This stunning Japanese animation tells the story of Arrietty, a miniscule young girl who lives under the floorboards of an old house with her equally tiny father and mother. However, their peaceful existence in interrupted when the curious 14 year old allows herself to be seen, by Sho, a 12 year old human boy. The two get to know each other, and an unlikely friendship soon blossoms, but the friendship is discovered by Haru, the housekeeper, who becomes aware of the borrowers’ existence. Becoming increasingly well known, they also live in fear of deportation to Lebanon as their residency status is still unresolved, although they have lived in Germany for 18 years. Lial and Hassan decide to use their talents to support the family but Maradona gets increasingly in trouble, putting himself even more at risk. Music teacher Ron Cooney has been working in the Republic of Ireland’s only high-rise housing estate for 15 years. During this time he has seen the area undergo a dramatic transformation, including the demolition of six of its seven tower blocks. The young people of Ballymun have an extraordinary story to tell, and Ron spends a year of his life curating a collection of music that gives voice to their story. A dynamic, funny, and driven man, despite his own health problems, what Ron and his students have achieved is simply amazing. Bookings 091 562200 or junior@galwayfilmfleadh.com 7 Town Hall Theatre 14.00 Thursday 17th November 2011 Waste Land 15A Brazil/UK 2010 Documentary 98 mins Director Lucy Walker Co directed by Joao Jardim and Karen Harley English and Portuguese language with English subtitles “WasteXxxxxx Land transcends the artist-documentary format with it’s concern for social and environmental issues” Filmed over nearly three years, WASTE LAND follows renowned artist Vik Muniz as he journeys from his home base in Brooklyn to his native Brazil and the world’s largest garbage dump, Jardim Gramacho, located on the outskirts of Rio de Janeiro. There he photographs an eclectic band of “catadores” – self-designated pickers of recyclable materials. Muniz’s initial objective was to “paint” the catadores with garbage. However, his collaboration with these inspiring characters as they recreate photographic images of themselves out of garbage reveals both the dignity and despair of the catadores as they begin to re-imagine their lives. Director Lucy Walker offers a stirring evidence of the transformative power of art and the alchemy of the human spirit. Moby scored soundtrack.     Research on use of the Irish language on radio January 2018 Dr John Walsh, National University of Ireland, Galway Dr Rosemary Day, Mary Immaculate College, University of Limerick 1. Introduction The Irish language has had a role in broadcasting since the establishment of Ireland’s first radio station 2RN in 1926. The founders of the state imagined that radio would play a key role in the development of Irish identity in nation-building (Watson, 2003; Pine, 2002; Day, 2012). Following the consolidation of the existing Dublin and Cork stations in 1933, a national audience could hear programmes in Irish for the first time, due to the introduction of a high-powered transmitter in Athlone. Although a separate service was promised for the Gaeltacht in 1926, a distinct station did not materialise until 1972, with the establishment of Raidió na Gaeltachta (Day, 2012). Some Irish is broadcast on RTÉ’s other radio stations but as a full-time national broadcaster, RTÉ Raidió na Gaeltachta provides the majority of Irish language radio broadcasts in the country. Following the introduction of the Radio and Television Act of 1988, the pirate stations that had proliferated during the 1970s and 1980s were put off the air and new commercial broadcasters were licensed. Irish was granted only limited recognition in the schedules of these stations that came on air from 1989 onwards. As a result of a campaign by language activists in Dublin, Raidió na Life was established in 1993 as a community of interest service to serve Irish speakers in the capital (Ó Drisceoil, 2007).

    Annual Report 2018 Volunteer Galway Annual Report 2018 Chairperson’s Report Galway continues to see the benefits of volunteering in its many guises; from those who visit older adults in their homes to keep them company to people who organise our sports, arts, culture and participate in community clean ups. It is without doubt that these volunteers make Galway a far better place to live in. This is only a short list of the many areas where volunteers make an amazing and often unnoticed contribution to Galway. The recognition afforded to volunteers by both the City Council’s Mayor’s Awards and the County Council’s Cathaoirleach’s Awards are truly welcome initiatives that continue to highlight how important volunteering is to Galway. Volunteer Galway has continued to work hard to support both volunteers and voluntary organisations in a variety of ways including training and creating partnerships to promote and increase volunteering. We continue to work with GMIT to develop its volunteering supports and recognition. We are partnering with Galway 2020 in delivery of its exciting volunteer programme which will help to make the Capital of Culture 2020 an extraordinary year of activity in the City and County. Our work towards implementing the new Governance Code as set out by the Charities Regulator is well underway and we are on target to be in adherence a year ahead of time. I would urge all charities to ensure they are in compliance with the code. Volunteer Galway continues to partner with The Wheel to support many organisations with training and supports.

    An Open Letter to Galway City Council Let’s Change Our Streets and make walking and cycling safer for all ages and abilities during the COVID-19 pandemic Brendan McGrath Chief Executive of Galway City Council City Hall, Galway Wednesday, 6 May 2020 Dear Mr McGrath, We are a broad city-wide alliance of residents, employers and community groups, led by Galway Cycling Campaign / Feachtas Rothaíochta na Gaillimhe. We live, work, trade and shop in Galway City. We would like to begin a conversation with our Council to Change Our Streets to reallocate space to people on foot and on bikes during the COVID-19 pandemic. We are all working to re-open our society. Protecting public health for people of all ages and abilities is our shared concern, especially for vulnerable people, cocooners, and those with disabilities. The COVID-19 pandemic is the most significant public health threat many of us will experience. We would like to express sympathy with those who have died of COVID-19, their families, friends, and colleagues. To all who are ill, we wish them a full and speedy recovery. This global health emergency has required us to change our behaviour in many new ways. People’s environments need to enable them to change their behaviours to adhere to social distancing in the months ahead. Urban design is critical to this. Choices that the City Council makes can encourage these new behaviours we need to adapt in order to survive the COVID-19 pandemic. As advocates for people on bikes, we would like to offer our insights on road safety and urban design.
