Editorial Note This is the twenty third volume of collected papers of the Mediterranean Studies Group at Hitotsubashi University. Up to the twelfth volume, the series was called Studies in the Mediterranean World. Past and Present and many of the articles were written in Japanese. From the thirteenth volume, the title of the series, now composed of papers in European languages, was changed to Mediterranean World. Volumes are published every two or three years. The Mediterranean Studies Group was first organized at Hitotsubashi University in 1973, in order to carry out interdisciplinary research on the Mediterranean world. At that time, few studies on the Mediterranean area were undertaken in Japan, in comparison with studies on other areas of the world. Since it was founded, the Mediterranean Studies Group has held monthly seminars, offered special lectures by both Japanese and non-Japanese scholars, and organized field surveys in the Mediterranean countries concerned. We are greatly indebted to the Japanese Ministry of Education, Science and Culture for a number of grants-in-aid which have enabled us to conduct these research activities and publish the series. This volume contains the papers based on the presentations by the participants in the Workshop co-organized by the Mediterranean Studies Group (Tokyo) and the Ionian University, Department of History (Corfu, Greece), titled “Crises and Networks in the Mediterranean World II: History, Society, and Literature”, which was held in March 28, 2016 at the Ionian University. The workshop program is attached to this editorial note below. We express our heartfelt thanks to the Department of History, Ionian University and especially Dr. Vaios Vaiopoulos, Professor of Ionian University. It would have been impossible for us to organize the Workshop without their support. Finally, we have to report the regretful news. Our colleague, Dr. Mohamed Tahar Mansouri, Professor of Doha Institute for Graduate Studies, Qatar, and a member of our research group since 2009 passed away on August 10, 2016. He was an eminent scholar on Byzantine history, and had played a leading role in the academic field concerned in the Mediterranean and Arab countries. It goes without saying that his death is a great loss to us. We heartily thank his contribution to our study group.
