Arizona Head Coach John Mackovic

UA’s 26th head coach is in his 20th year as a collegiate head coach, athletics director or professional head coach, plus adds another dozen years in the game as a coordinator or assistant to give the Wildcats a mentor with more than three decades of established leadership. He has a solid track record of program improvement at each of his head coaching jobs. Mackovic is just five victories shy of the 100-victory level, and is the Pac-10’s leader in career victories. UA’s victory over UTEP gave Mackovic a 3-0 record in his season openers at Arizona, matching the most recent such streak, by Jim Young from 1973-75 when Mackovic was offensive coordinator at UA. Overall in his two-plus seasons he has compiled a 7-3 record in non-conference games. Arizona’s passing game re-emerged under his direction in his first two years, and this year he turned considerable attention to both the Cats running game and the Wildcat defense. The jury is out on Arizona’s young offense in 2003. Mackovic’s recruiting success in his initial years in Tucson has provided Arizona some outstanding young talent, many of whom may be heavily relied on this season. Among last season’s freshman class of 21, UA played 11. It’s clear Arizona’s future lies in the hands of its young talent. Mackovic’s first Arizona team unveiled a sophisticated offensive attack that produced a 2,000-yard passer, a 1,000-yard rusher and a near 1,000-yard receiver, while his second club developed a 3,000-yard passer and 1,300-yard receiver. The 2002 club established a number of high-water offensive marks and historical UA top 10 ratings. He developed an untested quarterback, Jason Johnson, into a leader who helped post five 400-yard passing games in Mackovic’s brief UA tenure, and the team has exceeded 400 yards in total offense 10 times in Mackovic’s two years. Off the field, the Wildcat mentor has established high standards for academic performance and citizenship, and backed them up with a fair but disciplined hand. Successive players have earned spots on the America Football Coaches Association Good Works Team – Eli Wnek and Johnson – and the latter won the Woody Hayes National Scholar Athlete Award in 2002. Both were Verizon Academic All-District VII honorees. Arizona recorded a program-high four first-team Academic All-Pac-10 selections in 2001 and backed that up with two more citations a year ago. Overall, 13 players were first or second-team selections or honorable mention Pac-10 All Academic in his two years. His focus on the total student-athlete has been underscored by nine national academic/citizenship honor winners during his collegiate career. As the District 9 representative on the Board of Trustees of the American Football Coaches Association, Mackovic, who will turn 60 in October, has a voice heard nationally in matters of keen interest to coaches concerned about the direction of and the comportment of its principals.

The Last Time vs. TCU – Sept. 5, 1999, Fort Worth Arizona dug itself a hole to trail 23-7 at the half, but stormed back for a 35-31 victory over Texas Christian in front of 34,612 drenched fans. The opening kickoff was delayed 29 minutes by lightning and rain, and the early going had UA players wondering if a nasty season-opening loss (41-7) at Penn State a week earlier was indicative of the road ahead. The Wildcats held a potent Horned Frogs’ offense at bay and scored 21 points using only six plays in less than four minutes of the third quarter. Senior wide receiver Dennis Northcutt – later named a consensus All- American – paced the Wildcats, tearing apart the TCU secondary for 257 yards on 10 catches. It was a good thing, too, because TCU shut down UA’s running attack and though Trung Canidate gained 56 yards on 14 carries, the Cats netted a total of 14 yards on the ground. Northcutt scored a career-high three touchdowns, including the game winner, and finished with 314 all-purpose yards. The latter still stands as the third-highest single-game total in UA history and gave him an average of 21 yards every time he touched the ball. Arizona scored the 21 points on three Ortege Jenkins’ touchdown passes. He hit Northcutt for a 38-yard score, tight end Brandon Manumaleuna on a 22-yard touchdown and Northcutt again for 59 yards on the first play of a Wildcat drive. Jenkins scored a two-point conversion to give the Cats a 28-25 lead. TCU battled back, however, taking a 31-28 lead on two field goals by Chris Kaylakie, the last with 13:18 remaining. After a TCU punt, Arizona took over possession with 3:41 left at its own 23 yard-line. The Wildcats inserted Keith Smith at quarterback after he spent most of the second half on the sideline with an ankle injury. Smith completed two passes to Northcutt for 28 and 16 yards before hitting Northcutt for the 30- yard game-winning strike. Arizona overcame a remarkable game by TCU tailback LaDainian Tomlinson, who carried 28 times for 170 yards, the most gained by any player against UA in 1999. The Cats also averted the embarrassment of having the 31-28 TCU edge stand up as the final score – since four of those points came on two safeties the Frogs’ defense pinned on UA. Halfback Scooter Sprotte was tackled in the end zone on the Cats’ first possession and Jenkins suffered a similar hit in the third quarter. Later, in November, UA stood at 6-3 and poised to make some noise in the bowl season. Alas, the Cats lost their final three contests. TCU went on to finished 8-4 and win the Mobile Alabama Bowl.

