This stunning Japanese animation tells the story of Arrietty, a miniscule young girl who lives under the floorboards of an old house with her equally tiny father and mother. However, their peaceful existence in interrupted when the curious 14 year old allows herself to be seen, by Sho, a 12 year old human boy. The two get to know each other, and an unlikely friendship soon blossoms, but the friendship is discovered by Haru, the housekeeper, who becomes aware of the borrowers’ existence. Becoming increasingly well known, they also live in fear of deportation to Lebanon as their residency status is still unresolved, although they have lived in Germany for 18 years. Lial and Hassan decide to use their talents to support the family but Maradona gets increasingly in trouble, putting himself even more at risk. This is a wonderful and hard-hitting documentary about a family’s struggle for the right to stay in Berlin, Germany. Key Study Areas German language, Social and Civic Studies, Music, Dance. Music teacher Ron Cooney has been working in the Republic of Ireland’s only high-rise housing estate for 15 years. During this time he has seen the area undergo a dramatic transformation, including the demolition of six of its seven tower blocks. The young people of Ballymun have an extraordinary story to tell, and Ron spends a year of his life curating a collection of music that gives voice to their story. A dynamic, funny, and driven man, despite his own health problems, what Ron and his students have achieved is simply amazing. Bookings 091 562200 or junior@galwayfilmfleadh.com 7 Town Hall Theatre 14.00 Thursday 17th November 2011 Waste Land 15A Brazil/UK 2010 Documentary 98 mins Director Lucy Walker Co directed by Joao Jardim and Karen Harley English and Portuguese language with English subtitles “WasteXxxxxx Land transcends the artist-documentary format with it’s concern for social and environmental issues” Filmed over nearly three years, WASTE LAND follows renowned artist Vik Muniz as he journeys from his home base in Brooklyn to his native Brazil and the world’s largest garbage dump, Jardim Gramacho, located on the outskirts of Rio de Janeiro. There he photographs an eclectic band of “catadores” – self-designated pickers of recyclable materials. Muniz’s initial objective was to “paint” the catadores with garbage. However, his collaboration with these inspiring characters as they recreate photographic images of themselves out of garbage reveals both the dignity and despair of the catadores as they begin to re-imagine their lives. Director Lucy Walker offers a stirring evidence of the transformative power of art and the alchemy of the human spirit. Moby scored soundtrack. At once brilliant, witty, intelligent and passionate Hamlet is also a man prone to fevered-obsessions, bouts of profound melancholy and maybe even madness.
