THE TM 911 Franklin Street Weekly Newspaper Michigan City, IN 46360 Volume 36, Number 3 Thursday, January 23, 2020 3FJOWFOUJOH$MBTTJDT by Edmund Lawler Dan Schaaf (right) records dialogue for his latest project, “Dr. Mabuse: The Gambler,” with Sherri Waddle-Cummings. Photos by Paul Kemiel Suddenly, quite by accident, Dan Schaaf discov- ered a wildly creative artistic pursuit — breathing new life into classic silent fi lms by composing musi- cal scores and scripting dialogue performed by local stage actors. “Channel 20 used to run silent fi lms at midnight,” Schaaf recalls of his epiphany in the late 1990s. “They ran the Fritz Lang classic ‘Metropolis,’ a 1927 sci-fi that I had never seen. I fi gured I needed to see it once in my life, so I set the VCR to record it at midnight.” He watched it the next morning and was enchant- ed by the epic work of cinema from the legendary German director. But there was one problem. “It had this dreadful musical score that sounded like it came from a Laurel and Hardy comedy, and it had absolutely nothing to do with the fi lm,” Schaaf says. “I told myself, ‘I can do better than this.’” And he did. Schaaf, who fi rst began composing music as a Marquette High School student and later while studying English and electrical engineering at Pur- due University, penned a score for “Metropolis.” Un- Sherri Waddle-Cummings infuses emotion into her dialogue for the fi lm. 10/23/2020 News in brief - Mark Barnett, News and events, Alumni & Friends, University of Otago, New Zealand Making your dreams a reality Home News and events Friday 18 September 2020 Otago alumnus Mark Barnett (BSc Chemistry, 2000), has followed his motor racing dreams and spent more than 13 years working for some of the world’s leading motorsports companies. He is currently the Director of Research and Innovation at McLaren Racing in the United Kingdom. Originally from Southland, Mark grew up on a farm near Nightcaps and completed high school in Invercargill, before heading to Otago to study. “I think Otago is a nice size and a lovely location to be a student. The centralised nature, particularly the shops and businesses, mean that the students all generally live together and provides for a great atmosphere to study in. “I lived in Oxford for a long time after moving to the UK and many say that they are similar centres and I have to admit after spending considerable time in both I have to agree.” Mark attended Studholme College in his first year at the University, then spent two years flatting before moving to Christchurch to study Mechanical Engineering. “I always needed to believe in the application of what I was studying, and I decided early on that I wanted to do engineering as a way of working in motorsport. So, I added some Maths papers while at Otago to skip the first year of the Mechanical Engineering degree.” https://www.otago.ac.nz/alumni/news/O24newsinbrief2.html 1/3 10/23/2020 News in brief - Mark Barnett, News and events, Alumni & Friends, University of Otago, New Zealand While at university Mark worked each summer in the local motorsport series as the season fitted in well with the major study break. -

Not Another Trash Tournament Written by Eliza Grames, Melanie Keating, Virginia Ruiz, Joe Nutter, and Rhea Nelson PACKET ONE 1. This character’s coach says that although it “takes all kinds to build a freeway” he is not equipped for this character’s kind of weirdness close the playoffs. This character lost his virginity to the homecoming queen and the prom queen at the same time and says he’ll be(*) “scoring more than baskets” at an away game and ends up in a teacher’s room wearing a thong which inspires the entire basketball team to start wearing them at practice. When Carrie brags about dating this character, Heather, played by Ashanti, hits her in the back of the head with a volleyball before Brittany Snow’s character breaks up the fight. Four girls team up to get back at this high school basketball star for dating all of them at once. For 10 points, name this character who “must die.” ANSWER: John Tucker [accept either] 2. The hosts of this series that premiered in 2003 once crafted a combat robot named Blendo, and one of those men served as a guest judge on the 2016 season of BattleBots. After accidentally shooting a penny into a fluorescent light on one episode of this show, its cast had to be evacuated due to mercury vapor. On a “Viewers’ Special” episode of this show, its hosts(*) attempted to sneeze with their eyes open, before firing cigarette butts from a rifle. This show’s hosts produced the short-lived series Unchained Reaction, which also aired on the Discovery Channel. -