Ne Cede Malis Do not give in to misfortune – a wise frame of mind. The Cats need to heed it, as they continue to play teams that are hot. Bring on the No. 19- ranked Horned Frogs (No. 17 in the coaches poll) this week. Arizona’s 2003 schedule was known to be tough ahead of time, and the Cats need to keep gearing up for rugged football. The Wildcats will face 10 bowl teams in 2003. The Aug. 17 Associated Press preseason college football poll backed it up, as has early-season play. Louisiana State, Purdue and Texas Christian were ranked in preseason and Oregon and Purdue made the charts around the time of their games with UA. LSU (7) and Oregon (10) ride in the Top 10 this week. Other Pac-10 Conference affiliates USC, Washington and Arizona State also earned preseason Top 25 status in the AP poll, and Washington State checks in at No. 21 this week. Nothing will be easy for Arizona the rest of the way.

QB, or not QB… Arizona enters the TCU game week with some options under center – sophomore Nic Costa, redshirt freshman Ryan O’Hara or true freshman Kris Heavner. UA coach John Mackovic said he expected the QB situation to delineate itself by September’s end, but the selection process could last longer. Costa started the first three games with mixed results. In the opener he was effective passing (6-for-10, 119 yards, 0 INT, 1 TD) and running (3-33, 1 TD), plus led the team on four scoring drives in stewardship of six possessions. Against LSU he struggled, with three completions in 11 attempts, for 21 yards. Against Oregon he completed five passes (in nine attempts) for 33 yards. At Purdue he was the llub’s leading rusher, with 47 yards, but 1-for-4 throwing. OHara led the Cats on its other two scoring drives against UTEP including a nifty 79-yard touchdown throw to Lance Relford for O’Hara’s first career TD toss. Against the Tigers, O’Hara complete seven throws in 20 attempts (79 yards) and had one intercepted. He led UA on its lone offensive scoring drive. He led the team on its two scoring drives against Oregon, including a season-best 11-play drive helped by a UO roughing-the-passer call. At Purdue, he had his first start and played much of the first half, completing seven of 15 passes for 39 yards. Heavner, in the first action of his career, led the team on its lone scoring drive at Purdue, with modest 5-for-12 throwing and one interception. For the season, Costa has the best efficiency rating, thanks largely to no interceptions and one fumble lost. O’Hara has more than twice as many passing attempts as Costa, 78 to 34, but also four interceptions. Heavner’s a pup. All are quick afoot, but none yet has experienced composure in the pocket. Mackovic is known to be a one-QB coach and the final non-conference game may or may not bring him to a conclusive decision. QB of Record in Starts: Costa 1-2 ; O’Hara 0-1; Heavner 0-0.

Facta, Non Verba Deeds, not words. That’s what UA needs in its running attack. Coaches put considerable focus on improving UA’s 43-yards-per-game 2002 rushing attack. It sounded promising. Halfback Mike Bell and Clarence Farmer (the 2001 Pac-10 rushing titlist) were anticipated to bring the real goods. UA’s front line – prior to some injuries – was expected to be a cohesive group. But UA has been so far behind in games that patience with the running game hasn’t made sense – the 82-0 combined deficit at the end of the first half in the last three games doesn’t give a team time to pound it. With a young situation at quarterback the running game is going to have to come around to support a learning curve in the passing game. Farmer ran for an average of 7.6 yards on eight carries against LSU, and then added some tough runs for 42 against a stacked Ducks defense. Bell has started the first four games and leads the club with a 4.2 per carry average and 167 net yards, thanks to his opening 119-yard (13 carries) game against UTEP. Now this week the UA will face a TCU team with outstanding recent success in rushing defense.

