Postseason Recaps, Line Scores, Stats & Records World Champions 1955 World Champions For the Brooklyn Dodgers, the 1955 World Series was not just a chance to win a championship, but an opportunity to avenge five previous World Series failures at the hands of their chief rivals, the New York Yankees. Even with their ace Don Newcombe on the mound, the Dodgers seemed to be doomed from the start, as three Yankee home runs set back Newcombe and the rest of the team in their opening 6-5 loss. Game 2 had the same result, as New York's southpaw Tommy Byrne held Brooklyn to five hits in a 4-2 victory. With the Series heading back to Brooklyn, Johnny Podres was given the start for Game 3. The Dodger lefty stymied the Yankees' offense over the first seven innings by allowing one run on four hits en route to an 8-3 victory. Podres gave the Dodger faithful a hint as to what lay ahead in the series with his complete-game, six-strikeout performance. Game 4 at Ebbets Field turned out to be an all-out slugfest. After falling behind early, 3-1, the Dodgers used the long ball to knot up the series. Future Hall of Famers Roy Campanella and Duke Snider each homered and Gil Hodges collected three of the club’s 14 hits, including a home run in the 8-5 triumph. Snider's third and fourth home runs of the Series provided the support needed for rookie Roger Craig and the Dodgers took Game 5 by a score of 5-3.

  • Exploiting Pitcher Decision-Making Using Reinforcement Learning” (DOI: 10.1214/13-AOAS712SUPP; .Pdf)
The Annals of Applied Statistics 2014, Vol. 8, No. 2, 926–955 DOI: 10.1214/13-AOAS712 c Institute of Mathematical Statistics, 2014 MONEYBaRL: EXPLOITING PITCHER DECISION-MAKING USING REINFORCEMENT LEARNING By Gagan Sidhu∗,† and Brian Caffo‡ General Analytics∗1, University of Alberta† and Johns Hopkins University‡ This manuscript uses machine learning techniques to exploit base- ball pitchers’ decision making, so-called “Baseball IQ,” by modeling the at-bat information, pitch selection and counts, as a Markov De- cision Process (MDP). Each state of the MDP models the pitcher’s current pitch selection in a Markovian fashion, conditional on the information immediately prior to making the current pitch. This in- cludes the count prior to the previous pitch, his ensuing pitch selec- tion, the batter’s ensuing action and the result of the pitch. The necessary Markovian probabilities can be estimated by the rel- evant observed conditional proportions in MLB pitch-by-pitch game data. These probabilities could be pitcher-specific, using only the data from one pitcher, or general, using the data from a collection of pitchers. Optimal batting strategies against these estimated conditional dis- tributions of pitch selection can be ascertained by Value Iteration. Optimal batting strategies against a pitcher-specific conditional dis- tribution can be contrasted to those calculated from the general con- ditional distributions associated with a collection of pitchers. In this manuscript, a single season of MLB data is used to cal- culate the conditional distributions to find optimal pitcher-specific and general (against a collection of pitchers) batting strategies. These strategies are subsequently evaluated by conditional distributions cal- culated from a different season for the same pitchers.

By Dylan Hernandez October 3, 2009 Hiroki Kuroda maintained his sense of humor when talking about what could be his greatest setback of an injury-riddled season: a slightly bulging disk in his neck that will sideline him for at least the opening round of Workplace voluntary benefits boost the playoffs. company image, bottom line and employee morale Asked whether he considered this to be unluckiest season of his professional career, Kuroda replied, "So far. But my career's not over yet." Kuroda spent most of the first two months Millions in tuition aid to return to college this season on the disabled list because of a strained side muscle. He returned to the DL in August after a line drive struck him on the head. With Kuroda unavailable, Manager Joe Torre will face simpler decisions when assembling his postseason roster -- but simpler, in this case, probably isn't better. Randy Wolf and Clayton Kershaw figure to start the first two games of the National League division series, with Chad Billingsley, Vicente Padilla and Jon Garland candidates to start the next two. Padilla will start the regular-season finale Sunday. Garland, who gave up five runs in 3 1/3 innings in a loss to San Diego on Wednesday, is scheduled to pitch in relief that day.
