Public broadcast organisations must adopt novel strategies to survive and compete in this new environment, where they need to combine public service with popularity. In this context, scheduling has emerged as the central management tool, organising production and controlling budgets, and is now the driving force in television. -

Reprinted from http://www.glbtq.com Despite some important breakthroughs in the depiction of gay men and lesbians in the past, Australian television today lacks any regular and open discussion of queer issues and lives. Australian television launched the careers of Nicole Kidman, Kylie Minogue, Guy Pearce, Paul Hogan, and Skippy the Kangaroo. One of its five networks led the world in producing a type of sexy, outrageous serial drama that spawned a cycle of soap opera that has beguiled audiences in Australia and in many other parts of the world for over thirty years. Certainly cult television would be the poorer without dramas like Sons and Daughters (with the infamous Pat the Rat), Prisoner/Prisoner--Cell Block H (featuring the dyke-you- love-to-hate), and Return to Eden (heroine escapes jaws of crocodile--just--and takes on new body, face, identity). The combination of geographical isolation, an unpredictable climate, and hatred of pretension and authoritarianism has found its way into Australia's television programming. This was the country that produced the world's first positive gay character (Number 96, 1972-77). And the world's first bisexuals, male and female (Number 96, The Box). And the world's first gay man to parent a young boy far more lovingly and effectively than the boy's own biological parents (Players to the Gallery, 1980). Despite its small population (under 20 million), Australia has been able to maintain five television networks, three entirely commercial, one partly so, and the fifth--approximating to Britain's British Broadcasting Corporation--valiantly surviving on government subsidy alone. -

Jeff Doyle and Jeffrey Grey Introduction In keeping with the wide range of concerns of the essays in this volume the bibliography has attempted to cover as many “subject headings” as seemed possible. Thus while the title “Select Bibliography” suggests that the compilers have collected only the major “texts” of concern, the following lists are an attempt to be as complete as possible at the time of final compilation. “Select” is meant to convey the fact that the editors are certain (most likely the only certainty prevailing in scholarly life) that the lists are not complete. This incompletion applies to some areas more than to others. Newspapers and the general daily print media, and their radio and television equivalent news industries are the chief areas of extreme selection. -

DEIDRE RUBENSTEIN With almost 100 stage shows to her name and an AFI Award for her screen work, Deidre's extraordinary career has been applauded en masse. Her most recent work includes major roles in MTC's Shakespeare in Love, directed by Simon Philips; MTC's A Doll's House part 2, directed by Sarah Goodes; Mrs Pearce in Opera Australia and Gordon Frost's 60th anniversary production of the Tony Award-winning musical My Fair Lady, directed by Julie Andrews; MTC's Ladies in Black and North by North West, both directed by Simon Philips; Gertrude Stein in Loving Repeating, directed by Jason Langley; Violet, directed by Mitchett Butell; and Agatha Christie's A Murder is Announced, directed by Darren Yap. Appearing on stage for all of Australia's major theatre companies, Deidre has also created and performed in three highly acclaimed solo shows: Dorothy Parker Says; What's a Girl to Do, which toured to the Edinburgh Festival; and Confidentially Yours, which was written specifically for Deidre by seven of Australia's top playwrights, including Andrew Bovell and Joanna Murray Smith. It premiered at Playbox at The Malthouse and then toured to the Hong Kong and Zimbabwe Arts Festivals. But on this epic journey he meets people who force him to re-evaluate his life. He begins to realize that a life not shared is a life not lived. Sadly it seems wisdom has come too late, until Polly finally gives Rex the courage to act. Against all the odds, in one final heroic act of pure will, he drives his cab back through time and distance to Broken Hill, where he will share what he has left of his life with the one he loves. Filmmaker Biography Jeremy Sims (born in 1966) works as an actor, director, writer and producer across theatre, film and television. Jeremy has had a successful and acclaimed career as an actor, working in film (he received an AFI award ‘Best Actor’ nomination for Idiot Box), on television (he has several Logie and AFI ‘Best Actor’ nominations, winning for Aftershocks in 1996) and on stage, where his reputation as one of Australia’s great actors has been built playing roles like Cyrano De Bergerac and Hamlet to national acclaim.