Turnover Tales UA is among the national top 20 with 10 turnovers gained… and in the bottom group (94th) with 10 lost. The defensive effort is encouraging, compared to the 21 turnovers gained a year ago. But the offensive miscues are similar to last year’s 25 damaging interceptions or lost fumbles. Anything on the plus side is good after last year’s final -.58 figure. Interceptions thrown by quarterback Ryan O’Hara (4), Kris Heavner (1) and holder James Molina (1) have hurt the margin. UA suffered its worst day at Purdue, where four turnovers led to 23 Purdue points. UA scored its lone touchdown after a Tony Wingate interception. Gift-wrapped possessions like a lost fumble at the UA 21 yard-line and an interception at the UA 22 yard-line helped Purdue make a couple of thank-you drives for touchdowns. Oregon also recovered a UA fumble inside the red-zone for a near freebie drive. 2003 Turnovers: Arizona 10, Opponents 10 Turnover Points: Arizona 28, Opponents 40 Miscue Points: Arizona 28, Opponents 40 (includes turnover, blocked/botched kick possessions)

Farmer’s Climb UA senior halfback Clarence Farmer (39) and sophomore halfback Mike Bell (40) lead UA in rushing attempts. Farmer has put himself in position to move into the No. 6 spot on UA’s all-time rushing chart. He has 2,342 career yards, 48 shy of passing fullback Jim Upchurch (2,389 from 1972-74), a back who ran under former UA offensive coordinator John Mackovic on Jim Young’s proficient UA teams of the early 1970s. Were it not for an injury that kept him out of the final eight games of the 2002 season, Farmer had a chance to be the only Wildcat to lead the Cats in rushing for four consecutive years – assuming he can do so this year. Bell has the current lead, 167 yards to Farmer’s 138. Since 1958, four Wildcat backs have led the club in rushing in three years – Hubert Oliver (1978-80), David Adams (1984-86), Ontiwaun Carter (1992-94) and Trung Canidate (1997-99). All four of those backs are ahead of Farmer on the all-time career rushing chart.

Ealy’s Early UA sophomore receiver Biren Ealy has started quickly in his second year, with 19 receptions for 228 yards, and two scores. The pace puts him in position to break into UA’s single-season Top 10 receptions chart, where Richard Dice (56 in 1994) and Jeremy McDaniel and Dennis Northcutt (58 grabs in 1998 and 1997, respectively) sit at Nos. 8-10 on the list. All three of those players had more experience on the field at the quarterback spot than does Ealy. Dan White was a returning junior starter in 1994 and Keith Smith was a returning sophomore starter for McDaniel and Northcutt (who also had Ortege Jenkins under center in his 58-catch year.

Reggie’s Roles Offensive guard Reggie Sampay has quietly built up a total of 28 starts at three different positions in the middle of UA’s offensive front – five at center and two at left guard as a true freshman in 2000; six at left guard and two at center in 2001; one at center, four at right guard and four at left guard last year; and three at left guard and one at right guard this season. Junior center Keoki Fraser gives UA some more continuity, with 18 starts at center, broken as a streak by the season opener a year ago when he was banged up. That gives him consecutive starts.

Passing Fancy UA defensive backs had three interceptions throughout the 2002 season. In four games this year, safeties Lamon Means (UTEP), Darrell Brooks (LSU) and Tony Wingate (Purdue) have interceptions. But five quarterbacks have torched the Cats in the last three weeks. LSU quarterbacks Matt Mauck and Marcus Randall completed 71 percent of their throws for 11.96 yards per attempt, including a throw each (Mauck, 48 yards; Randall, 55 yards) for scoring bombs. The Ducks’ Kellen Clemens and Jason Fife combined for 69 percent completions for 283 yards and scoring tosses of 65 yards (Clemens) and 30 yards (Fife). Purdue’s Kyle Orton completed 16 of 28 throws for 261 yards and three scores, including TD darts of 35, 81 and 43 yards. Ouch. The 81-yard play came with under a minute remaining in the first half and changed the complexion of a 17-0 game. Underlying those numbers for LSU, Oregon and Purdue was their team’s success running the ball – 182, 210 and 292 yards rushing, respectively. The Ducks ran on first down 29 times and had some success at it. LSU ran on first down 32 times. Purdue ran on first down 31 times. The Cats are rated 97th in pass defense (yardage allowed) and 94th in Division I-A rushing defense.