Star Kandi Burruss Is Engaged
‘Real Housewives of Atlanta’ Star Kandi Burruss Is Engaged By Nic Baird Kandi Burruss, from Bravo’s Real Housewives of Atlanta is engaged to her costar, line producer Todd Tucker, Burruss’s rep confirmed to People. The reality star couple first met when filming the fourth season of Real Housewives of Atlanta in 2011. Buruss is a Grammy Award winner known for writing TLC’s hit “No Scrubs,” Destiny Child’s “Bills, Bills, Bills” and Pink’s “There You Go.” Her upcoming show, The Kandi Factory, follows her as she searches for the next big pop talent. She also has an 11-year-old daughter, Riley, from a previous relationship. How do you announce your engagement to your children? Cupid’s Advice: There’s a lot of pressure to make sure your relationship doesn’t affect your child. This priority can make sudden changes to your family seem more stressful then they should. Sit down with your child, have the discussion, and simultaneously create a healthier family unit. Here’s how: 1. Treat them with respect:When discussing your new engagement with your children, you have to give their feelings and questions the attention they deserve without dismissing any discussion. Make sure they understand how much you appreciate them as part of your life. Let them know this new arrangement doesn’t change your love for them. This is an addition to the family, not a subtraction. 2. Talk to them with your fiancé: A united front means making decisions as a parenting unit. If you’re getting married, it means that your partner will fill this role to some degree. -

However, before the alarm bells start ringing, let us clarify: we are no longer in the golden age of entertainment because today, entertainment is everything. We live in an attention economy where viewership, clicks, and likes control influence, relevance, and the bottom line. Consequently, every experience, product, and piece of content is being created with the entertainment factor in mind—from news stories and video tutorials to influencer personas and bathrooms (yes, bathrooms). All of this sounds good in theory—after all, who doesn’t love to be entertained?! But for marketers and content creators, it means that creating compelling media has gotten that much harder. -
Roman Popadiuk
White House Interview Program DATE: November 2, 1999 INTERVIEWEE: ROMAN POPADIUK INTERVIEWER: Martha Kumar [Disc 1 of 1] MK: It’s on the record except where you want to go on background or off the record. Ultimately, it will end up in the library. RP: This library? MK: Yes. You get a choice of what library it goes into so I’m assuming it will be in this library. The project is trying to develop an institutional memory for seven White House offices, and Press [Office] is one of them. It’s a group of presidency scholars that are working on the project. George Edwards is one of them. We will come out in March or April with a group of standards of a successful start, which are some elements that are common to successful transitions. Then the offices’ material will be made available; some of it will probably be made available at the time the transition teams are put together. The full text of interviews will not be released until after a new president comes in. RP: Okay. Sounds good. MK: Starting off, can you talk about how you got into the White House, and how long you were? Let’s start with that, and how you got in. RP: How I actually got in to the White House? MK: Yes. RP: Well, it was back in February of 1985, but I didn’t start in the Press Office. I’ll give you a long story here. Prior to that I was in the operations [center] over at the State Department, one of the watch officers/editors I guess we were called, if I recall correctly. -

The success of the series that led to her award is a direct correlation to the large crowds that the film attracted when it made its debut in 2008. What is astounding, is that in 2007 only five of the fifty top grossing movies in American had a woman as a lead character , so not surprisingly critics throughout the nation were stunned at the great success the film Sex and the City had on its opening weekend. While critics were astounded, loyal fans predicted the success. The popularity of the film may perhaps be indicative of the times . This film came three years after the season finale of the HBO series also titled, Sex and the City . The series began at the peak of an ambitious female generation, empowered by third wave, and post-modern feminist movements. It may be that the emergence of a series that features the lives of four New York City women whose motto is to “do it like a man,” is the reason for the incredible following the series has had since its public debut. -
