school in Invercargill, before heading to Otago to study. “I think Otago is a nice size and a lovely location to be a student. The centralised nature, particularly the shops and businesses, mean that the students all generally live together and provides for a great atmosphere to study in. “I lived in Oxford for a long time after moving to the UK and many say that they are similar centres and I have to admit after spending considerable time in both I have to agree.” Mark attended Studholme College in his first year at the University, then spent two years flatting before moving to Christchurch to study Mechanical Engineering. “I always needed to believe in the application of what I was studying, and I decided early on that I wanted to do engineering as a way of working in motorsport. So, I added some Maths papers while at Otago to skip the first year of the Mechanical Engineering degree.” https://www.otago.ac.nz/alumni/news/O24newsinbrief2.html 1/3 10/23/2020 News in brief - Mark Barnett, News and events, Alumni & Friends, University of Otago, New Zealand While at university Mark worked each summer in the local motorsport series as the season fitted in well with the major study break.

  • The Indy Racing League and the Indianapolis 500
The Indy Racing League and the Indianapolis 500: Increasing Competition in Open-Wheeled Automobile Racing in the United States Robert W. White Department of Sociology and Andrew J. Baker Department of Geography School of Liberal Arts IUPUI We thank Terri Talbert-Hatch and Pete Hylton for their comments and support of Motorsports Studies. Please direct correspondence to Robert White ([email protected]), Professor of Sociology and Director of Motorsports Studies, or Andrew Baker ([email protected]), Lecturer, Department of Geography, School of Liberal Arts, Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI), 425 University Boulevard, Indianapolis, Indiana, 46202. 1 The Indy Racing League and the Indianapolis 500: Increasing Competition in Open-Wheeled Automobile Racing in the United States Abstract Over the course of its lengthy history, the popularity of open-wheeled automobile racing in the United States has waxed and waned. This is especially evident in recent years. The 1996 “split” between the Indy Racing League (IRL; later, the IndyCar Series) and Championship Auto Racing Teams (CART; later the Champ Car World Series) severely hurt the sport. Following the split there was a well-documented decline in fan interest from which the sport has not recovered. Less understood, however, is that under the Indy Racing League the Indianapolis 500, the premier event in open-wheeled racing in the United States, became more competitive. Ironically, while fan interest decreased in the Indy Racing League era, the quality of racing increased. The increased competition associated with the Indy Racing League is a historically significant development that bodes well for the future of the sport.

  • Life Near the Fast Lane
Life near the fast lane Villagers recall time spent living minutes from Indianapolis Motor Speedway The Villages Daily Sun Saturday, May 25, 2013 By Keith Pearlman Quick, in what city is the Indianapolis 500 held? If, like most people, you offer the obvious answer of Indianapolis, you would be incorrect. The “Greatest Spectacle in Racing” is actually held every Memorial Day weekend in Speedway, Ind. The 97th running is set for Sunday at the world-famous Indianapolis Motor Speedway, which is located in the town of about 12,000 residents that was incorporated in 1926. Speedway is an enclave of Indianapolis with its own government, police and fire departments, and school system. Villagers Elaine Harrold and Jane Routte cringe a little when they hear the race called the Indianapolis 500. They both lived in Speedway and are proud of the town’s racing heritage. “Everybody in town hates it being called the Indianapolis 500,” Harrold said. “They all believe it should be the Speedway 500. Route agrees. “The old-timers really resent it being called the Indianapolis 500,” she said. “Speedway is a separate town with a separate identity.” Harrold, of the Village of Pennecamp, moved to the town with her family as a child in 1954. She graduated from Speedway High School in 1965 and was later married and gave birth to her own children in the town. “I’m proud to say I grew up in Speedway,” Harrold said. “We lived three blocks from the famed oval. The grandstands along the front stretch towered over our backyard.” Routte, who lives in the Village of Summerhill, moved to Speedway with her husband, Steven, in 1988.