QBs Follow a Tough Act The Cats are using new quarterbacks in 2003, as noted. The last new guy – Jason Johnson – made a name for himself and thrived under the Mackovic system in single-season figures, both of which placed highly on UA historical charts (records in bold). He was a fourth-year junior when he began working with Mackovic, while this year’s group of three guys has a combined six years in the program. The Scoring Zone …Seems like the twilight zone for Arizona – it hasn’t been there enough times. UA opened the year with four touchdown in four pentetrations inside UTEP’s 20 yard-line; since then: 1 trip, 1 touchdown. That’s a fine TD rate, but pales with the 17 opponents’ possessions inside the red zone in the last three losses – and 16 scores. Arizona is meeting goal but not getting to the goal-line enough. Last year UA made touchdowns only 44 percent of the time in the scoring zone. Oregon was 6-for-6 (4 TDS) and Purdue was 5-for-5 (4 TDs). Ealy. That’s the strike zone, not the red zone. Arizona: 5 Scoring Zone Possessions – 5 scores (5 TD) = 100% scoring; 100% TD Opponents: 17 Scoring Zone Possessions – 16 scores (13 TD + 3 FG) = 94% scoring [Failed: 1 fumble]; 76% TD 1st-and-Goal: Arizona – 2 times, 2 TD. Opponents – 10 times,10 TD.

Third-and-Long UA has suffered a 7-for-43 third-down conversion rate in the last two games, including a 1-for-13 evening on third down against LSU – when it didn’t convert until the third quarter. Coaches want 42 percent effectiveness on conversion plays and Arizona sits at 25% entering the TCU game. Against UTEP the team had a good night, with eight successful plays in 16 tries. Against Oregon, because of penalties the first two third downs UA faced were 3rd-and-24 and 3rd-and-8. The next three: 3rd-and-9, 3rd-and-11 and 3rd-and-15. You might say the defense had an idea what was coming. As for opponents on third down, UTEP was modestly successful with 7 conversions in 18 attempts, while LSU was 7-for-12 and Oregon 8-for-17. Purdue was 7-for-16. Defensive objectives are around 33%. Arizona on third down: 15-59, 25% Opponents on third down: 29-63, 46% Arizona faced 3rd-and-long (5 or more yards): 49 plays; 28 of at least 3rd-and-8 Opponent faced 3rd-and-long: 39 plays; 9 of at least 3rd-and-8

Stepping out with Syndric True freshman receiver Syndric Steptoe has put himself on the field this year, thanks to some speed and verve as a kick returner. He has returned 14 kickoffs for a 19.1-yard average, including a long return of 41 yards against Oregon. Coaches feel he’s going to break one, but he’s been quite consistent in helping UA take the ball out beyond the 20 yard-line. For a team that has lined up for a number of kickoffs (thanks to opponents’ scoring), it’s an important job. Steptoe also has returned two punts for 10 yards – one for 12 yards and one for –2. He’s learning. He was a high school (Bryan, Texas, HS) sprinter and long jumper, and played quarterback, receiver and running back as a prep.

QB Sacks Arizona trails opponents in quarterback sacks, 8-7, after four games. UA did not get to the QB against Oregon or Purdue, while those teams had three apiece. The difficulty in pressuring the passer has afforded the last three opponents time to complete 60 passes in 88 attempts, a 68 percent rate that will normally beat you, and has. One reason the UA switched to a 3-4 defense this past spring was to bolster its pass rush. In the opener, it helped the club get four sacks, with a limited amount of blitzing. Against LSU, the club corralled the quarterback three times. The Cats were No. 7 nationally among I-A teams with 74 quarterback sacks from 2000-2001, but last year slipped to 26 sacks, ninth in the league. On the other side of the ball, the 2002 team was last in the league in allowing 52 sacks by opponents, well above the single-game offensive goal of 1 sack per 20 attempts. Against the Miners in the season opener, UA’s offensive line did not allow a sack. Against LSU the line did a good job of holding the Tigers to two sacks. Oregon and Purdue had the three each. Offensive coordinator Mike Deal, Mackovic and the entire offensive staff took a part in developing better pass protection by players on each offensive unit.

