Where information has been derived from other sources, I confirm that this has been indicated in the thesis. 3 Abstract Utilising material such as colonial correspondence, private papers, parliamentary debates and the press, this thesis examines how the Ionian Islands were defined by British politicians and how this influenced various forms of rule in the Islands between 1815 and 1864. It explores the articulation of particular forms of colonial subjectivities for the Ionian people by colonial governors and officials. This is set in the context of political reforms that occurred in Britain and the Empire during the first half of the nineteenth-century, especially in the white settler colonies, such as Canada and Australia. It reveals how British understandings of Ionian peoples led to complex negotiations of otherness, informing the development of varieties of colonial rule. Britain suggested a variety of forms of government for the Ionians ranging from authoritarian (during the governorships of T. Maitland, H. Douglas, H. Ward, J. Young, H. Storks) to representative (under Lord Nugent, and Lord Seaton), to responsible government (under W. Gladstone’s tenure in office). All these attempted solutions (over fifty years) failed to make the Ionian Islands governable for Britain. The Ionian Protectorate was a failed colonial experiment in Europe, highlighting the difficulties of governing white, Christian Europeans within a colonial framework. -

M.Sc. Management Engineering EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES Thought as a tech-MBA and specifically designed for students with a Bachelor Degree in Engineering, the MSc in Management Engineering of the University of Palermo allow complementing the in-depth knowledge and the way of thinking of the engineering background with the ability to take strategic decisions and tackle management issues. Management engineers are managers with advanced quantitative proBlem-solving skills and able to manage companies that operate in increasingly complex, international and technologically advanced environments. The programme is inherently multidisciplinary and integrates high-level management skills with in-depth technical competences in several areas as operations and supply chain, finance, economics, project management, innovation, strategy, logistics and technology management. The educational model of the programme is strongly based on the active learning and the courses are taught with several teaching methods: lectures, practical sessions, case studies, flipped classroom, and in-class discussion. Students are involved in practical-based labs and project works developed in team where they can experience real challenges and apply the skills, methods and knowledge acquired. The programme is entirely taught in English and is divided into three discipline blocks: - Methodological disciplines include the methodological basis of the second level management engineer such as advanced statistical methods and tools for management engineering, business process modeling techniques, project management methodology and software; - Core disciplines study the main Business functions of every company, such as marketing, corporate finance, strategy, operations and supply chain, technological innovation and human resources; - Advanced Management (focus) disciplines relate to more specific topic such as sustainable technologies, public sector economics, industrial safety, technology analysis, smart manufacturing. -

2 WELCOME TO SIS 2018 For the year 2018, the 49th Meeting of the Italian Statistical Society (SIS) will be held in the lovely city of Palermo -known for its natural beauty and rich in precious monumental art-, which was elected this year Italian Capital of Culture and host of Manifesta 12 (https://www.palermocapitalecultura.it/). The Italian Statistical Society (SIS) was founded in 1939; it promotes every two years an international scientific meeting, in which both methodological and applied statistical research are considered. Today there are about one thousand members including scholars in statistical methodology, probability, social and economic statistics, biostatistics and demography. The 49th Meeting of the Italian Statistical Society will be hosted by the University of Palermo (UNIPA): established in 1806 by Ferdinand III of Bourbon, is to date one of the largest universities in Italy and indeed the largest in Sicily.
