Studio Ghibli’s new animated feature Arrietty is an adaptation of Mary Norton’s much-loved children’s classic The Borrowers.

This stunning Japanese animation tells the story of Arrietty, a miniscule young girl who lives under the ﬂoorboards of an old house with her equally tiny father and mother. However, their peaceful existence in interrupted when the curious 14 year old allows herself to be seen, by Sho, a 12 year old human boy. The two get to know each other, and an unlikely friendship soon blossoms, but the friendship is discovered by Haru, the housekeeper, who becomes aware of the borrowers’ existence. What will become of them now?

Lial, Hassan and Maradona Akkouch are talented street dancers and musicians who live in Berlin’s Neukölln district. Becoming increasingly well known, they also live in fear of deportation to Lebanon as their residency status is still unresolved, although they have lived in Germany for 18 years. Lial and Hassan decide to use their talents to support the family but Maradona gets increasingly in trouble, putting himself even more at risk. This is a wonderful and hard-hitting documentary about a family’s struggle for the right to stay in Berlin, Germany.

Music teacher Ron Cooney has been working in the Republic of Ireland’s only high-rise housing estate for 15 years. During this time he has seen the area undergo a dramatic transformation, including the demolition of six of its seven tower blocks. The young people of Ballymun have an extraordinary story to tell, and Ron spends a year of his life curating a collection of music that gives voice to their story. A dynamic, funny, and driven man, despite his own health problems, what Ron and his students have achieved is simply amazing.

Filmed over nearly three years, WASTE LAND follows renowned artist Vik Muniz as he journeys from his home base in Brooklyn to his native Brazil and the world’s largest garbage dump, Jardim Gramacho, located on the outskirts of Rio de Janeiro. There he photographs an eclectic band of “catadores” – self-designated pickers of recyclable materials. Muniz’s initial objective was to “paint” the catadores with garbage. However, his collaboration with these inspiring characters as they recreate photographic images of themselves out of garbage reveals both the dignity and despair of the catadores as they begin to re-imagine their lives. Director Lucy Walker offers a stirring evidence of the transformative power of art and the alchemy of the human spirit. Moby scored soundtrack.

Leaving Certificate 2012 Hamlet Workshop 15+ 90 mins Hamlet is one of the most complex and fascinating characters in literature. At once brilliant, witty, intelligent and passionate Hamlet is also a man prone to fevered-obsessions, bouts of profound melancholy and maybe even madness. This results in Hamlet fixating on the nature of revenge, agonizing over the morality of such an act and ultimately procrastinating, with tragic results, in his quest to avenge his father’s death. The central complexity of the character and indeed the play itself has resulted in many differing interpretations of the play, on both stage and screen. This workshop will present selected scenes from two film versions of the play, which will be used to illustrate the way the text engages with key themes. The workshop will be an engaging and interactive discussion of these themes and the importance they play in adapting the Bard’s greatest work.

Outreach Programme 12A Duration Film 90 mins followed by discussion As part of the Junior Galway Film Fleadh’s aim to extend the festival to the wider County Galway area we are delighted to offer secondary schools the chance of having a screening of the feature film THE CROCODILES STRIKE BACK (Die Coolste Band ist Zuruck) – the follow up to 2009’s well received THE CROCODILES - in their school. In this new action packed adventure the gang are called to save a local factory from closure. The film (German with English subtitles) is suitable for those studying German from ages 13-15 years old. LOUDER THAN A BOMB chronicles the stereotype-confounding stories of four teams as they prepare for and compete in the world’s largest youth poetry slam in Chicago. By turns hopeful and heartbreaking, the ﬁlm captures the lives of these unforgettable young people, exploring the ways writing shapes their world. This is not poetry as we know it from school but rather language as a joyful release, using words which simultaneously dance with the grace of the ballet and explode from the stage with the force of an A-bomb. Hothouse Short Film Panel in association with Fresh Film Festival 13.00 Saturday 19th November 2011. Town Hall Theatre. Age 14-18 yrs limited places. 45 mins Fresh Film Festival has worked with young Irish filmmakers for over 15 years. During the 2011 festival Fresh colaborated closely with a group of young experienced filmmakers forming the ‘Hothouse Group’ which has now received funding from the Arts Council to make a 10 minute short. The group is made up of 12 young filmmakers, all assigned specific roles who are currently working on this short. The Junior Galway Film Fleadh is proud to host a panel discussion featuring members from the Hothouse Group who will give an insight into their experiences as young Irish Filmmakers and offer tips and advice for budding young filmmakers. Age 13+ limited places The class will be constructed with the aim of helping the young actor obtain greater conﬁdence in their acting abilities. Beginning with a warm up and then various different games, students will be broken into groups and will each devise their own scene which they will perform for the rest of the class. These movies are adaptations: films that are based on a pre-existing source such as novels, plays and comic books.