Punting Pair Sophomore Danny Baugher and senior James Molina each have punted since about mid way through the 2002 season, possibly an indication that the job isn’t exactly settled. Baugher started all four games this year and had a good personal outing with a 43.4 average on eight kicks at Purdue – the best single-game average he has enjoyed when he had more than one punt in a game. Molina has finished each game and has the best season figure at 40.8 (to Baugher’s 40.7). Arizona has punted 30 times in the past three weeks – 10 vs. LSU, nine vs. Oregon and 11 at Purdue. Arizona’s net punting average is improving (34.1), but coverage can still improve. UA has allowed a combined 205 yards on 17 punt returns in the past three weeks, skewed largely when LSU’s Skyler Green took one back 62 yards for a score. UA’s net in the LSU game was 28.0 and in the Oregon game it was 34.3. Against Purdue it was 37.7. Arizona has caused fumbles on punt returns by UTEP and Oregon and might need some more action from special teams to help the club get a spark.

New Coaches, New Emphases Head coach John Mackovic hired five new assistants in the off-season, with one leaving after spring ball – making it six. It’s been one of the good developments in the Arizona program. He secured two seasoned coordinators in Mike Deal on offense and Mike Hankwitz on defense, lured a coordinator to become inside linebackers coach in Craig Bray, attracted a young coordinator to become quarterbacks coach in Jeff Hecklinski, and signed on Mose Rison out of the NFL ranks to coach wide receivers. Rison joined the staff in early summer. Jay Boulware, running backs coach, coordinates special teams. Returnees are tight ends coach Charlie Dickey (switch from OL), defensive line coach Marty Long, secondary coach Steve Bernstein and Boulware. New graduate assistants Dan Loyd (offense), a former Wildcat, and Jasper Strong (defense) round out the staff. On paper and on the field it’s a vibrant group with know-how, experience and a push-‘em-hard demeanor. Hankwitz directs a 3-4 defensive scheme. The Cats had used the double-eagle flex since the early 1990s.

Notes… …True freshman quarterback Kris Heavner’s appearance at Purdue was the first time an incoming freshman had played for Arizona since Ronald Veal played against New Mexico in 1987. Veal entered the game in the second quarter and helped lead UA to a 20-9 victory with 60 yards rushing on nine carries and 4-for-10 passing for 96 yards. He subsequently started seven games that year and 32 starts throughout his four-year career… …Since the start of the 2000 season, Arizona is 1-14 against ranked teams. Its lone victory came against No. 18 USC in Los Angeles in 2000… …The Purdue scoring margin of 52 points was the eighth biggest lop-sided beating UA has endured. The all-time deficit was a 75-0 loss to Michigan State in 1949. USC beat US by 63 points in 1923 (69-6). Minnesota whipped UA 62-0 in 1939. The Trojans had a 56-0 victory in 1925. Washington won in Seattle, 54-0, in 1991 and Michigan State won by the same margin in East Lansing (61-7) in 1948. Colorado won by 53, 65-12, in 1958. Arizona has given up 173 points this year, and average of 43.2, well ahead of (behind?) the school’s toughest year in scoring defense, the 34.3 points per game allowed in 2001… …The Cats have started three different cornerbacks in four games at the spot opposite Michael Jolivette. Gary Love missed the Oregon game but returned for the start at Purdue. Luis Nunez (LSU) and Zeonte Sherman (Oregon) filled in while Love’s ankle healed. All four play… …Arizona had its three season high-water drive marks on two scoring drives against Oregon, with an 11-play drive (most plays) for a field goal in the third quarter and a 10-play, 97-yard (most yards) drive using 4:14 (most time used) for a touchdown in the fourth period… …Arizona did not throw an interception against Oregon, its only pick-free game of the year. Three-game starter Nic Costa has not been intercepted this year, Ryan O’Hara has thrown four, true freshman Kris Heavner has tossed one and holder James Molina tossed one (actually effective in terms of field position) on a bad-snap field goal attempt… …More trouble on the injury front for UA’s lines arose against Oregon. Right tackle Brandon Phillips hurt his right knee and will miss the rest of the season. So far this year injuries or departures for other reasons have permanently cut four line starters and two other top reserves from the picture – OG John Parada, Phillips, NT Vince Fuela, DE Brad Brittain, DT David Sharp and DE Fata Avegalio – although the latter remains on scholarship serving as a student volunteer assistant… …A number of Wildcats earned their first career starts in the league opener against Oregon. Sophomore outside linebacker Marcus Smith, junior cornerback Zeonte Sherman, redshirt freshman Matt Padron and inside linebacker John McKinney earned spurs. Smith was considered a potential starter prior to the 2002 season but was slowed by an injury. Sherman filled in for injured Gary Love, while Padron earned the nod because of Steve Fleming’s kidney bruise… …LSU’s Skyler Green returned a punt 62 yards for a touchdown to wreck UA’s net punting effort (28.0) and give an opponent such a scoring play for the first time in 12 seasons. Eric Guliford of ASU did the deed (68 yards) in 1991… …Arizona’s 217-yards rushing in the opener was its most since it ran for 258 yards in a humbling 63-28 loss to Oregon on Oct. 6, 2001. Clarence Farmer had 158 yards on 15 carries in that game… The Cats rushed for a combined 191 yards in the three games since… …Arizona’s 3-0 mark in season openers under John Mackovic matched the 3-0 mark Jim Young posted from 1973-75. The best in UA history was Tex Oliver’s 5-0 record in season openers, from 1933-37… Dick Tomey (5-0 from 1992-96) and Miles Casteel (5-0) in 1942 and 1945-48) also had five-game streaks but not in their first five years… …Arizona’s five 400-yard passing games in the past two years under John Mackovic is the Pac-10’s highest total, and the Cats’ six 400-yard passing games since 1996 rated No. 9 nationally entering the year… It might take some time before young QBs Nic Costa and Ryan O’Hara help UA post another… …Graphic Impact Players of the Game awards following victories are given by the coaching staff and presented in the post- practice huddle Tuesdays, . Honors for the UTEP game went to halfback Mike Bell on offense, co-defensive winners in linebackers Joe Siofele and Matt Molina, and wide receiver Gary Love on special teams. …Some losses in the off-season reduced Arizona’s overall depth to about 70 scholarship players. Sophomore linebacker Landon Kafentzis left the team during camp and was reportedly planning to transfer… Senior wide receiver Andrae Thurman, who was second to Bobby Wade (93-1389, 8 TD) last year with 61 catches for 915 yards, is not eligible for the 2003 season… Ditto for mid-year junior college transfer David Sharp…Junior nose tackle Vince Feula, the probable starter, also did not rejoin the team in fall camp…Sophomore defensive tackle Brad Brittain, a projected starter, left the team for undisclosed reasons shortly before camp… Junior Justin Jochum decided to take a proffered academic scholarship in the off-season and concentrate on his engineering studies…Coaches switched true freshman Ryan Kilpatrick to tight end, a move aimed for the future and some emphasis on his H-back potential… Offensive lineman Ismael Garcia, another true freshman, moved to the defensive line where he’ll work at nose tackle, receiving some personal on-hands help from former defensive end Fata Avegalio. Avegalio, a potential line starter as a junior this year, could not continue his career because of a medical problem, but was kept on scholarship and will assist coaches as a volunteer student assistant…

GAME 4 Arizona 7 (25) Purdue 59 Sept. 20, 2003 Ross-Ade Stadium (52,310) West Lafayette, Ind. Purdue eschewed its gold uniforms of recent years and came out in its traditional black, then put a black- and-blue thumping on Arizona in a 59-7 victory in West Lafayette, Ind. Kyle Orton threw three touchdown passes, Jerome Brooks and Jerod Void reach ran for a pair and a rugged defense allowed the Wildcats only 174 yards in total offense. Four Arizona turnovers led to 24 Purdue points. UA brought another candidate into its quarterback mix, as true freshman Kris Heavner saw second-half duty and led the Wildcats on their only scoring drive of the afternoon. The Wildcats stayed tough for the first quarter, trailing only 7-0 after the opening stanza, but gave up 17 points in the second to trail by a wide margin at the break for the third straight game. The Boilermakers found the going relatively easy on the ground – 292 yards —and through the air – 288 yards – to pile up 580 yards in total offense. Heavner completed five passes in 12 attempts for 55 yards and helped lead the Cats on a scoring drive of five plays and 47 yards converting a third-quarter turnover into the Cats’ lone score. He completed a 36-yard pass to Biren Ealy for the touchdown.
